    Michigan officials oppose Lansing casino plans

    LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A proposed tribal casino in Michigan's capital city is opposed by the state's governor and attorney general, who say in a recent letter the plan is "inconsistent with state and federal law."

    The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians stood by its plans for the downtown Lansing casino Monday despite the letter last week from Gov. Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette.

    "We're familiar with their opinion, we respect it, but we disagree," said Roger Martin, a spokesman for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe. "We intend to continue to vigorously pursue what we believe is our legal right."

    The tribe plans to buy land in downtown Lansing and set up an off-reservation casino. The letter from Snyder and Schuette says they're not aware of any legal authority supporting the tribe's legal theory related to the casino.

    "For these reasons, we respectfully advise you that the State will take whatever steps are necessary to prevent the opening of the proposed casino, and if the Tribe persists in these efforts, it does so at its own risk," the letter read.

    The Lansing casino also is opposed by American Indian tribes that separately operate casinos in Mount Pleasant and near Battle Creek.

    The letter from Michigan officials says the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe's plan appears to be based on buying property in Lansing with money from the Michigan Indian Land Claims Settlement Act. Michigan officials said the tribe believes the land would have to be taken into trust by the federal government, but otherwise would be exempt from other federal laws designed to limit casino gaming to specific tribal lands.

    Michigan officials also say the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe's plans may conflict with some gaming compacts signed with the state.

    Snyder, following a speech Monday in Detroit, told reporters the methodology of classifying the land in Lansing as tribal land has "some serious questions."

    Michigan has more than two dozen casinos, most of which are owned and operated by tribes.

      Where is this proposed casino supposed to be? Any help from people from the Lansing area?

        The back end of the casino will be connected to the Lansing Center across the street from the Nut House and will run parallel to Cedar St. (across the street from the ballpark) all the way to the City Market. Google Images: Lansing Casino.
