Mexican official: US travel warning 'ridiculous'

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's top domestic security official says a U.S. State Department travel warning on almost half of Mexico's states is "ridiculous" and "out of proportion."

Interior Department Alejandro Poire says million of tourists visit Mexico without incident.

Poire told a news conference Tuesday that he believes "these alerts overstate or misstate the standards and security situation that exists in our country."

The State Department issued an updated travel warning Feb. 8 urging travelers to "defer nonessential travel" to 14 of Mexico's 31 states due to drug-related violence that has cost more than 47,500 lives since 2006.

The warning notes "millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year" and resort areas are generally safer.

yah tell that to the families of the victims killed by the drug thugs . I liked Mexico but they need to clean up the drug cartels just like they did in columbia
      • Asustada-Indignada 3 mths ago
Well I think for that to happen should you as a country to stop using drugs, no demand no production business and if not, THERE WOULD BE SO MUCH VIOLENCE BY CONTROLLING THE TERRITORIES.
It is a joint effort, not only in Mexico, they also matter for you from your country, can not close their eyes and hope the problem will disappear as if by magic. But of course it's easier to blame others, to take the blame and responsibility we share.
      • Al 3 mths ago
yes thats right , it's Americas fault . what the drug cartels are doing is just as illegal and somehow Asustada makes it seem like what the drug cartels are doing is only because of the users over here . if it werent people here it would be somewhere else . illegal is illegal . we have laws against the use and distribution and law enforcment try's to stop it but mexicos law enforcment which is mostly corrupt cannot stop the cartels and the mexican marines are few compared to the cartels . I say the best way is to stop the flow and thats to build a big wall twenty feet deep and 20 feet high to keep illegals out just like any other country

yes , Pam , i agree and a pissin match never solved anything LOl , your right , i wish things were different and times were simpler cause back in the day we didnt have all these problems , nor were they as complex . I support none of these dilema's at least directly , after all who really knows whos behind so many of the bad things that are going on in the world . as i get older , i am finding that the people that we are supposed to respect and trust are not worthy of either which makes me wonder just how screwed up this world will be for our children

Alejandro, Many millions more Americans would like to visit Mexico and probably many would retire there if you all would get your security act together. I know I would like to, but not until I see a lot of improvement.

        haha!! that is funny
    • sane  •  3 mths ago
just wondering what is ridiculous and out of proportion about getting your head stuffed in a duffel bag. i enjoy mexican food and used to enjoy traveling down there as well, but enough to jeopardize mine and my family's safety.

Mexico, has to step up military patrols along all routes of tourist travel, or they will see a huge drop in tourist visit throughout Mexico, which would put a good size dent in their economy. No one wants to risk their lives, to vacation or what they thought would be a safe, and enjoyable Mexico vacation !

This guy reminds me of the mayor in the movie Jaws. A giant shark is killing people and the mayor is out there telling everyone on the beach how safe it is so that he can keep the party going and the money flowing. What a jerkoff.

Mexico's top domestic security official says a U.S. State Department travel warning on almost half of Mexico's states is "ridiculous" and "out of proportion."...and he said that just before settling into his armored limo and leaving with police escort to get a Starbucks.

I would agree with him. US said only half of Mexico is dangerous. They should have included the other half as well.
On a side note. Been to Mexico resorts several times, and felt safe. But I would not venture inland into the real Mexico by my self. Sad that such poverty exists so close to US border.

It is amazing how all of you here all of a sudden have amazing proof to criticize a place you only know because of its resorts... funny thing...

It is not about US citizens security (there are more than a million living in Mexico) but to keep tourism home. There are more people killed here than in MExico every year...

For the average traveller, the USA is fairly safe, but the numbers do not lie. There are more than 200 million guns in the USA and more than 50 murders a day, 10 times the rate of Germany. Nearly 5000 people die a year in truck crashes, about 6000 pedestrains die on the streets and 31000 people end their own lives. The USA now leads all nations in violent crime and leads all nations with incarcerations now standing at 2.3 million. American citizens also make up the greatest number of criminals serving time in overseas prisons. Militias, hate groups and other right wing radicals all spread their message of violence and are known to throw around the odd pipe-bomb. The government is not much better, spending a whopping $600 billion a year on defense in order to contain the handful of nations hostile to it.

This is so out of control, I'm a US citizen and have been in Puerto Vallarta for the last 6 months and feel safer here than in most cities in the states, we need to look in our own back yards back in the states before we judge others, somebody needs to tell me why the media isn't broadcasting all of the violence in the states?? why is it that the media's focus is all of the danger in Mexico? when in fact there is 25 to 30 % more violent crime in the states in all of Mexico? why isn't this being broadcasted all over the internet? Everybody is talking about the drug cartels but who is supporting them, where are they getting there guns and money?? HELLO!!!

perhaps it's time to stop vacationing abroad and keep US dollars at home, spent in US resorts and US restaurants and for US workers. The US has plenty of beaches, liquor, clubs and places to see, the grass is not always greener. Cant wait till I get back from living overseas
      • mitchel 3 mths ago
there is much to see in the world beyond the US I agree. But when it comes to economics and spending, perhaps the dollars should be kept at home and help improve the US economy before adding to tourism in other countries.

Ridiculous and out of proportion, how about the 21 Americans that have been killed in their Country, how about the thousand of Mexican killed in their Country. Mexico has become the Afghanstan Kandar of the America's.
    • Bob Smith  •  3 mths ago
Who needs to visit Mexico? If you want to see, hear, feel, taste, and smell authentic mexican culture just visit any border state. You even get the benefit of 3rd world crime rates and economy!

Mexico is governed by the world's most powerful drug cartel. The world's most violent city is not in the middle east is in Juarez Mexico just on the other side of El paso Tx. Sad but true. Corrupted mexican officials sound retarded with these kind of stupid statements.

I think a Travel Warning should be issued JUST for the city of Tijuana because of the literally "crappy" aroma coming from the river. Your waste disposal system STINKS!

Hey Mexico. Your government is ridicilous.
    • tektino  •  Beaverton, Oregon  •  3 mths ago
We all know that, for americans, there is no safe place but their own closet. No one likes them anyhow. Anywhere is UNSAFE for US citizens. Sorry Sam, no one likes you here.

      "resort areas are generally safer."

Tell that to the ones who never made it home. He is spitting into the wind.
