Is the Michele Bachmann migraine story sexist?

The Daily Caller sparks an outcry with a report on the presidential candidate's supposed 'debilitating' headache problem

With her meteoric rise in the GOP presidential polls, the spotlight continues to shine on all facets of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn). On Tuesday, a story at The Daily Caller harshly illuminates the presidential hopeful's supposed migraine problem. "The Minnesota Republican frequently suffers from stress-induced medical episodes that she has characterized as severe headaches," writes Jonathan Strong. "To staff, Bachmann has implausibly blamed the headaches on uncomfortable high-heel shoes, but those who have worked closely with her cite stress, a busy schedule, and anything going badly for Bachmann as causes." The article quotes both anonymous and named former staffers, and notes that the congresswoman takes a "significant amount of medication" to manage her "debilitating headache episodes." Is this a sexist smear?

No. Migraines could affect her ability to govern: "If Bachmann really does have debilitating migraines that put her out of commission for days at a time, that's relevant, gender-neutral information," says Jessica Grose at Slate. While I can understand why some commentators might think this is biased, it really isn't. Let's remember the uproar over John McCain's health in 2008. "It's possible that the Caller article was just a bunch of disaffected former Bachmann cronies dissing their former boss," but it's also possible that this is information that voters need to know.
"Reporting on Michele Bachmann's migraines isn't sexist"

But there's a sexist implication here: There might be some sexism here if you read between the lines, says Noreen Malone at New York. "Migraines happen to be overwhelmingly a woman's problem, and (though Bachmann's are supposedly stress-triggered), they are often linked to both menstruation and menopause — unavoidable biological side effects of being a woman." While the story might have been the same for one of the male candidates, given the nature of migraines, it's hard not to see this "as a reminder of the cave-man argument from way back against women holding office — that they might be undone by their hormones in moments of great stress."
"Is the Daily Caller's Michele Bachmann migraine story sexist?"

Besides, you can have migraines and be president: I'm anything but a Bachmann fan, but this migraine story "is deeply ignorant and unfair," says Dana Goldstein, a contributor to The Nation and The Daily Beast, at her site. Migraines are often discussed in a sexist manner, "with the implication being that women who suffer from migraines can't handle normal levels of stress." Of course, a number of factors can trigger migraines, and many sufferers are able to manage the condition and lead productive lives. Thomas Jefferson and Ulysses Grant both had migraines, while Kennedy and FDR had chronic medical problems and "popped pills." There are plenty of reasons Bachmann shouldn't be president. Let's talk about them, not her migraines.

I have had migraines since I was 13. I would get them at least once a week. Over the years, I tried many different medications and none of them really worked. I still wouldn’t be able function properly for at least 24 hours. When I turned 21, I realized marijuana was the only thing that could get rid of my migraine in minutes. No pain, no nausea. It truly is a miracle drug for me and in the last 10 years, I have only had one or two migraines. It basically "cured" my migraines. It is a shame our government will not legalize this drug.

Dawayne Wade and Serena Williams also suffer from migraines, as do I, and they do OK. I have held a professional position for 15 years, and the majority of the time my brain functions much better than most. Although the pain can be overwhelming, and even make you severly sick (vomiting), migraines do not typically impair your thoughts. And migraine medication targets blood vessels in the brain, so other than giving herself a heart attack, these medications do not impair her abilities. They are not narcotics or pain killers, etc.

I've had chronic migraine for many years; gave up an honors degree because I couldn't make decisions/concentrate during critical moments in a semester if I was in migraine mode. My family knows that I can't make decisions in even insignificant situations if I'm about to have, have, or have just had a migraine. With many years of such experience behind me, I wouldn't vote for a Republican, Democrat, man or woman who the country--the planet--depends on to be capable of making world altering decisions 24/7. I have had migraine seizures, and I've never been hospitalized; if Bachmann has been, and has missed votes, she has strong migraine episodes, and has already demonstrated she is not a suitable candidate for this particular job. I wish her the best, I totally sympathize, and I hope that one day, as it well might, her migraine episodes die down, then, as a woman, I hope she has the opportunity to run again, although, as a registered Democrat, I probably wouldn't vote for her (full disclosure).

I'm not real thrilled with having a recovering coke head for President, but we're stuck with him for a while longer.....a short while.

Heh which one, you could be talking about quite a few of our former Presidents as well as the current one.

Here's a TIP, it wasn't BUSH to whom I was referring. He was a drunk.

The Daily Caller is run by Tucker Carlson who was fired from CNN for being too conservative and getting his #$%$ handed to him on his own show by Jon Stewart. So the whining of liberal bias does not compute here.As for Bachmann, stick a fork in her, she's done. The POTUS cannot be zonked out on migrane meds when that 3 am call comes.

Wow I really believe this anonymous and disgruntled former employees. This speaks volumes for the author's credibility.

If this story line doesn't get enough publicity, I'm sure they will make up some others.

There's nothing sexist about it. It's just the media, doing what they always do. Digging for any possible negative slant on a conservative candidate, while giving the libs a pass on everything.

No doubt they always kick in whenever her husband suggests a little 'sexual anarchy' late at nite...
