Mexico: Drought hits water supply for 2.5 million

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Forget lawn watering or car washing: A drought has dried up even drinking water supplies for an estimated 2.5 million people in more than 1,500 small communities in northern Mexico.

Social Development Secretary Heriberto Felix Guerra says water has to be trucked in, treated on the spot and stored in tanks for many of those towns.

Felix Guerra said Friday that seven Mexican states are suffering from drought while other parts of the country have been troubled by such severe weather as floods or hail.

The secretary notes that the trucked-in water is for drinking and doesn't help problems with crops and cattle. He estimates farmers have lost 2.2 million acres (900,000 hectares) of crops to dry conditions this year.

Don't fool with mother nature. Sorry how are we going to water the golf courses when the gringo is coming to play.Do not kidd yourself our watermanagement is also wastefull. We grow the wrong crops in many places in soil that requires to much watering. The south american indians could have given us lessons in agriculture. The next wars mayby will be over water.

Probably because all the retards are moving to the desert where no on is meant to live.

It isn't mother nature who is in charge of the eliments . It is , however , FATHER GOD , and he is the one who will end the drought , if the people will turn from their wicked ways and ,PRAY . Then GOD will heal the land . The effectual , fervent prayer of a righteous , person , will accomplish much . That applys to the whole world and not to a region or nation . 2nd CHRONICALS , Chapter , #7 , starting at verse #14 .

Only 3% of water on Earth is freshwater and most of that is frozen. As it melts it will find its way to the oceans making it too salty for human consumption. We use roughly half of our electricity to move, treat, and heat water. Assuming viability, desalination through reverse osmosis will consume an even greater percentage of energy for additional treatment. Population is at 7-trillion and growing. With it, demand is increasing. Once the glaciers feeding fresh water to India and China finish melting (estimated before 2050), some 7 to 10 billion people will become refugees and despite for want of water. China is already mining fossil water (that's mile deep aquifer ground water that is not readily recharged) beyond pumping ability for agriculture. We use about 70% of our fresh water for growing food, 20% for industry and the residual 10% for human consumption in urban areas. If Mexico lacks drinking water, how will they feed their people? - All wars are over resources. Religion is merely the excuse used to influence the cannon fodder between those who control the resource and those who covet it.

desalinization plants run off of solar energy seem like they will be a more common answer in the future. I would like to see a water tax imposed upon large households that live in low water areas (L.A. and Vegas) and credits to those same people who move to high water areas. L.A. and Vegas should not have been built!

JO , you have a follower , the meXocist . way to go . I'm sure that is encuraging ? ?
    • willie  •  Richardson, United States  •  6 mths ago
The fools around the world had better get off their butts and start building de-salinization plants. The worlds water-supply has been disappearing for years ! Even the crooks in D.C. are going to get thirsty ::::::
      • mad 6 mths ago
Our oceans are getting so polluted that desalination won't make the water safe
      • jack 6 mths ago
well, we can either desalinate or desalinize--too many suffixes and we will suffer by desalinizationfullness(ish)

this is happening here too, havent you people looked at the drought in Texas? Its happening closer to you than you think.when it happens to your area should we blame it on all the people on drugs or on all the people in L.A. or how about all the casinos and golf courses in Vegas. you people amaze me with the mean stupid comments you make.
      • cflashback 6 mths ago
Caralina I think they even amaze their selfs thinking they will get a tumbs up if someone agrees with their stupid ideals!!!! Your right this is happing here in Texas as well the only thing we can do right now is wait till the drought is over then we have to build stroages are getting ready for the next time. some think putting a pipeline would be great to one that reaches across the United States shiping water from areas that do flood and moving it to those areas which are in need of it. just a ideal which should or could be considered if people in or around texas have any common since left.
      • Rusty 6 mths ago
2nd Chronicals , chapter # 7 starting at the 14th verse , [ KJV ] , HOLY BIBLE . GOD , gives us the instructions on how to end the drought . Prayer is the pipe line to all the living water we will need .

Used to be that All Towns across the U.S. had Water Towers that collected rainfall for just this situation....guess that's just too backwoods for some politicians who want to make their towns look all shiny & smart.

    • shelly  •  6 mths ago
It's going to become like Africa, the people with no water to drink, sad. There will be organizations to help them, Churches, et. and then there own people to do something about it.

Droughts are nothing new. Idiots who want to live or farm where there is not a reliable source of water should not be surprised. Perhaps attention to history would help.

There is a lot of people who dismiss the scientists who are claiming a global warming problem is underway, but if they are right, changing weather patterns will have a significant impact on water and food supplies. Those are basic necessities for life and their absence or shortage can lead to skyrocketing prices at best, or, at worse, to wars.

I have been attempting or trying or better still beating my Head against the Mexican Burocrats for 10 yrs. on every level to build water treatment plants in many cities and states all over Mexico. I hit a dead end because it seems they wanted my technology and equipment but didnt want to pay for it. What is really F.U. is most of the cities had gov grants to help them build the necessary plants as needed in the most desolate counties-puebla's ...They would not even turn loose of a small portion of the money to even do a market anylasis construction consultation with blueprints, working diagrams and finished water gpm of clean water, which they All so desperately need. Being that most of the cities Public water utilities commission I spoke with were almost out of clean/potable water while dumping their raw sewage into the rivers, lakes, streams, creeks and holding ponds constructed outside of town.
MEXICO HAS A MAJOR WATER PROBLEM BUT TOO STUPID AND GREEDY TO ADDRESS THAT LIFE OR DEATH ISSUE. DUE TO THE FACT THAT IN EVERY CITY FROM THE MAYOR, ENGINEERS, UTILITY COMMISH, ON DOWN THE CHAIN OF COMMAND ARE TOO BUSY STEALING THE MONEY. ITS A CLASSIC CASE OF THE RICH STEALING FROM THE POOR, SO THEY CAN SATISFY THEIR OWN GREEDY WANTS & DESIRES.
      THIS IS ALL THE TRUTH...VERDAD!!!
below is a list of just a few of the towns I spoke with, interviewed with made proposals too and spent many many waisted hours trips and MY own money to do my best to help those people solve a Major problem.
      the entire state of Jalisco
Arandis [ George Mayor in charge of total corruption & surrounding puebla's
Manuel De Blado [From the Mayor on down] raw stinking sewage in the canals and holding ponds. One entire lake is nothing but run off sewage.
      Cueramaro [Jesus Soto] corrupt mayor
      Cialo
      C.D. Victoria }CORRUPT THROUGHOUT{
San Luis Potosi "Grupo de Agua" the whole lot are CROOKS
San Luis de la Paz...all under the same Grupo de Auga
and the list goes on and on
10 long years of my life money and diligent effort went into a MEXICAN
      DRY WELL
      ...for NADA...NOTHING
Wake up, cause you gonna be dirty and thirsty and NO crops one of these days...REAL SOON!!!

During the recent heatwave I understand Mexico was sending electricity as far north as Dallas to keep our AC running. Now we can't figure out a way (or be willing) to help them. Great realtions. Should make for ever better understanding between neighbors.
