Memorial exposes anger over Paterno's treatment

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The near-capacity crowd of 12,000 seemed to be just waiting for somebody to bring up the subject. Finally, when someone rose in Joe Paterno's defense to argue that he had been made a scapegoat, the audience was instantly on its feet, applauding thunderously.

Anger and resentment came spilling out at a campus memorial service Thursday for the football coach, two months after he was summarily fired by the trustees.

It was Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight who broke the dam, defending Paterno's handling of child-sex allegations that were leveled against a former coaching assistant.

"If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno's response," Knight said. Paterno's widow, Sue, was among those rising to their feet.

Later, Paterno's son Jay received a standing ovation when he declared: "Joe Paterno left this world with a clear conscience."

Capping three days of mourning on campus, the 2½-hour ceremony was filled with lavish praise that probably would have embarrassed Paterno, who died Sunday of lung cancer at 85 after racking up more wins — 409 — than any other major-college football coach and leading his team to two national championships in 46 seasons.

One by one, Penn State football stars and others credited Paterno with building not just better athletes but better men — and women. He was saluted for his commitment to sportsmanship, loyalty, teamwork, character, academics and "winning with honor." He was called a good father, a good husband, a good neighbor, a good friend, a good teacher.

Players from each decade of Paterno's career spoke affectionately about him, saying he rode them hard but always had their best interests at heart and encouraged them to complete their educations and make something of themselves.

Though the Penn State campus has been torn with anger over the child-sex scandal and Paterno's dismissal, Jay Paterno said his father didn't hold a grudge.

"Perhaps his truest moment, his living testimony to all that he stood for, came in the last months of his life. Faced with obstacles and challenges that would have left a lesser man bitter, he showed his truest spirit and his truest self," Paterno said.

Only one member of the university administration — the dean of the college of liberal arts — and no one from the Board of Trustees spoke at the memorial, which was arranged primarily by the Paterno family.

Among the speakers were Michael Robinson, who played for Paterno from 2002 to 2005, quarterback Todd Blackledge from the 1980s and Jimmy Cefalo, a star in the 1970s. All three went on to play in the NFL.

Former NFL player Charles V. Pittman, speaking for players from the 1960s, called Paterno a lifelong influence and inspiration.

Pittman said Paterno pushed his young players hard, once bringing Pittman to tears in his sophomore year. He said he realized later that the coach was not trying to break his spirit but instead was "bit by bit building a habit of excellence."

"He was building a proud program for the school, the state and the hundreds of young men he watched over for a half-century," said Pittman, now a media executive on the board of The Associated Press.

Similarly, Chris Marrone, whose playing career at Penn State was cut short by injuries, said Paterno molded him into a young man with "the strength to overcome any challenge, any adversity."

Paterno was fired Nov. 9 after he was criticized for not going to police in 2002 when he was told that a former member of his coaching staff, Jerry Sandusky, had been seen sexually assaulting a boy in the showers. Sandusky was arrested in November and is awaiting trial on charges that he molested 10 boys over a 15-year span.

As the scandal erupted, Pennsylvania's state police commissioner said Paterno may have met his legal duty but not his moral one. Penn State president Graham Spanier was also fired in the fallout.

Among those at the memorial was former athletic director Tim Curley, who is awaiting trial on charges he lied to the grand jury that investigated Sandusky.

About midway through the ceremony, Knight became the first speaker to explicitly address the scandal. He said the coach "gave full disclosure to his superiors, information that went up the chains to the head of the campus police and the president of the school. The matter was in the hands of a world-class university, and by a president with an outstanding national reputation."

Lanny J. Davis, an attorney for the board, responded after the service by saying: "All the reasons for the board's difficult and anguished decision — made unanimously, including former football players and everyone who still loves Coach Paterno and his memory — reached a decision which was heartfelt. All 32."

"The facts speak for themselves" and include the grand jury testimony, he said.

After the memorial, Marrone said Knight was his "new hero" for expressing the "pent-up frustration" many people are feeling.

"I think the response that he got is indicative of how folks feel," Marrone said.

Jay Paterno, who served under his father as quarterback coach, began his remarks by imitating his father's raspy, high-pitched voice, telling the audience, "Sit down! Sit down!"

Growing serious, Paterno described his last moments with his father. As Paterno lay dying, his son kissed him and whispered in his ear.

"Dad, you won," Jay Paterno said he told him. "You did all you could do. You've done enough. We all love you. We won. You can go home now."

why are these people defending a man who allowed rape of young boys?? And yes, people, he might have not seen it happen, but he had a MORAL AND CIVIC responsibility to report it to the POLICE, not the campus cops, who, if you think about it...are employed by PENN STATE!! You don't think Paterno thought about that when he went to THEM instead of the real cops? And why did he wait four days?...Oh, yeah, it was the weekend! I don't care what he did for the school, charities, whatever, what HE DIDN'T DO OUTWEIGHS WHATEVER GOOD HE DID DO.

"Memorial exposes anger over Paterno's treatment"
How about anger over Paterno's ignoring the sexual assault on children.
      • Roflln 4 mths ago
Okay, tell me what you would do? You would report it and then what? You couldn't get involved the best answer you would get from any police, DA, etc. would be, we are looking into it. Then what? If you don't have control of where this person goes or does, what would you do? All of you who think JoePa could just wave his magic wand and have Sandusky removed from his office, which is all he had after the 2002 incident, you are wrong. JoePa was a powerful man on campus but he didn't control the whole school, including the police.

I would like to know how he IGNORED it if he REPORTED it???????? Explain that one to me, genius!!!!!!

sandusky was questioned by police begining in 1978 while penn st played on the road and continued with paterno and penn st looking the other way.

What I want to know is why nobody is ripping the actual witness for not going to the cops. If anyone had a moral duty in the matter, it was him.
      • Lee 4 mths ago
Yes he did. But so did Joe who was being deified today.
      • Phillip K 4 mths ago
I'd say when it comes to moral duty, Joe had less in comparison. Hearsay evidence doesn't often hold up in court.
      • Rob 4 mths ago
Morally, the graduate student who reported it to Paterno should have also told the police, especially when Paterno didn't do the right thing. Legally, if a student reports something to a teacher or administrator, it's those who actually work for the state that have the legal obligation to report. A student isn't an actual employee and may or may not know the law. Paterno was required to know the law. Paterno and any other staff who knew what was going on committed a crime by not reporting to proper authorities (police, CPS) and by covering it up.

I don't know this guy, only the facts that have come out. mcqueary THE EYE WITNESS still has a job and this guy who was told the day after, told the ppl who did a fake investigation and were exposed as LIARS. This guy did what he was supposed to do. Maybe it wasn't enough. What DIRTBAG SEES this and walks out? doesn't tell anyone until the next day. How about we get off Joe's back and onto the ppl who covered it up and the creep who pretended like he didn't SEE it. and sandusky is walking around free. had time to wipe all the filth out of his house and computer. the FREAKING POLICE are CORRUPT and VILE in that state. RIP Joe. sandusky WILL PAY for what he has done to everyone.
      • Ron 4 mths ago
The scene in the shower wouldn't have happened had Paterno not turned a blind eye to the FIRST accusation, back in 1998.
      • Dan 3 mths ago
What?! The police investigated in 1998 and nobody knew that until the grand jury report came out.
    • Marc OC  •  3 mths ago
THIS WAS NOT A 1-TIME ACT.

sandusky started getting questioned in 1978 while penn st was playing on the road. for all these years sandusky was at the center of questions on the road and at home while paterno was his head coach and vouched for him. it's not a 1 time charge, is been going on for so long yet paterno protected himself, sandusky, and penn st by allowing sandusky to retire after sandusky ADMITTED TO THE POLICE THAT HE MOLESTED A YOUNG BOY AFTER GETTING CAUGHT IN THE ACT!!!

paterno and penn st still allowed sandusky to keep the keys to the locker room and showers.

The interview Joe did with ABC before he died was an indictment in his own words of what he could have done and what he should have done…
    • Indigo1968  •  3 mths ago
Is Paterno is a victim then what does that make the boys raped by Sandusky under his watch? Penn State is sick.

This is not just one small mistake in ones life. This was a major mistake that affected many lives. Yes, he is responsible for this big mistake.

Do not see enough here about the CS eye witness, who witnessed an incident and did nothing, he is either a coward or real stupid or both. Furthermore shame on the incompetent campus police for not checking further with the information they were given from that eye witness who had more important information than any third or fourth party. Perteno can rest in peace knowing he did waht he was required to do, a coach is not a trained criminal investigator and it was not his job to follow up after he advised the campus police.

i keep waiting to get the news that joepa has risen from the dead. give me a break. he was human and made a big mistake. how many times since the incident with sandusky and the young boy in the shower did paterno see sandusky with other young boys.and what did he ever do about it. nothing

When are they going to get going with these trials? Its been months since it was announced. 13 years to investigate. Witnesses like Paterno are dieing off. I want to see the facts and what the Jury thinks before I pass judgment of the accused. PS: Paterno was a witness not a defendant.
      • MLA 4 mths ago
He wasn't even A WITNESS. He was TOLD by McQueary that something "inappropriate" had happened--hearsay. You know, HEARSAY is NOT allowed in a court of law. Joe did the proper thing by reporting it to the administration and campus police. THEY DID NOTHING.
      • DAVID 4 mths ago
@ MLA. Well said. Finally, someone gets it. It amazes me how so many readers crucify Joe Paterno for not going over the heads of his supervisors by reporting the alleged incident to the police. If anyone should have reported it to the police, it was McQueary since he claimed to be an eyewitness. If Paterno had reported it to the police, it would have been hearsay.
      • Mike 4 mths ago
That's #$%$...it's not hearsay when you report something to the police that someone else witnesses...it's not a courtroom....you are just reporting a POSSIBLE CRIME. He DID THE RIGHT THING by reporting it to the administration????? Yeah, and what did that result in....NOTHING. THAT IS WHY HE SHOULD HAVE REPORTED IT TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES....LIKE ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN WOULD HAVE!!! If it was your kid that Sandusky was raping....would you have the same backing of coach??!?!?!?

How you could associate with a man, let him on campus, and see him continue to be around young boys when you know he is a pedophile is just not something I can over look. I would cringe every time I saw the man knowing what he did. You have to do more than just the minimum to protect children. I think for those at Penn State that the football program was more important than the well being of innocent children.
    • Unavailable  •  4 mths ago
It's all 20/20 hindsight moral outrage. Joe Paterno did not know what has come out since an actual investigation was done. It's like someone coming to your door and accusing your otherwise respected neighbor of being a child molester. I would say to that person, then you have the moral obligation to call the police as I didn't witness it, you did.
    • Eric E.  •  Seymour, Indiana  •  4 mths ago
"If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno's response," Knight said.

Actually the villain would be Sandusky. What happened to Paterno was unfortunate, but let's not forget the fact that kids were horribly abused.
    • Marc OC  •  3 mths ago
How about anger over Paterno's ignoring the rape of children for over 20 years and allowing Sandusky free reign of the Penn St facilities to fuel his assaults.
    • Robert  •  4 mths ago
I'm glad he's dead (except I wish he had lived longer to suffer in poor health and disgrace). The real victims are the children he allowed to be abused. Only Porn State bozos are crying over this total POS!

It angers me as well as many others(and I am not a Penn Stater) that Joe went to his grave thinking he did something wrong. Regardless of what his son said, he took it like a man. He could of gotten defensive but he acted with dignity and accepted his fate BUT trust me, this ain't over. This man did what anyone of us would of done with second-hand information. Joe was not the police. he was a coach. It is sickening what the Board did to Joe.

Thank God for people like Phil Knight. This "the whole thing is Joe Paterno's fault" nonsense has gone on far too long already.
