You might not have to wait much longer for a 5K Retina iMac
Apple is apparently testing Retina iMacs internally, 9to5Mac and Jack March have learned, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company launch such new desktop computers in the following month, as soon as OS X Yosemite is ready for public launch.

9to5Mac says Apple is currently in the late testing phase with Retina iMac running Yosemite and packing better internal components, such as faster processors and improved Wi-Fi antennas, in a similar body as the current iMac design.
On top of improved hardware, Apple is also reportedly working on updates for iMovie and Final Cut Pro to support 4K video editing in the future.
It’s not clear at this point what actual resolution the new iMacs will have to offer. Previous leaks hinting that Apple may be working on high-resolution iMacs revealed that Yosemite includes references to various resolution such as 6400 x 3600, 5760×3240, and 4096×2304 that could fit such Retina displays.
March, who has provided details about Apple’s rumored 12-inch Retina MacBook Air in the past, said that Apple is planning to launch only a 27-inch 5K iMac this fall, meaning that buyers looking for a smaller Retina iMac won’t be able to find one just yet.
March further revealed that the 5K iMac will offer a 5120 x 2880 resolution, AMD graphics, a faster 4.0GHz Intel i7-4790K Haswell processor, but added that it won’t have USB Type-C ports. According to his source, Apple is “incredibly likely” to announce the product at its next press event, which is tipped to take place in October.
