Memorial Day Fireworks Sales, Displays in Metro Detroit

Memorial Day is right around the corner, and several Metro Detroit fireworks establishments hope to make it an even more memorable Memorial Day for 2012. Thanks to a law passed last December, Michigan residents can purchase more powerful explosives for their holiday celebrations, says WWJ. No more will Michigan residents have to go across the border to get the contraband fireworks. No longer are Michiganders limited to smaller, ground-based fireworks. Now, residents over 18 can buy Roman candles, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and other bigger airborne fireworks right in Michigan. Here's a list of fireworks dealers in Detroit that handle the larger fireworks.

    - Big Fireworks (operated under the Black Diamond LLC - Vandyke Road between 16 1/2 Mile Road and 17 Mile in Sterling Heights, Mich.): This vendor is one of the first to offer the bigger pyrotechnics, says Click on Detroit. The store opened on May 14. Several more Big Fireworks stores are set open in Michigan, says MLive. Along with Sterling Heights and a Lansing outlet, venues in Grayling and Waterford are opening. West Michigan has two Big Fireworks stores, one at 4255 Alpine Ave. NW in front of the Art Van Furniture. A second larger store opened recently in Kentwood at 2751 28th St. SE near the Woodland Mall.

    - Southgate Fireworks (12649 Dix-Toledo Road, Southgate, Mich.): Along with bottle rockets and firecrackers, Southgate Fireworks has mortars, missiles, cakes, fire showers, and other larger explosives. The store is hosting a grand reopening sale on two upcoming Saturdays: May 19 and May 26, just in time for Memorial Day. Hours are noon to 6 p.m., and there will be early-bird specials. Note sales are in-store only. This page explains the amended Michigan Fireworks Safety Act of 2011, including regulations for appropriate fireworks use.

    - Victory Fireworks (10670 Victory Road, Erie, Mich.): This one's a bit of a hike from Detroit but worth it for the super firepower enthusiast. It's located off from I-75 at Exit 6 Luna Pier Road. Coming from Detroit or northern metro regions. take I-75 south. Victory Fireworks is located on the west side of the highway. The store is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    - There will be several public fireworks displays in Michigan centered around Memorial Day. On May 18 at dusk, there will be a fireworks display at Comerica Park downtown Detroit. The fireworks follow the Friday evening Detroit Tigers baseball games.

    - Sumpter County Festival (Sumpter County Fairgrounds, Sumpter and Willis, Belleville, Mich.): There will be a public fireworks display on Sunday, May 27, at dusk. Rain date is Monday, Memorial Day, May 28.
