Meredith Kercher's Family Is Not Ready to Forgive

The family of Meredith Kercher said today they still believe Amanda Knox took part in her murder and are in no mood to think about forgiveness.

Kercher's family spoke as the six jurors and two judges were deliberating whether to uphold or throw out the 2009 murder conviction of Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

The Kerchers have stayed away from the nearly year-long trial in Perugia, Italy, until today when they arrived to witness the appeals verdict.

Meredith Kercher's mother Arline was joined by her sister Stephanie and her brother Lyle. When asked if they believe in the original guilty verdict, Stephanie Kercher said, "We were satisfied with the verdict… Nothing's changed."

The family spoke with dignity, but made it clear they are intent on justice for the family member the remember as "Mez." Lyle Kercher said their hurt has not been eased since the November 2007 murder.

"It's very difficult to talk about forgiveness at this time, with the [media] hype around the case. And the defendant is involved in that. The brutality of it has been forgotten," said Kercher's brother, Lyle. "There comes a point when we are just battling against what's essentially a PR machine."

Family of Meredith Kercher Not Willing to Forgive

Referring to the gruesome autopsy photos that were shown during the trial and appeal, the brother said, "If we had them all up here," he said pointing to the wall behind him, "you would find it hard to forgive someone who had done that to your loved one."

"I'm not sure we'll be looking for forgiveness for a while," he said.

The Kercher family, who traveled from their home in Britain, are wary about the current attention on Knox instead of Meredith Kercher.

"It's been four years now, and the focus has shifted for obvious reasons onto the proceedings at court at the moment, but Meredith has been forgotten in all of it," said Stephanie Kercher.

If the appeal is overturned, Knox and Sollecito will be freed from prison. If the conviction is upheld, Knox may have to serve out her 26 year prison sentence and Sollecito will have to complete his 25 year term. Those sentences could be reduced or increased to life, which is what the prosecution is seeking.

Kercher, a student at the University of Leeds, was studying abroad in Perugia for a year when she was killed. She had been sharing an apartment with Knox, an American student studying abroad, and two Italian women. She was found partially nude and with her throat slit in her bedroom on Nov. 2, 2007.

A third person, Rudy Guede, 22, was also convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in her murder.

"Her death was unreal in many ways," said Arline Kercher, Meredith's mother, "and still is. I still look for her."

During her final statement to the court in pleading for her freedom today, Knox said Kercher was her friend, someone she "shared my life with.. She cared for me."

    Kercher's mother downplayed their friendship.

"I don't think they were that close... Amanda only got there in the beginning of October and Meredith was murdered on the first of November," Arline Kercher said. "I think they were friendly, but not that close."

The family remembered Meredith Kercher. "Mez was just a lovely girl ... she was always there for everyone," Stephanie Kercher said.

Arline Kercher cited a line in a story she read about the murder saying, "I think it happened to Meredith because she was all that they weren't."

A real computer expert should look, at Meridith's computer. It is almost impossible to ruin the information on a hard drive, without melting it or filling it up with new information. I think the information would either clear amanda or point to someone else the police are hiding.

There were FOUR females in that apartment, BRITISH,AMERICAN and TWO italians,The multi-million question is what did the TWO italians say about the murder?. I personally think the harm has already been caused, But the authorities have to find the cause and address the issue.
      • Philip 7 mths ago
They had addressed the issue .... they found all the evidence and the murderer. Fine if the DNA evidence was contaminated all they had to do was the appeal court could throw that out of court, but prosecutiona was not allowed to bring back the other evidence from the last case. All these other evidence fit with the crime commited by Knox and her Italian exbf, but the new Jury were not allowed to see this.
Just because the DNA was contaminated does not mean Knox did not murder Merridith, just like the glove did not fit therefore OJ Simpson is cleared and innocent.

I have no opinion one way or another, but as ever, I am tired of the biases of so-called 'reporters'. The family "spoke with dignity" is a value-judgment, or bias on the part of the writer, and should be kept out of reportage. That sort of writing is done to sway a party this way or that.

I wish I was God so I can videotape everything that has happened and give them to prosecutors to prove guilty if they're guilty, or give them to defenders to prove innocent if they're innocent. In the end, some cases close with no happy ending, Casey Anthony's daughter, Kaylee, never got her story told. If I was God, by God, I would whisper the truth to someone because that's a little girl's life right there.

        indeed !

I can't blame them for their anger. their daughter died and in a horrific manner, and they deserve a just & timely explanation for their daughters death for their own closure, just as Amanda deserves a fair trial. If Italian police screwed up the evidence, if they coerced her in any manner to say she was guilty, then Merediths blood is on their hands Not Amanda's, and they need to be made accountable to the Kerchers. If Amanda is guilty, she will have to live with it the rest of her life. I would hope that one day the Kerchers will get beyond the anger, not for Amandas peace of mind, but for their own. Anger, even that which is thoroughly understandable, eats at you like a cancer, and will not bring their daughter back.

I blame them for wanting to make Knox do decades of time in prison for something she didn't do. Screw them. They have the killer in prison already. Their daughter just hooked up with the wrong guy and they want to blame it on the other kids. It's #$%$
      • Denton Quinteroo 7 mths ago
Evidence points to that she did it. Sorry.
      • Elizabeth 7 mths ago
Denton I suggest you click on the abc link in the article and you will see just what so called "evidence" convicted her. Looks at the facts before making a such a misplaced statement.

Could someone clear this up for me please. Is the the prosecution's official determination that Guede, Knox and Sollecito all worked together to kill Kercher, or could they not figure out which of the 3 did it so they just convicted all of them?
      • sledgehammer 7 mths ago
The prosecutor originally charge the club owner where Knox worked but released him after he had an airtight alibi and Guede's DNA turned up everywhere. Then Guede implicated Knox and her bf after the prosecutor coached him and gave him a reduced sentence. The prosecutor says that Knox & her bf held Kercher down while Guede cut her throat. The prosecutor is a neurotic egomaniac more concerned with losing face than finding the truth. He should be disbarred and thrown in jail himself.
      • hvbjhv 7 mths ago
Bottom line is, Guede did it alone. Not only is there a lack of physical evidence tying Raffaele & Amanda to the crime, every criminal profiler that has viewed the evidence comes up with a lone perpetrator who has most likely done this before. That guy should be hung as far as I'm concerned.

Very good question. Just remember, this is a court case in Italy. Their laws may be very different from ours. The media both in Italy, England and the United States have reported on what information they could get with their own spin on the data. I too wish someone would answer that question.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  7 mths ago
I don't claim to know if she is innocent or guilty. I do know enough has been presented (publicly) to make me wonder. But, I am also not sitting in court listening to all the testimony.
      • Danton 7 mths ago
So really then, you don't know what you are talking about.
      • USA 1st 7 mths ago
AT LEAST HE ADMITS IT ! WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE danton???
      • Philip 7 mths ago
I know what he thinks .... Knox is Guilty ... it's just that he does not want to upset his fellow Americans. The truth will hurt.
    • Display Name  •  7 mths ago
The one thing that bothers me is how Guede took his time after the crime...used the commode, took a shower etc...With Meredith's body on the floor. Seems dude was NOT worried about room mates coming home...
    • Carlos H  •  7 mths ago
      RIP Meredith Kercher.
    • Cece  •  7 mths ago
No article ever tells if Rudy Guede, 22 said that the other 2 participated. Does anyone know?
    • John  •  7 mths ago
"A bare footprint that had allegedly been wiped clean just outside Kercher's bedroom was revealed by chemicals and matches Sollecito, they argued." How do you match a footprint that's been wiped away? Investigators with long hair not netted up? Holy crap, I never bothered with reading about this case. But that garbage didn't fly with the OJ prosectution and a murderer got off. This time it seems shoddy crime scene investigation is going to #$%$ a white girl. Imagine that, after Davis just got the needle with NO physical evidence. Interrogated in Italian, by the police AND the prosecutor, with no defense lawyer present? Police asked her to "imagine what might have happened at her flat had she been there", and that she explained this vision of Lumumba at the crime scene in response to that question? This whole thing stinks. You'd think almost 20 years AO (After OJ), that a so-called progressive country would have learned something about crime scene investigation. How did she ever get convicted?

It's not just about the verdict. For me the TRUTH should be closure. Hopefully the Kercher's can get that one day.
    • VampireLover  •  7 mths ago
There were FOUR women in that apartment?! What did the two Italian females have to say about what happened?
    • Yahoo User.  •  7 mths ago
My condolences to the Kercher family! The loss of their young daughter, under such horrific circumstances was very tragic! I hope proper justice is served in this case!
    • Phil  •  7 mths ago
Why is this article babbling so much about forgiveness? The issue is guilty vice innocent. If she is guilty, don't forive her. If she is innocent, she has done nothing to be forgiven for. The focus on forgiveness just shows that the author has prejudged the verdict to the point of completely dismissing the entire proceeding.

The only crime we can be sure of is that the press has murdered objectivity in absolutely everything they write about.
    • sam  •  7 mths ago
It is very troubling that some of you on this message board who are eager to hand out judgement, could be on a jury in this country. If any of us ever faces a jury of our peers, injustice may very well reign. Sad but true
    • Werd  •  7 mths ago
Google "amanda knox evidence" and read the article posted by "The Telegraph" today. 5 reasons why she could be guilty and five reasons why she could be innocent. You be the jury.
    • Elizabeth G  •  7 mths ago
A warning to people studying abroad. Not every country's legal system is like that of the United States. In some countries you are presumed guilty and have to prove your innocence. I am not saying this is right, but it is a fact. That being said, you never know wnat someone will do when a relationship is involved. I wasn't there when the crime was committed but I do not think it is as open and shut as people seem to think.
    • Don S  •  7 mths ago
The Kercher family should be upset with the OVER ZEALOUS AND MANIPULATIVE PROSECUTORS WHO CLEARLY DISREGARDED THE EVIDENCE and cut a deal with the LONE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR MEREDITH'S DEATH allowing THE #$%$ TO SERVE ONLY 16 YEARS FOR HER THE BRUTAL RAPE AND MURDER!!!!
    • yipes  •  7 mths ago
Hopefully, let's hope the truth will prevail. Hateful comments, either way, shouldn't decide guilt or innocence. By some of these comments, one would think they were all there and witnessed the crime. Let true justice prevail.
