Mexico: Resort town shoppers trapped by gunfight

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) — Hundreds of people cowered for about two hours inside a shopping mall in this resort town Saturday while security forces traded sporadic gunfire with armed men in the parking lot and then searched stores for suspects.

No one was injured in the gunbattle, but some cars and entrance doors to the shopping center were damaged, authorities said.

Police said they arrested two men who were also suspected of being involved in an overnight attack near the mall that killed a Mexican marine.

Authorities said the shooting at the Plaza Sendero shopping center erupted when marines and police found armed men in the parking lot about 1 p.m. Police ordered shoppers and employees to stay inside during the battle and the later search of the mall.

The military said army troops arrived to help secure the area and caught one suspect, who was turned over to city officials. The soldiers also provided security for the shoppers and employees inside the mall, who were allowed to leave around 3 p.m.

Instead of saying that hundreds cowered, peerhaps they should say that hundreds showed good judgement by staying out of the line of fire.
      • SeanJ 7 mths ago
No, cowered was correct. Been there? Why do you think the country is in the state that it is? Because everyone there cowers when they should be fighting back.

SeanJ - Nice for you to say, sitting at home in your Barcalounger with your chicken wings and beer.

Sean, I suspect you will not believe me, but I have been to Mexico many times. I did not much care for Matamoros or Juarez, but enjoyed Mazatlan, Alcapulco, Cozumel, and have visited Mexico City and Vera Cruz. I have not been there since the arly '80's and I am sorry that things have changed so much for the worse there.

I reapeat, don't go there unless you are determined to support a extreamly corrupt government made up of ignorant murderers and drug dealers. That place is a toilet.

Ah Mexico! A beautiful country with endless potential and natural resources. If only it wasn't run by morons.
      • perpetuategoodness 6 mths ago
Well those are my thoughts exactly. I do not get it. People say, the USA "WAS" Mexico. The key word is "was" and if the good people of Mexico do not stand up and take back their country, they will lose the rest of it.
It baffles me that Mexico has all the resources they need to thrive and they deal with terrorists (which is what the cartel are) and killing of their own people.
Generally, you have mass killings in regions where there is a political agenda or a fight over land....... not in Mexico, they just kill each other.

Those #$%$amp;#39;s remind me of the people we have in Washington .... they are ruining our country with their corruption and greed ... soonwe could have the same problems Mexico has ... look around it's aready started here ... it's coming across the border ...

      • Micro . 7 mths ago
Yes they do. Come on over and see for yourself. They really do sightsee bullet riddled Detroit. In fact, I've taken people to the very heart of it and shown actual vacationers around.

I've only been to Detroit only once but I don't know about the rest of you posters, but the people of that fine city treated me royally. If the way they treated me was typical, I would like to spend more time there. GOD bless Detroit.

My brother lives in Cabo and i just got off the phone with him and Cabo San Lucas shut off all its night activities since there was a threat from one of the cartels that if they dont free two of their people by tonight they will attack downtown Cabo, so the authorities just declare a curfew starting at 10:00pm tonight until they can fix the situation (which they wont) and advise to people NOT to try to trick or treat since is Halloween Weekend, I feel sorry for the tourist that are there having a vacation right now. there is a video of the shooting that happened last night, I tried to posted here but Yahoo keeps hiding my comment, anyway its pretty intense if you dont know that was a video from Cabo you will think is from Afghanistan or Irak, just search for it in the "tube" "You" (if i dont put it like this yahoo takes care of it.

If we don't soon close our border, this mess will spread to our western states. The seeds are already planted in the form of million of illegal aliens.

Mexico will not fix the gang problem because 1: They are afraid. 2: They make more money leaving them alone. (the probable truth)
    • Marja  •  6 mths ago
It's so sad and heartbreaking how much violence is in Mexico these days. Drug cartels forcing people in drug rehab to work for them or die, slaughter of innocent people, entire cities unsafe. I don't know what the answer is, but it's a sad, sad shame that people have to live with such horror. I can't even imagine how bad life must be.
    • Snipe  •  Langley, Canada  •  7 mths ago
CABO SAN LUCAS?? Well there goes the tourist industry in that neck of the woods.. The Mexican government must be making more from the drug cartels than tourism.... Sadly, boycotting the tourist resorts will only punish the local people and have zero effect on the Mexican, drug fueled violence..
Isn't it time to declare marshall law and clean house - OR - are the drug profits that good?

So what is the BIG story here? Something like this goes on in El LAY every week and nobody blinks an eye. And if you happen to be a white person who strays into one of these cesspool-neighborhoods--- good luck! And liberals want to allow MORE of these kind of people into our country? We've got too many of them already--- NOW, how's that Amnesty idea working out for ya'?
