Meds for Autism Not Well Understood: Study

THURSDAY, Feb. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Children with autism may benefit from medications to treat children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other related disorders, but clearer guidelines are needed, a new study shows.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 1,000 U.S. teens enrolled in special education programs, to assess the use of psychiatric medications in those with autism, ADHD and both conditions.

Patients with both autism and ADHD had the highest rates of medicine use (about 58 percent), followed by those with ADHD only (around 49 percent) and those with autism only (about 34 percent), according to study author Paul Shattuck, an assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis, and colleagues.

Black teenagers with autism only or with autism and ADHD were less likely to receive medications than whites.

"Observations from the present study reinforce the complexity of pharmacologic treatment of challenging behavior in kids with [autism spectrum disorders] and ADHD," Shattuck said in a university news release. "There needs to be a clearer guide for treating kids with both an [autism spectrum disorder] and ADHD."

He noted that drug treatment for autism reflects a trial-and-error approach based on associated symptoms, and there is a poor understanding of overall medication use for children with autism.

"Also striking are the high rates of antipsychotic, antidepressant/anti-anxiety and stimulant medication use in these youths," Shattuck said. "Additional studies examining the treatment of core and associated [autism spectrum disorder] symptoms are needed to guide the treatment of these kids."

It is estimated that one in 110 people have autism, with the majority being boys. Signs of autism include problems with communication and social interactions.

The study appears in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.

I have Aspergers Syndrome~ there are NO MEDS for this, only pills to compensate for the anxiety I deal with. Anxiety is a big deal....I don't like drugs...and I run a half-million dollar budget. People can be intrusive and I am OCD on some things.....that is life in a nutshell....The Aspergers doesnt go away.....I have moments where I "get it " and some where I dont.

My daughter has autism, I'd rather take the chance on meds that are not approved for autism, than to have none. Without meds, she literally can't function. She couldn't stand the sensory effect of lights, could barely eat, her OCD was so bad that she couldn't leave the room without performing 45 minute rituals. She mostly sat in a dark room with a blanket over her head and cried. I did some crying myself. Now, on meds. She is happy, can go to school, play, and enjoy a whole other quality of life. Now, she was diagnosed severe, she is moderate now with functional speech, but every situation is unique. We also do special diet, and therapies.it is scary to try meds, but when you've ran out of resources, you have to make really tough decisions.

Have you tried high vitamin B products like Behavior Balance? they work for my son.
      • Life Created God 3 mths ago
The med you are talking about do not do anything for autism..she is still autistic. The meds help her OCD..She is lucky some autistic cannot take meds because of sensitivity to the meds.
There is no medication to treat autism...only the anxiety and other things caused by autism.
I am glad your daughter is doing better.

For many children, OT works wonders for alot of the things you mention too. Light sensitivity, sounds , foods etc. My son would be in the same boast as your daughter without OT.

These meds are in good company; most psych meds are poorly understood and the benefits are not biologically quantifiable. Bizarre.
      • Reader 3 mths ago
Most meds, in general, are not totally understood. Taking anything other than the old tried and true can, and many times does, lead to worse troubles than the disease needing treatment.

We've never figured out how acetominophren works yet we give that every day to children. There is much more that we don't know than do know. The human brain is the real final frontier.

omg really? ya think? If you can't understand the disease, you can't possibly understand the drugs that are being tossed out willy nilly!

So they want to treat something that they don't have a clue about even though they have been saying that it was genetic for over twenty years now.How are we to trust these so called experts when they seemingly don't have a clue.

Seriously - PEOPLE -as soon as you can explain neuroplasticity where the limibic system is and how it works, the common co comorbidities of the different "disorders/disease" of that part of the brain and how genes/environment/cognition/neurotransmitters/neurohormones interact (which they are just begining to look at 60 of the 1000s we know exist) - then you can have a MARGINALLY educated opinion on this - there is NO ONE MAGIC BULLET EXPLANATION!
Autism - as with all metal disorders/disease (this is even up for grabs - could be variation among the population) - varies from individual to individual. Some will have some symptoms (varying in severity and number) while other will have milder/fewer symptoms - Just as people with small squamous oat cell cancer have it in different parts of lung, leading to fewer/more symptoms and faster/ longer time of death. Just as the majority schizophrenics do not hear voices and are not violent - just because your kid does XYZ - does not mean their kid does XYZ - they may just do X and Z and the meds help with that.
NOT ALL Autistic people are uncommunicative, pull their hair and need to be institutionalized and NOT ALL autistic people are Bill Gates - the population falls in a spectrum. And Asperger's should STAY part of the spectrum!

Agreed, but no need to shout.

If a medication isn't understood, why would you give it to children? The side-effects may be worse than the disease.

It is all about making money for the pharmacutical companies.
      • sayitisntover 3 mths ago
it is about making money but it is also about parents trying to cope with a high-maintainance child in a very imperfect world.
      • Emily 3 mths ago
Parents are desperate for help. But yeah, I won't give them to my kids.People are going to have to understand that my son talks in loops sometimes. It's compulsive behavior but better than all the side effects, and he's a happy healthy kid. My other son does need help with his anxiety but we work on that in non-drug ways. It takes more time and patience to find the right strategies. Popping a pill just sounds easier to some people.

Another thing that may be a misconception that many more boys have autism than girls. Boys are dx'd more often because girls may present symptoms differently than boys.
Boys are more likely to be dx'd than girls. Autistic girls may get no dx or are dx with Bipolar or something else.
      • starlight 3 mths ago
That's not always the case either LCG. Girls who are Autistic do present different symptoms than boys, yes, but that doesn't mean they don't get diagnosed correctly. And Autism has nothing to do with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder and a mental illness, whereas Autism is a developmental disability that people are born with. People with bipolar disorder can and usually do recover with treatment and therapy; however, there are only limited threrapies for those with Autism, and Autism's effects are permanent.
      • Life Created God 3 mths ago
I was not comparing bipolar to autism..I am autistic my nephew is autistic my grandson is autistic. I know exactly what it is. What I meant is girls ARE misdx making seem as though many more boy ARE autistic than girls.
I apologize if I worded incorrectly. Or maybe you are just used to people who know nothing about autism.
      • adarc 3 mths ago
I agree, there are many girls who are diagnosed very late, especially girls with Aspergers.

According to specialists like Dr. Bruce Cohen, a mitochondrial expert at the Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Mario Capecchi, a Nobel Prize winning geneticist, mental illnesses like autism have been linked to an underlying immune and mitochondrial dysfunction so wouldn'tt it make more sense for doctors to treat the immune system than to push SSRI drugs that noone has a clue as to what the effect will be?

I have 2 children with fragile x syndrome...which is on the worst end of the autistic scale...there are no meds to cure my children.. ...and most doctors refuse to even treat them. I will NEVER allow my children to be used as human guinea pigs for medications ....I am actually very ANTI drugs...all it does most times is mask the illness, and dope the kids to high heaven....which is more for parental convenience than a help to the actual child.

Every person I have known personally had worse side effects with these drugs than the problem they were attempting to treat. I have two children with autism and have never used drugs on them, and probably never will. I personally had serious adverse effects from psychological drugs and don't trust them being used on my children.

We opposed untested adult psychiatric medications for our son's Asperger's and ADHD. He does take a 12 hour generic concerta, but ritalin category medications have a proven track record with kids who have ADHD. There is nothing for autism spectrum disorders. If our son only had Aspergers and did not have severe hyperactivity he would not even be on concerta.

I learned I had ADHD as an adult and I see many behaviors that used to get me in trouble in my son, but he's growing out of many just like I did. Stimulants don't work alone and therapy and good parenting skills do not always work alone. Some kids need medication, but why use antipsychotics or antidepressants when there is no evidence that they work outside of the specific conditions they were developed for?

Medication cannot fix my son with Asperger's, he is who he is, and he deals with the hand he was dealt.
    • sayitisntover  •  3 mths ago
Yes...we need more studies...to show us how smaller classrooms and more emphasis on helping out the teachers..oh, wait, that does not make pharmaceutical companies rich. Before anyone gets the wrong idea...I am autistic and we have 4 other family members with it. i have had life-threatening reactions to abilfy and lamictal. My family states I am better off all meds...the meds only made things worse, that's not to judge other's choices. But, to me, pharmaceuticals should come low on the list.

America: The truth about autism was released in medical records by Johns Hopkins Hospital. The child's brain in deprived of oxygen by a member of the medical staff. Yes, this statement is 100% truth. Physician orders are given to discontinue respiration. In other words, these SADISTS commit attempted murder and called this criminal act autism. Note to all women: DO NOT consume ANY pharmaceutical products before, during, or after your pregnancy. DO NOT leave your child alone for ANY reason, procedure, or excuse with any medical staff member. While the children are without your direct supervision, the medical SADISTS will inject or deprive your child's brain of oxygen. The entire truth will soon be revealed for all to see. ...... END MEDICAL ABUSE AND FOSTER CARE CORRUPTION NOW.

Also, I'll say that infantile autism and asbergers are so completely different.

Psychiatrists are the worst garbage. They lie, expect your kid to take meds, and think that any change in behavior is sickness. If they had to take meds, then they would be worried about the side effects. But otherwise, they are fine quite literally shoving their agenda down our throats.
    • Emily  •  Highlands, North Carolina  •  3 mths ago
We already knew we don't have a clear understanding of meds for autism. I'm so glad they did a study to confirm this.

Up next: A study confirms that we don't know why money is spent on these studies. A follow up study will be done to see if monkey have any idea.
    • What me worry?  •  3 mths ago
My son did terribly on meds during the brief time he was on them. When I researched and found that many of our kids have chronic neuroinflammation, in the GI and brain, I put my son on Lutimax (Luteolin) a natural anti-inflammatory and on probiotics. When it comes to autism, natural treatment is the way to go b/c there are no bad side effects or the side effects are minimal. Much safer IMO for addressing underlying problems. associte wih autim
