Micro-Bubbles Cut Cost of Algae-Derived Biofuel

Click here to listen to this podcast

Algae naturally produce oil. When it’s processed, that oil can be turned into biofuel, an alternative energy source. There’s just one snag—harvesting the oil from algae-filled water is prohibitively expensive. But researchers have come up with an effervescent solution: bubbles smaller than the width of a human hair can help reduce the costs of collecting algae oil.

So-called micro-bubbles are already used for water purification—they surround contaminants and float them out of the liquid. Similarly, in water containing algae, bubbles can float the algae to the surface for easy collection and processing.

The research builds on previous work that used micro-bubbles to grow algae more densely and thus increase production. This time, however, the researchers produced the fizziness with a new method that uses far less energy, and is cheaper to install. The study is in the journal Biotechnology and Bioengineering. [James Hanotu, HC Hemaka Bandulasena and William B Zimmerman, "Micro-Flotation Performance for Algal Separation"]

Although micro-bubbles improve algae harvesting in the lab, they still have to work at larger scales. The researchers are planning a pilot program for an algae biofuel plant, in the hope of making really green energy.

      Awesome, go science!

To put it mildly, commendable. The culmination of these efforts should be to cultivate seaweed in order to avoid environmental concerns, and to foster job creation.

These fuels are already being used by the Navy, the oil extraction also has the same use for Jet fuel, plastics, and even cosmetics.. Look up Solazyme.. It is a true renewable fuel source, in large scale could replace fossil fuels...

Gotta love that American ingenuity! Thank you scientists!!!!! I only wish we had a president that said were gonna do this and were gonna do this by a certain year! Where's JFK !

Ummm, 6 feet under I think.

I think this is a nice step forward but I do find it amusing that the greens would support this because biodiesel ect still produces co2 when burned and many of the proposed large scale algae to biofuel plants are connected to coal fired plant flues as a source of food. Having to force the flue gas underwater would require some additional energy which equals more coal burned but with a likely reduction in aerosols et al

large scale algae biofuel coexisting with coal plants would lead to the most evil of ideas more profit for coal companies and ~zero co2 reduction.

Actually this does reduce co2 emission because you get more energy from a given amount of carbon...to get the equivalent amount of energy with traditional systems would require more fuel and hence more carbon emissions.

and to build on D, the fuel generated could be used to create the bubbles, reducing overhead costs and thusly the cost for the fuel

Thirdly, the algae itself would be a counter to CO2 production, consuming CO2 as part of it's diet. (Thanks to D and Maxwell for beating me to points 1 and 2)

We should be concentrating on hydrogen production and storage. With limited hydrocarbons available, we'll need hydrogen as a combustable fuel. There is a conundrum that exists when it comes to the potential for a hydrogen economy. We will never have a demand for hydrogen when there is no abundant and reliable supply. There will never be a supply, because there is no real demand. Capitalism won't create a hydrogen economy. It's going to take government intervention, It's going to take a plan. Here's mine: Using a surtax on hydrocarbon fuel, the government can buy "otherwise-not-used" excess electrical power at half rate and commit that electrical power to hydrogen production. They will pay energy companies to produce, compress and store hydrogen gas. The government would own the hydrogen and sell it upon demand. Once there is enough fuel stored and being produced to sustain a hydrogen fueled economy, it will emerge and the whole thing can be released into the capital economy and everyone can live happily ever after.

I would suspect that algae farms would be like fish farms today. Should have no adverse impact on the general environment.

Not sure if you're being ironic or not. Fish farms adversely impact the general environment.

Left to his own wishes, Obama would have the U.S. carpeted from sea to shining sea with wind farms, solar panels, and algae covered ponds. There would special farms where super hamsters would be raised on steroid, and there would be an executive order that ALL households will have a super hamster powered generator.... What a vision!!!

You know this how?? Nothing to offer??
      • JS 3 mths ago
        Steroids are not organic :)

Before endorsing such a grand idea, I would question what impact would harvesting and processing seaweed have on the oceans' delicate ecosystem.
      • WAB 3 mths ago
Seaweed is not algae. Completely different organism. Algae is the stuff that grows naturally bodies of water, like a lake, slow running streams and the pool in your back yard. Most people try to control it, rather than grow it.

That said, there would be no impact to the oceans ecosystem... or the environment in general. The byproducts of this process can be used as raw materials for other marketable products... so no waste. Its a closed cycle process.

If we could get the algae to grow on the electric windmills, I believe we could power the teleprompter for at least as long as it took to throw away half a billion on solyndra. Go Green

It doesnt matter. After all the money the liberals will blow studying this the enviroterrorists will fight against actually starting production. So we just as well keep on drilling.

Lies, lies, and more lies. Brought to you by the U.S. Department of Energy, which exists to hand out political favors to corporations that donated to the politician's campaign coffers. These efforts to harvest algae into fuel are attempts to defy the laws of physics. You can't defy the laws of physics! Dr Chu, the head of the Department of Energy, won a nobel prize in physics, yet he continues to endorse projects that fundamentally contradict basic economics and laws of conservation.
