Mexico Navy takes over traffic police in top port

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) — Authorities say the Mexican Navy has taken over traffic policing duties in the port city of Veracruz, which has been plagued by drug cartel violence.

Veracruz state Gov. Javier Duarte said in a statement Monday that two rear admirals are now the directors of traffic police in the neighboring cities of Veracruz and Boca del Rio.

The move is part of an effort to root out corruption from law enforcement and start from zero in the city of Veracruz.

In December, the police departments in both cities were disbanded and taken over by the Navy. Authorities said the departments had been infiltrated by the Zetas drug cartel. In Mexico traffic police are separate from other police departments.

Mexico must impose marshall law for a short period of time in order to take back control. 99% of the mexican people are good people. We just have to kill the 1% which are the cartels and some politicians.

Cant the same be said of gangsters and drug distributors on the USA side?
      • Juan Reyes 4 mths ago
The US has a lot more control than Mexico does, so marshall law would not be required here. However, there are certain areas that would benefit from an increase of police force in order to reduce gang activity.

        I honestly don't think it's 1%, probably more like 10%.

They know who is in charge of the drugs and know the foot soldiers and where they live. They are simply reluctant ot go after them for fear of reprisal from the gangs. When a cop makes $200 a month is offered a $1,000 bribe or risk being gunned down it is very hard to maintain your principles.

They are killing the cartel every day down here but the media in the states only print a few examples. Some are afraid yes and many take bribes but the battle against the cartel is working for the people a little at a time. It would go faster if Obama and Holder would quit helping the cartel.

Same thing happened in Key West in the 80's...all the cops were arrested, all were on the take. Great port of entry for drugs...probably still is.

(Read all this with an open mind before you post a reply) Most of you armchair commandos write your ideas on how to fix a very big problem, and some of you, not all are Racists and/or cowards, hide behind a keyboard and writing hate, and whether you like it or not, you are either a part of the problem or a part of the solution, if a part of the problem, please sit down, shut up and stay out of the way. If not, get out of your comfort zone and do something to help, in America, Mexico or where ever you are. Now before you ask the questions I am always asked, I will try to answer them the best I can.
      1. Then what I am doing about anything to help, I am an American citizen on social security and helping the churches in Mexico to for an example, feeding needy families, and other Churches do give alcohol and drug rehab, what I do may not much, but I do what ever I can. I am a 70 year old widower, but I still want to help make a difference.
I burned my car up traveling up and down Mexico taking pastors where they needed to go, but will not stop because of a little set back. I work a little slower, as I have to take buses to where they need and want me. Oh yes I know, you say only a fool would live in Mexico but I love the people here, they are truly genuine and am too old to worry about someone who might want to killing me down here.
      2. Am I for gun control because of the killing down here by the cartel? No I am not for gun-control; I am a Life Time NRA Member and know from experience that gun control does not work. Yes they have strict gun control laws in Mexico but that is their business, I am not here to meddle in their politics and do not want to either.
To the ones that do not understand my point here sorry, maybe if you read this enough times you will understand. The only thing that really matters, being a Christians or not, is if this stirs some of you into action and helping others, in the community you live in or anywhere, or if for some reason you can not do it yourself, find some place and donate something, just stay involved please. If some of you do this, I have accomplished what I wanted to do.
If you want to ask any other questions, ask away, but if you are some of the few that want to write hate towards me and other people still, do not bother, it is very childish and I will not answer, it means nothing to anyone anyway.

The Navy and it's Marines are doing a very good job, it will taking a little time to clean up the mess and does not need any obstructions but in the way by Holder.

very true many are pansies who have no idea what happens outside of their let alone the world. All have a opinion about something they have no knowledge of. If we allowed them to run the world we would have no laws that would harm a persons self esteem and everyone would do what ever they want free from prosecution

Kenneth it's nice to hear from an educated person with a good heart. These ignorant comments come from either uneducated people or people with no real life experience besides whats in their own neighborhoods. I have much respect for and wish you nothing but the best in the future.

Love how some of you people know how to "fix" Mexico’s problems. 80 % of all Americans don't have passports so you haven't been here. Over 40,000 Mexican have been killed since 2006 in the drug wars (mostly cartel on cartel) in the same time frame over 67,000 Americans have been killed by each other. Mexico has a growing middle class America has a shrinking middle class. Mexico has universal Health Care America does not. Mexico has a housing program that pays part of your ability to buy a house based on how much and how long you work America does not. Mexico has term limits for it's politicians America does not. Mexico subsidies collage tuition for everyone that wants to go to school America does not. The list goes on and on so tell me why America is soooo much better?

The Mexican government may also hire Mexican and American "contractors" to fast tract the cleaning process. I think America can help finance the hiring of the contractors to counter the armed goon as what America did in Irag.
