'Midnight in Paris,' 'Descendants' win WGA honors

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Woody Allen's romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris" and Alexander Payne's family drama "The Descendants" have won top screenplay honors from the Writers Guild of America.

With his biggest hit in decades, writer-director Allen earned the guild's prize Sunday for original screenplay on "Midnight in Paris." The film stars Owen Wilson as a modern Hollywood writer who gets a chance to hang with his literary idols in the 1920s Paris of Hemingway and Fitzgerald.

Director Payne shared the adapted screenplay honor with co-writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. Based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, "The Descendants" stars George Clooney as a Hawaiian dad struggling to tend to his two daughters after a boating accident puts his wife in a coma.

The wins boost the prospects for both films to earn the same prizes at next Sunday's Academy Awards, where both movies also are in the running for best picture.

But not all key Academy Awards contenders were eligible for the Writers Guild honors, including Oscar best-picture front-runner "The Artist." The black-and-white silent film is competing against "Midnight in Paris" for original screenplay, but "The Artist" was ineligible at the Writers Guild awards because it was not made under the union's contract guidelines.

The guild's prize for big-screen documentary writing went to Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega for "Better This World."

    Among the guild's TV winners:

    — Drama series: "Breaking Bad," Sam Catlin, Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould, Gennifer Hutchison, George Mastras, Thomas Schnauz and Moira Walley-Beckett.

    — Comedy series: "Modern Family," Cindy Chupack, Paul Corrigan, Abraham Higginbotham, Ben Karlin, Elaine Ko, Carol Leifer, Steven Levitan, Christopher Lloyd, Dan O'Shannon, Jeffrey Richman, Brad Walsh, Ilana Wernick, Bill Wrubel and Danny Zuker.

    — New series: "Homeland," Henry Bromell, Alexander Cary, Alex Gansa, Howard Gordon, Chip Johannessen, Gideon Raff and Meredith Stiehm.

"Midnight" totally missed the mark. Was okay as a rental, but not worth seeing in the theater.
"Descendants" was very well done, and good Hawaiian feel. Clooney was really good, too.

I totally fail to see what all the fuss is about regarding "Midnight in Paris!" It was one of THE most BORING movies I've ever seen! Barely had plot or character development. The idea was cute - and the photography worth mentioning - but, the chemistry between Owen and his girlfriend was lousy, the "characters" were not developed, the story could have been told in 10 minutes, and I did not find one decent laugh, much less a chuckle. I gave this film a whopping 2 out of 5 stars.

"Midnight in Paris" was one of the best films he has made! The script, was original, and witty, the emsemble characters were delightful, the dialogue really humourous, great costumes, art direction, photography, just fantastic! I hope to see the other films listed, especially "Hugo" I unfortunately saw "The Artist" and it was one of the WORST films I have ever seen! slow, boring, trite, corny, and full of cliches! I am not surprised that they did not follow the union rules, probably to exploit the crew, and save money!

The literary references were so wrong they were laughable. MIP was horrible.

Saw "Midnight in Paris" on DVD over the weekend to see if the praise was justified--AND IT IS! A delightful, whimsical fantasy with all the classic Allen trademarks---understated humor, subtle insights, and keen observations on the nature of nostalgia, love and finding true happiness. I'm glad Allen, in the twilight of his career, can still make us smile.

So far Midnight In Paris gets my vote as best picture and I've seen all except The Help.

It's difficult to compare the two. They are very different. Both are excellent.

"Midnight in Paris" should have been called "Asleep in Paris" because it was probably the most boring movie I have ever watched. At first the inclusion of literary figures was interesting but after a while it was an utter snoozefest. Hang it up Woody, you're done.

The biggest problem that I had with Midnight in Paris was I could see absolutely no reason why Wilson's character had ever been interested in the fiance character, or she in him.

We thoroughally loved Woody Allen's brilliant film, Midnight in Paris. To us it meant that the movies can still deliver the right stuff. Hope this Movie is given the recognition/awards that it so richly deserves. Woody Allen is a treasure.
