Mexican Blog Wars: Fourth Blogger Murdered for Reporting on Cartel

Gang members in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, killed and beheaded the moderator of a social network, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.

"Hi, I'm Rascatripas," read the note on a blood-stained blanket left with the body. "This happened to me for not understanding that I shouldn't report on the social networks."

[More from Mashable: Netflix Is Expanding to Latin America]

The victim, known by his nickname "Rascatripas (Belly Scratcher)," was the moderator of a site called Nuevo Laredo en Vivo, which had posted information about the local drug cartel.

This is the fourth murder in the area in the past three months that appears to be related to victims' social media activities. Another blogger on the same site, Marisol Macias Castaneda, was found beheaded in the same location as Rascatripas in late September. A couple of weeks earlier, two bodies were found hanging from a pedestrian overpass with a sign (pictured above) that threatened, "This will happen to all the Internet snitches."

In the drug war that has killed more than 40,000 people since 2006, social media has become an important way for Mexicans to communicate news about drug cartel violence and to navigate cartel checkpoints and shootouts.

Contributors to Nuevo Laredo en Vivo urged participants on the social site to not abandon their efforts in response to Rascaripas's murder.

“No need to worry," wrote contributor Danlaredo as translated by Wired, "no way of knowing our data since WE’RE ALL ANONYMOUS, and the only way to know them, is that we disclose ourselves so PLEASE, follow the rules … and do not give your personal INFORMATION …. please!!!!”

Our military is on the other side of the world, running drone operations across a countries border (Pakistan) to kill high value terrorist and militant targets. Maybe we should bring that expertise home and put it to better use.

Wish someone would have told Baby Bush this - but Cheeney wouldn't have censored it.

Until the USA stops it's insatisable need for illegal drugs, I think everything else is a band aid approach.

Um, I think you people have missed one important point. The US govt has been caught sending weapons to the cartels under the Fast and Furious plan to circumvent the 2nd amendment. Also they have been caught being WAY involved in drug smuggling into this country. Google "Barry Seal". Cele Castillo and Iran Contra also. This govt is the problem. Sell out your country and get busted doing it and you'll get rewarded with a show on Fux news.

The goal, is to tear this country down so we can be merged into a one world govt system based on the criminality you see in our govt and other slimy corrupt systems around the world. Our govt no longer represents us and in fact, is actively working against us. It's a tough pill to swallow but necessary to move forward with solutions.

coming to a state called Arizona very soon!
      • Mike 6 mths ago
You are right but the federal government will not lift a finger to stop it before it gets to that point. They even help out the thugs by allowing them to have more fire power sent to them by special delivery.
    • Rickie  •  6 mths ago
Kill all drug thugs. Just blow them all away so that decent people can live in peace. Anonymous, post all the info you have on cartels - names, addresses, routes, codes, secret handshakes, photos - EVERYTHING. And let's kill these cockroaches on sight.
      • Mike 6 mths ago
I agree they are the slim of the earth and should be disposed of but how do you propose to accomplish the mission.
      • gerald 6 mths ago
you will have a tree hugging liberal that will cry the blues if that happens.

Send in the friggin military already and wipe out the cartels.

People of Mexico, you need to fight back. Die on your feet, or live on your knees!
      • whenSARSattacks! 6 mths ago
the cartels OWN the military. Also, somebody is funding the cartels by buying their products. Guess who they are? AMERICANS
      • DanielC 6 mths ago
Getting real tired of Mexicans trying to pin the blame on Americans for their own problems. Man up, fight back, call for help. Don't try to blame other people, ESPECIALLY potential allies.

Mexico needs to learn from other countries like Malaysia & Singapore, how they suppress these drug dealers. Hang to death if more than 1 lb of cocaine traficking.

        1/2 lb not 1 lb

How do we expect this to be contained in Mexico? This will soon cross our borders as cartel leaders feel safer in upscale neighborhoods in our country. If the river doesnt stop normal people, it sure wont stop thes guys. How many police and border gards are going to die as a result of our failure to stop this and enforce our borders. If i lived in the lower reaches of AZ or Texas, I would have 2 big dogs, an alarm system, and be armed at all times. I would have night vision goggles, and anything else that would save my family and belongings. I couldnt wait for the police or it would be over. I would deputize every resident that was a citizen with no felonies, and trade the police cars for body wagons. I would advise to shoot first and we will queation the dead afterwards for any violations.

What a sad state of affairs. The Mexican government knows who heads all of the drug cartels, yet they stay in power. That's because they control the government. It's unfortunate that the government won't step up and eradicate those that are helping to destroy their country. Mexico has the capability of being one of the most prosperous countries in the world. They have a huge labor force, lots of natural resources and just about anything grows in the climate. I guess drugs is easy money as compared to the hard work that t would take to reform the country. Their leadership should be ashamed.

The Mexican gove3rnment needs to controll their problem. the cartells are controlling them. How propostrous

I just did this vote on vacation destinations, and the best sounding one was in Mexico, swim with dolphins, horseback rides on the beach, sounded great. Then, you think, Mexico? Is it worth getting beheaded? The country is not ruled by a president, it's ruled by drug cartels. You couldn't pay me enough to go there, no law at all that isn't financed by the cartels. No thanks.

Some of you should study a little history! I don't mean ours! Since the beginning of recorded history Mexico has been one of the most violent countrys on the planet! Pick up abook on the Myan and Incan culture sometime, you might be surprised!
    • JJMurray  •  6 mths ago
These are the folks that are taking over a chunk of the southwest US because our government refuses to seal the border.
    • Nathan  •  6 mths ago
This is what happens when you have an ineffective government and you disarm the populace because it makes them safe (for the criminals) We are on track in the US to become like this if we are not careful, our government is corrupt to the core, but they still pretend they care for now (democrats and republicans)

This is coming to America soon. I must round up deport and prevent reentry of the illegals.
We must give them each a high powered semi auto with 5000 rounds when they are sent back. They do not have the right to defend themselves like we do. The cartels own the police and the military and they have the guns. The citizens of mexico must be able to shoot back.
    • Alexander  •  6 mths ago
End the war on drugs and the violence will end. Prohibition in this country didnt work with alcohol why would it work for other drugs? It just creates a criminal class and does nothing to stop drug use.
    • paw  •  6 mths ago
position harry reid, peglosi, shumer,......and other same ilk on the border to secure us from drugs and illegals.
