Mexico fires nearly 1,000 police in Gulf state

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) — Nearly 1,000 police officers were fired to weed out corruption from the violence-ravaged Gulf coast state of Veracruz, Mexican authorities said Tuesday.

Veracruz police chief Arturo Bermudez said 980 state agents have been dismissed in the past couple of weeks after failing lie detector and other tests. Only 27 percent in the 6,000-member force have taken the tests.

Tuesday's announcement comes four days after Mexican President Felipe Calderon said Veracruz state had been turned over to the brutal Zetas drug cartel.

The state has seen a rise in drug crimes since mid-2011. Sixty-seven people have died in two recent mass killings apparently linked to the Sinaloa cartel targeting the Zetas cartel. Calderon has deployed troops and federal police to Veracruz.

Earlier Tuesday, Mexican federal police said they detained the leader of a drug gang locked in a bloody battle for control of the Pacific resort city of Acapulco.

Christian Arturo Hernandez Tarin was detained Tuesday in the central state of Mexico, the Public Safety Department said in a statement. Police said Tarin led a gang known as "the street sweeper."

Hernandez's gang has been fighting against the local Independent Cartel of Acapulco for control of the coast city since the 2010 arrest of suspected Texas-born drug capo Edgar Valdez Villareal, known as "La Barbie."

The department said both groups broke away from Valdez's organization because they didn't like the group's new leader, sparking a wave of violence that has terrorized people in Acapulco.

If all Mexican cops have to pass a lie detector test to keep their jobs, then you can be certain the entire police force in Mexico will be fired.

I think our police force and politicians should be hooked up to lie detectors also...
      • Marcy 7 mths ago
and they should have to take UAs
      • John 7 mths ago
Many of our large city police departments have been subected to lie detector tests for decades. I thing people posting comments should at least know a little about the subject matter.
      • Lou C. Ferr 7 mths ago
I agree... My comment concerned where there are court cases and the judge takes the word of the cop over the prosecuted...even though the cop is lying.

6000 total Officers, only 27 Percent have taken the lie detector test so far, and still 980 offices have been dismissed... That's 1620 tested, 980 failed at a percentage of 60% failed. Shows how wide the corruption is...

Woohoo, to all those people who post angry comments about the Mexicans taking our jobs and/or proposing all sorts of vicious things to be done to Mexicans..you now have the opportunity to take a job in Mexico as a cop. Especially rewarding since you can take out all your redneck anger on the Mexican cartels legally and get paid for it.

It should be a requirement to serve in office here in the states. At one time I believe 7/11 applicants were required to take a lie detector test. Heaven forbid we hold elected officials to the same standard as working people.

And who will be sending their pictures online to prostitutes? weener is gone, America can't do without some nut case in office
    • Harry  •  Guaymas, Mexico  •  7 mths ago
Did they give a lie detector test to the Chief of Police? Not likely. Corruption in Mexico starts at the top and works it way down and does not start at the bottom. If you went into the capital of Veracruz and yelled stop thief, the governor and everyone else in the capital would run.
      • John 7 mths ago
Many police chiefs and politicians have been tested, fired and arrested.

      • Nobody Special 7 mths ago
The corruption in Mexico is exactly the same as the corruption in the US. The only difference is Mexico is doing something about it.

Lets have Holder and the rest of the DOJ take lie detector tests. Calderon is trying to weed out corruption (no pun intended), but when self-serving people infiltrate law enforcement and positions of power and influence, it becomes a fight for existence. I wonder how far our government has been infiltrated? It seems apparent from the financial collapse that corruption runs deep across the globe. Without people in power that commit their existence for the greater good of the people, collapse and total anarchy is inevitable. It just a matter of when it will occur. We all owe it to ourselves, our fellow humans, and the future of humanity to be educated voters, and make sure we do not support people that exist as puppets of the Dark Force.

"...Mexican President Felipe Calderon said Veracruz state had been turned over to the brutal Zetas drug cartel."

So can Mexico and the US finally admit the War on Drugs has failed?
    • Ryan  •  7 mths ago
I wonder how many of these fired cops are already either working for a cartel or have snuck into the USA?
    • FrankB  •  7 mths ago
Now where do you think the majority of them will end up finding lucarative employment?

    • Okie Dokie  •  Marathon, United States  •  7 mths ago
No Problem. USA President Barak Obama has a U.S. Attorney named Eric Holder who authorized his minions to buy guns in Arizona and deliver them to drug dealers in Mexico.
The drug dealers shoot Mexican Police and U.S. DEA Agents and Holder AND OBAMA just wipe their hands.. Google "Fast and Furious" OBAMA put tens of thousands of weapons in the hands of drug cartels that his holyness now wants to disavow. ERIC HOLDER NEEDS TO BE TERMINATED BY CONGRESS.
