Mexico arrests 3 in slaying of governor's guards

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Mexican authorities say they have arrested three members of the Zetas drug cartel who later confessed to the June slaying of bodyguards for the governor of the northern state of Nuevo Leon.

A federal prosecutor's aide says the men were captured during a traffic stop Saturday.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns.

The aide says the men confessed to killing two of Gov. Rodrigo Medina's guards in June; a guard for a town mayor last year, and three police officers in May.

The suspects were identified as 24-year-old Arturo Garcia Celaya, 25-year-old Jose Daniel Hernandez Guzman, and 34-year-old Nicolas Yepes Alvarez.

The aide says Garcia and Hernandez were fugitives following a prison escape last December.

I am sure that the Mexican police could get anyone to confess to anything. In fact, it is rather hard to distinguish the Mexican police from the drug cartels. The Zetas are composed of ex-policemen after all. And many politicians are in the pockets of the drug cartels, for that matter. So who exactly is policing whom?

MONEY + DRUGS = CORRUPT POLICE + GOVERNMENT

        Zetas are ex-military not police.

First, where did you acquire your knowledge? I have first hand knowledge of the Federal and State Police in Mexico and have 35-years of law enforecement experience in the USA. This man was wanted - based on eye witnesses and other sources and he was arrested. Your insinuation is disgusting. Have you any sources or is it just your bigotry and hatred of police that prompts your comment. BTW The Zeta are not former polcie officers.

And the USA should legalize, regulate and TAX marijuana. If Mexican cartels have no US market for weed (their biggest export cash crop), they will lose money and power. And The USA can use the tax revenue from legal THC to fund education, healthcare and better benifits for Social Security and Military troops. Think of the HUGE $$$$ savings by NOT arresting (courts, jails, public defenders, etc.), people for weed. I don't smoke, but folks, its time to legalize weed. We can't afford not to any longer.

That makes as much sense as deportation & secureing the borders does! Owebama will not stand for that or anything benificial to the American public!

what do you expect from a......led by another......?
      • the Truth Hurts 6 mths ago
Get over it, Dusty. Just face it. Eric's department started an ill-advised ploy (while reporting to President Bush) to limit illegal guns. Now you hypocrites choose to ignore the facts behind this debacle. Holder inherited it.
      • Colleen 6 mths ago
TTH, you're the one who needs to educate yourself. Bush administration tried that stupid tactic with 250 guns, and realized quickly that too many were getting away. Soooo they terminated the action. Then along comes Holder and his catamites. They decided they'd try it on a bigger scale. That's when Fast & Furious began. Apparently Holder can't learn from Bush's mistakes, even when Bush states openly that it was a mistake. Both Bush and Obama are pathetic losers.

Most of the "hitmen" for the Zetas cartel are ex-special forces of the Mexican military - supported by a large bankroll of cartel money for buying equipment. Sending US troops down there would lead to a serious bloodbath on both sides.
      • the Truth Hurts 6 mths ago
        And you can prove this?
      • Sweet Baby J 6 mths ago
the core was US trained and I would guess under 20 everyone else is a wannabee. No I think the US forces would prevail and strike quickly at the heart of the group if allowed to do what they are trained to do. The problem is the Liberals who give Miranda rights to the foreign criminals and are afraid of harming a single hair on a civilian. It would be another Iraq where the narco terrorist hide in the masses.

These killers aren't very bright. They do all this stuff and then get caught at a traffic stop?
    • COLDSTEEL  •  6 mths ago
It is a corrupt, poverty striken culture. Fast cash is offered to poor, uneducated youth with no future for running drugs and carrying / using a gun. No wonder they work for the cartels, growing up in dirt floored shacks with little food and no hope. No easy answers South of the border, and the violence is spreading north into the USA. If the US started searching people going INTO Mexico (not just out of Mexico), we could slow down and or impact the flow of US guns and Ammo INTO Mexico, without implamenting more "feel good" gun laws and putting more useless restrictions on law abiding US taxpayers.

Will you just drop a bomb on their compund, and some napalm on their fields? Its cheaper than spending the rest of your lives going hockie for knockie with them, and losing YOUR assets.

Pretend its someone attacking your family. Destroy and take everything they have, and kill anyone that you can identify as one of them. Bomb their properties, napalm all drug fields, problem solved. They will relocate further south than your border, and the CIA can poison them.

Kill five and no worry about the death penalty. Such a civilized country where killers are sent to a prison with wine woman and song readily available. They will continue the affiliation with the gang and receive all the benefits.

Why are they bothering to arrest these guys? In the old west and back in the depression gangster days the authorities just hunted down the bad guys and killed them.

These Mexican cartel punks are barbaric animals and are as bad as the #$%$ and their antics. We need to put up a military blockade all along the southern border. There should be absolutely no border crossing either way. The trade between countries should be suspended until further notice. Absolutely nothing comes across the border or snipers shoot to kill. We need drone bombings and hard military enforcement against these cartels. They can choke on their drugs and any other contraband they may wish to bring across. We can resume normal relations once we get our immigration and laws straightened out and Mexico gets their cartels under control. We have the three stooges running things, King Barry struts around looking down his nose at everyone, homeland security chief Butch Nopolitano waddles around telling everyone how safe Mexico is, and while King Rat Eric Holder and the ATF are planting automatic weapons with the mexican cartels he fumbles around with whether or not to give our civil rights to terrorists.
