Mexico horror: Gunmen dump 35 bodies on avenue

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Suspected drug traffickers dumped 35 bodies at rush hour beneath a busy overpass in the heart of a major Gulf coast city as gunmen pointed weapons at frightened drivers. Mexican authorities said Wednesday they are examining surveillance video for clues to who committed the crime.

Horrified motorists grabbed cell phones and sent Twitter messages warning others to avoid the area near the biggest shopping mall in Boca del Rio, part of the metropolitan area of Veracruz city.

The gruesome gesture marked a sharp escalation in cartel violence in Veracruz state, which sits on an important route for drugs and Central American migrants heading north.

The Zetas drug cartel has been battling other gangs for control of the state.

Prosecutors said it's too soon to draw conclusions from the surveillance video.

"We're not going to confirm or deny anything," Veracruz state Attorney General Reynaldo Escobar Perez told the Televisa network Wednesday. "We're looking at it in different ways, we're seeing different numbers, that's why we don't want to get ahead of ourselves."

Escobar said the bodies were left piled in two trucks and on the ground under the overpass near the statue of the Voladores de Papantla, ritual dancers from Veracruz state. He said some of the victims had their heads covered with black plastic bags and showed signs of torture.

Among the bodies was a local police officer who had gone missing two weeks ago, Escobar told W Radio in Mexico City. He told MVS Radio many of the victims were strangled, some bled to death and one person had been shot dead.

Escobar did not return phone calls from The Associated Press.

Police have identified 32 of the victims so far and maintain they all had criminal records for acts such as murder, drug dealing, kidnapping and extortion and were linked to organized crime, said Magda Zayas, spokeswoman for the Veracruz Attorney General's Office.

State Gov. Javier Duarte said on his Twitter account "the killing of 35 people is deplorable, but it's even more deplorable the same victims chose to extort, kidnap and kill."

Duarte said an intelligence database shows the 35 victims had a criminal background.

Motorists posted Twitter warnings said the masked gunmen were in military uniforms and were blocking Manuel Avila Camacho Boulevard.

"They don't seem to be soldiers or police," one tweet read. Another said, "Don't go through that area, there is danger."

Veracruz is currently hosting a conference of Mexico's top state and federal prosecutors and judiciary officials.

Local media said that 12 of the victims were women and that some of the dead men had been among prisoners who escaped from three Veracruz prisons on Monday, but Escobar denied the escaped convicts were among the dead.

At least 32 inmates got away from the three Veracruz prisons. Police recaptured 14 of them.

Drug violence has claimed more than 35,000 lives across Mexico since 2006, according to government figures. Others put the number at more than 40,000.

The Mexican Government looks incompetent. We’re going to look at surveillance video? How about you grow a pair you bungling fools. You have an army. You know exactly who is responsible. Take a decisive action and ensure this never happens again.

In the 35 years we have waged the war on drugs, what good has it done?
I can name one, made a lot of people very rich, both legally and illegally.
      Has it reduced drug use?
      Answer: No

There will be no 'war' on drugs as long as part of the profits end up in the hands of the lawmakers.

Prostitution and Drugs go way back into our history. It will never be gone from our society any day now so, why not control it? The Dutch, for example, saw this and now there is a Prostitution Union where the "members" are getting regular health check-up. Also, the soft drug -weed in this case-is also controlled even though the rules changes every so often, now, it seems, you have to be a member of a club in order to smoke there or, at least that's what they want in order to avoid foreigners from coming into the country and be able to buy as much weed as they want. (I think it's dumb 'cause its a loss of revenue).

Mexican border needs to be sealed tight, nobody crosses either way !!!!!
      • A Yahoo User 8 mths ago
How about we close all of our borders? You have criminals mainly serial killers escaping the place, coming here and making the place into a living hell. Don't even get me started on the Muslims and Europeans you fools allow into your country which also have a good chance on migrating here and setting up camp.

I agree with you 100% my friend, we need to start looking out for America. My opinion ,we need to cut off people coming here from anywhere for the next 20 0r 30 years.

2010 statistics of countries with the highest murder rate per 100,000 inhabitants......

      Honduras 78
      El Salvador 65
      Venezuela 48

      • neversurprised 8 mths ago
In the US it's 21 Mexicans per 100,000, so your figures aren't accurate.
      • Amcn 8 mths ago
21 Mexicans per 100,000 PEOPLE living in the US, or 21 Mexicans per 100,000 MEXICANS living in the US? I'm not sure what you're saying. The stats are straight from Wikipedia.

I am presently reading about Pablo Escobar in the Medellin drug cartel in the 80's. This type of thing reminds me of what is in that book. What bugs me the most is that the U.S. is more concerned with stuff half a world away and does nothing about what is happening right here on our continent in our neighboring countries. Not all of those who were killed were criminals. The 12 women were probably just in the wrong place or were family of the opposing drug cartel. Meth is a bad drug, and far worse than cocaine, which was the cause of the drug wars in Colombia where Reagan sent DEA, etc.

It wasn't the liberals that worked hand in hand with drug dealers that came to light during Iran contra. That was the CIA. Its is well documented. Also happened during the Vietnam war! To me it sounds like a business that the US government has a hand in running. Along with the business men in this Nation. Wonder where all that indignation was when it happens during a republican administration?

The BATF made arrangements with the gun dealers in the Southwest to let people "Strawbuy" Guns and take them to Mexico and sell them to drug dealers so they could see where they showed up! Many people were killed because of this! This is still under investigation! Once again our goverment F#%s Up!

This is one thing I can agree with the Ron Paul supporters out there. The War on Drugs is and has always been a losing battle.

We're in an arm's race with people who are obviously as evil as they come. The harder we fight the more money the drug lords make. The more money they make the more cut throat they become in order to fight their competitors. We spend fortunes. And for what? So we can keep Americans who want to get high on something from doing so. No matter what we do there is no way we can stop the drug trade.

Legalize the drugs and take away the profit motive for these psychopaths. With a fraction of the money that we would save by no longer funding a war on drugs we can treat the addicts here medically instead of incarcerating them.

Whether the number of dead due to drug violence since 2006 is 35,000 or 40,000...the point that's hard to miss is the public hasn't been safe, they aren't safe now, and they likely won't be any safer in the future until changes are made to try and correct that.

It's way past time for Mexico to take it's country back.
    • Whoohoo  •  8 mths ago
Definitely drug lords killings among themselves (without doubt, innocent civilians as well) and all due to easy access in trafficking illegal substances through the borders. I can only pity for the very poor and desperate to make a quick buck being taken advantage and caught up in a gory nightmarish reality. Should this not be described a form of terrorism? Just cause the U.S. is the bordering nation to the north, know that any other nation in legal business with Mexico should also contribute to stopping this violence. The border between U.S. and Mexico needs further restrictions to be implemented.

Where are Mexicans that have demonstrated on the streets of L.A. blatantly waving their flags around and demanding equal rights for illegals? Where is their so called "La Raza"? Have they no cojones to go out in the streets of Mexico and deal with this druglords in their own homeland? Is it easier to just run to another country whenever things get scary?
