Mexico city's police force held for investigation

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — The entire police force of the northern Mexico city of Linares is being held for investigation of possible corruption and ties to organized crime. Mexican soldiers and Nuevo Leon state police are patrolling instead.

The detention of more than 100 officers comes after a rise in kidnapping and extortion in the area. A series of investigations in other towns already has put hundreds of officers in custody.

Linares Mayor Francisco Medina Quintanilla told Milenio Television on Sunday that his city's police officers were put on buses and driven to another town. They will held there by state investigators while they are investigated.

Linares is about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of the northern industrial city of Monterrey.

Does anyone know the percentage drop in tourism is for Mexico this year versus 3 years ago? It has to be huge. I would never go there under these conditions. I wonder how they make up for the lost revenue...

      what a shocker. lol!
I used to go to TJ in the 80s and it is was a well-known fact that you are better off running into thugs than the cops in Mexico. They are the most corrupt, evil and dangerous ones down there.

You obviously do not know this but it is totally legal for a Mexican in Mexico to own a gun. Legally the weapon needs to be registered at the nearest army base and there are restrictions on the caliber of the weapon. A Mexican citizen can also get a permit to carry the gun on their person. There is one army base near Mexico City where a weapon and ammo can be purchased. It also is legal to purchase a gun from a private individual but it must be registered, once again at the nearest army base. The major problem is the average working person in Mexico barely has enough money to purchase food....equeal in price to US prices and gasoline which is about $3.25 a gallon. There just is not enough money to purchase a weapon.

Please cite a source for that Jefferson quote. The Jefferson Encyclpedia states "This quotation has not been found in any of the writings of Thomas Jefferson"

I wonder how life would be in Mexico? It is interesting how close it is to the United States, a whole new world is just a short flight away.

The war on drugs is not to eliminate drugs; it is to ensure the profits are collected by the right people.

We should put in imbestigation all the police force north of the border, some of them are transporting guns to supplied the pasifico cartel and are involbe in gang activities from elpaso the same ones that kill and kidnaped 100's of woman in Juares.

Empty the apple barrel and start over. If you want fresh apples then go to the tree to pick fresh ones.

Corruption is just more obvious in Mexico. Every politico to ever get elected in Illinois was or is a murdering gangster, present President not excluded. Still, we need a big electric wall on the southern border, zap em all, let doG sort 'em out

i bet if you drug tested randomly all the people involved in financial dealings and lawmaking, we could really find out who is using all these drugs. after all who has the money to spend nowadays.

Corruption, sure. But consider the offer that was made to them from the cartels.

The problem with interdiction generated black markets is NOT Mexicans. The problem
with black markets is black markets. Alcohol interdiction in the US turned
Americans into murderous gangsters just as drug interdiction has turned
both Mexicans and Americans into murderous gangsters. The problem
is still black markets. No amount of ranting about a 'culture of corruption'
will change the simple, iron clad laws of economics.

All of Mexico's police are being held by all of Mexico's police. Big bonuses are expected by all of Mexicos's police!
