Is Mexico's 'secret economic boom' killing illegal immigration?

New research suggests incomes and quality of life are improving south of the border — discouraging Mexicans from illegally sneaking into the U.S.

Illegal immigration may be a thriving political topic, but as a cross-border migration trend, it has "sputtered to a trickle," at least from Mexico, reports Damien Cave in The New York Times. And a growing body of research points to a surprising reason why: Income, employment prospects, and life in general is getting better in Mexico, making the arduous trek north less appealing. Officially, Mexico's per capita GDP has grown a sluggish 10 percent since 2000, notes economist Dean Baker. But has a "secret economic boom" ended the 30-year flow of Mexican migrants to El Norte?

There's nothing secret about this boom:  Of course Mexico is an increasingly better place to live, says Matthew Yglesias at ThinkProgress. It isn't rich or particularly well-run, but thanks to its transition away from authoritarianism, and the superior access Mexican companies have to the lucrative U.S. market, Mexico is clearly "richer and better-governed than it was 20 years ago so people are less inclined to leave." The only surprise is that "these realities have tended to escape the debate in the United States."
"Improving living standards in Mexico driving reduction..."

But the economy is just one factor: There are many reasons why the illegal immigrant "population in America is pretty much stagnant," says Moe Lane at his blog. Sure, life is better than it used to be in Mexico, but Mexicans are also staying put because their families are smaller, legal visas are easier to get, and "skyrocketing narco-terrorist-related activity" is making the border more dangerous. And that last reason is why we still have to "build that damned fence," pronto.
    "Illegal immigration down?"

This lull in immigration is a golden opportunity: "Increased surveillance and fencing" is actually another cause for the drop in border-crossing, says Joe Klein at TIME. And the U.S. economic slump has helped Mexico's expanding opportunities look even better, too. But whatever the reasons illegal immigration has "fallen off a cliff," it is "lovely news." If we were smart about it, we'd use this "relative stasis" to finally reform our troubled immigration laws.
"But who will tend our gardens?"

Did you liberals read the first part of the article? "SNEAKING INTO THE U.S. "ILLEGALLY"! During the depression in the 30's Hoover DEPORTED thousands of "ILLEGAL" aliens to protect Americans jobs! After World War Two Truman DEPORTED hundreds of thousands of "ILLEGAL" aliens to protect jobs for returning American service men! In 1954 Eisenhower DEPORTED over two million "ILLEGAL" aliens, mostly Mexicans to protect jobs for Korean War Veterans! It took over two years, but the U.S. Govt. got the job done! Those were men of honor, not the vote pandering coward professional polititians that run every state in the country, and Washington! If they tried to do this today, the hand wringing, guilt tripping, gullible, street stupid, white liberals would be howling at the moon in defense of "ILLEGAL" Mexicans!

Now we "deport" the jobs so the mexicans can make a living in their own country.
Pretty soon you will have americans sneaking over the boarder to Mexico to find a job.

In case you hadn't 'noticed,' Obama has deported over 400,000 illegals every year since he has been in office.

        To "rosa" blanca.
You sound ignorant enough, so you probably ignore that with those deported Mexicans where American Citizens only because their skin was brown and they have latin last names,so if you think you are "safe" because you drink "butt lite" with a handfull of "whitetrash" friends think again.

Killing illegial immigration? I'm all for it.
    • Eric1  •  10 mths ago
I think the 'boom' you are hearing about comes from the guns of the drug lords. Actually an increasing amount of illegal immigration is from Mexico, but NOT by Mexicans. It is a variety of Central Americans passing THROUGH Mexico (and the Mexicans are taking advantage of them too).

I think they've caught on that all of the American jobs are going to Mexico so why make the trip across the border.

      We have no jobs here.

If we were smart about it, we'd use this "relative stasis" to finally reform our troubled immigration laws. We do not need to reform. We need to enforce.

Reform those immigration laws, stop birthright citizenship for all temporary and illegal immigrants.
Require deportation of illegal aliens when caught.
Streamline immigration court to only allow stopping deportation proceedings in specific circumstances such as proven persecurtion if they are returned.

Maybe our depression, and lack of construction jobs is the answer. Since the high paying, new construction(formally union thug), jobs like electrical, plumbing, masonry, and etc. are vanishing. So the giant sucking sound that was drawing them north is over.
      • Bill 10 mths ago
That may be partially true, but even if construction workers worked for no money the costs are astronomical. With the economy so bad companies who need a building buy properties from companies like KODAK who own massive amounts of property so that they only need to renovate. I now in Vegas so many projects have ground to a halt. I have to give the unions credit, they don't like to hire illegals, it makes the senators they buy a little nervous.

If this is the case, then why is it such a bad thing to send all the illegal immigrents back to their home countries?
    • Fred C  •  10 mths ago
Republicans wanted cheap labor. Now that they have lowered our wages and killed unions, they no longer need them. We get to work for nothing now. Good job Republicans. You used illegals to lower our wages and get votes.
      • Bill 10 mths ago
We have an untapped source of labor that refuses to work and yet tax payers give them money for doing nothing! Instead of giving the jobs to illegals get those bums on welfare to work doing the jobs illegals once done. Americans are "just too good" to perform such menial labor.

Come on Fred, the (D) are just as guilty of this problem if not more so. They are historically famous for having mass citizenship ceremonies and then having representatives register them to vote (D) on the spot. I have been told this by witnesses to the process.

There are still 12 million illegal immigrants in the US. It'll have to get a lot better in Mexico, apparently.
    • Fletch  •  10 mths ago
So the US Goverment is trying to fix the illegal immigrant problem by crashing our economy while Mexico's economy strengthens. In not time those that are here illegally will just go home because they have better opportunities there. I was wrong to doubt congress and the President. BRAVO. If we make it bad enough Mexico will build the border fence for us to keep those illegal gringos from coming to steal jobs from hard working Mexicans. REELECT all the incumbants!

disclaimer: there was a lot of sarcasm in this post

I love the fact that NYS allows illegal immigrants to get a driver's licenses'. When they go to the DMV I would use that as an opportunity to deport their #$%$ It's also sickening that illegals can get any US government aid and they're still illegal. I really don't like the idea of making every citizen whether they were born here or naturalized carry a government issued papers but it may come down to that.
    • hottamalie  •  10 mths ago
      Well, one should hope so!
    • Arf  •  10 mths ago
Why go back? The U.S. gives them welfare, sanctuary cities, free education, future dream college largesse.
    • Yahoo  •  10 mths ago
      illegals ET says phone home..
    • JERRY D  •  10 mths ago
##$% I dont buy it. these wet backs will be sneaking into the U.S.they have it better over here than the u.s. people have it.shoot em at the border that should slow them down
    • Elise  •  10 mths ago
they will never stop flooding over here
    • John  •  10 mths ago
The Europeans in Mexico are the ones getting the jobs and prospering. The Mestizos will continue to flood to the U.S. because they still will be kept in poverty. People need to realize that racial issues exist in Latin America which determines who has the money.
