Mexican prosecutors detain top state official

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's top federal prosecutor says that the interior secretary of Michoacan state apparently met with the leaders of the Knights Templar drug cartel.

Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said Monday that Jose Jesus Reyna has been formally detained due to evidence he met with the top leaders of the pseudo-religious gang.

Murillo Karam says other Michoacan state government officials are being investigated for alleged links with the drug cartel.

Officials say Reyna's detention is part of an investigation that began shortly before purported Knights Templar leader Enrique Plancarte was killed by marines.

Plancarte was considered one of four leaders of the cartel. Authorities have killed or arrested most leaders except for Servando Gomez, known as "La Tuta," who remains at large.
