Megaupload Data Safe for Another Two Weeks

The data on Megaupload will not be erased for at least two more weeks, Cnet reports citing Megaupload lawyer Ira Rothken.

The data on the file hosting service, whose founders have been accused of piracy and money laundering, was in danger to be erased as soon as Thursday, Feb. 2, as the site's assets were frozen and it was unable to pay its hosting fees.

"The hosting companies have been gracious enough to provide additional time so we can work out some kind of arrangement with the government," said Rothken.

The authorities have made backups of some of the data, which is to be used as evidence, but not all of it. The deletion of all the data on Megaupload would harm users which used the service for perfectly legal purposes.

One of the hosting companies which stores some of the Megaupload data, Carpathia hosting, told us they simple cannot return users their data. "Carpathia Hosting does not have, and has never had, access to the content on MegaUpload servers and has no mechanism for returning any content residing on such servers to MegaUpload’s customers.(...) We would recommend that anyone who believes that they have content on MegaUpload servers contact MegaUpload. Please do not contact Carpathia Hosting," said Carpathia in a statement.

Hopefully, the authorities and Megaupload will find a solution to give the users a way to retrieve their data before it's erased.

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom (a.k.a. Kim Schmitz) and six others who ran the site were indicted by The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in January. They are accused of making $175 and causing $500 million in copyright infringement; if they're found guilty, they're looking at a maximum 20 years prison sentence.

Lets see..the government shuts down a site that not even on their own soil because its taking money from the rich Hollywood elite that make millions already and artists that charge hundreds to see them perform and usu the profits for drugs and partying.BUT the same government does NOTHING when China ships product to this country that are killing our pets, and hurting our children. They do nothing when CHINA reverse engineers products that are made here and them resells them at a lower price costing us hundreds of jobs. They threaten GM for the blueprints to the Chevy volt all while sending us electrical products that are unsafe and causing fires..hopefully not in a house built with Chinese drywall that is not fire or mold resistant.See a pattern here..I do..and you should !

The masters of the New World Order are moving ahead with the plans to make the masses their slaves through credit and make sure they never escape bondage.

The way the government catered to the banks after their treasonous criminal action, the government needs to put Megaupload in temporary receivership to allow those who legally used the service to retrieve their data. Only block the illegal stuff. But since it only would serve the citizens, I wouldn't expect much from the government cronies.

Amazing, their properties, assets and business seized and destroyed, WITHOUT EVEN A TRIAL! The government makes usre that their victim has no means of protecting themselves! They weren't part of the monied elite, nor did they contribute to the global Don, and so where shut down mercilessly. Even if found INNOCENT, they are crushed and destroyed, which is out and out WRONG!

I am really perplexed at the idea that any legitimate digital data was on those servers. By cost alone they were much more expensive than other similar "services" and for less than their smallest charge you can get your own hosting where you are in full control. No legitimate company used megaupload other than to get pirate software/movies/music. Let's be real?

A two week reprieve isn't gonna make much difference if Megaupload is down. The Feds will be of no help; they would just as soon keep the data, as much of it is copyright infringing (or more insidious, like child porn, etc.) The legitimate users (and there were many) are SOL. Don't use a cyberlocker or other internet based service to back up your files. Get yourself an external drive. One terabyte = $79 these days.

with the federal gov saving only the data that they are interested in while allowing the rest of the data to be erased show they are not interested in the truth since the data that is being lost might actually proove thier innocense.
