    Mets Pilot Bond Investors Win But Team's Fans Lose

    The New York Mets didn't have enough money to make their $43.8 million debt payment on the $547 million of tax-exempt  PILOT bonds used to finance Citi Field last month, so Bank Of America loaned the Major League Baseball team $40 million until owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz can get their hands on some cash by selling several small stakes to investors.

    An independent auditor's report dated April 29, 2011 from KPMG LLP shows Queen's Ballpark Company, LLC, which is owned by the Mets and operates Citi Field, had net income of $52.8 million in 2010 after making $42.7 million in PILOT payments. With the team's revenue down sharply in 2011, it is easy to see why the Mets needed cash.

    But for whose benefit? While the loan didn't help fans of the cash-strapped team, saddled with over $400 million of debt, keep star shortstop Jose Reyes, it has helped investors in the PILOT bonds.

    For example, the Mets have another $32 million of PILOT bond debt (which they pay from Citi Field revenue) due in both 2013 and 2014. The largest single issue ($5.5 million principal) is cusip 64971PDC6, whose price has increased from $99 to $102 since early November.     For bondholders, the BOA loan was huge because as the Village Voice pointed out in February, the holding company for Ambac Assurance Corporation, which pledged to pay the PILOT bondholders if the Mets defaulted, filed for Chapter 11 in 2010 and doesn't actually have the cash to pay should the Mets not have the money. So given New York City's finances, the bondholders would likely be left holding worthless paper.

    Meanwhile, the team's payroll continues to shrink amidst reports of $70 million of losses in 2011 and the Mets have yet to pay back the $25 million they borrowed from MLB a year ago. So while the bailout of the New York Mets by Bank of America hasn't done diddly squat for the team's supporters, it has certainly helped institutional investors.
