Milky Way Owes Its Shape to Crashes With Dwarf Galaxy

Two collisions with a dwarf galaxy over the last nearly 2 billion years may have been the cause of the Milky Way's spiral arm structure, scientists say.

The new findings hint that impacts with even relatively small galaxies have played an important role in shaping galactic structure throughout the universe, researchers said.

In trying to explain the shape of our own galaxy, the Milky Way,  with its prominent spiral arms rooted in a central bar, scientists have traditionally dismissed the influence of outside forces, even though astronomers have seen shape-changing mergers of other galaxies.

For their study, scientists focused on the nearby Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, much of which had been ripped apart by the gravitational pull of the Milky Way, leaving debris that forms a huge but very faint stream of stars around our galaxy. Altogether, this dwarf galaxy might have once been far more substantial, maybe 100 times more massive. [Photos of Great Galaxy Collisions]

"Sagittarius was among the largest of the Milky Way's dwarf satellites before it began to be torn apart by galactic tides, but objects on that scale are still relatively small details in the eyes of many galaxy-formation theorists," said study lead author Chris Purcell, an astrophysicist at the University of Pittsburgh."It had always been assumed that the Milky Way had evolved relatively unperturbed over the past few billion years in terms of its global structure and appearance."

However, in computer simulations, Purcell and his colleagues found this dwarf galaxy's collision with the Milky Way might have had dramatic consequences. It may have triggered the formation of our galaxy's spiral arms, caused the flaring seen in the outermost disk, and influenced the growth of its central bar.

Their models also could have generated ringlike structures wrapping around the Milky Way, similar to ones actually seen in our galaxy, such as the Monoceros ring.

Astronomers have seen mergers of galaxies with smaller companions, known as minor mergers, and mergers of galaxies of equal mass, so-called major mergers. Minor mergers such as that of the Milky Way and the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy are expected to be far more common than major mergers.

"We may well learn to generally view intermediate-scale spirality in systems like the Milky Way as transient symptoms of recent impacts involving satellites too faint to see," Purcell told SPACE.com. "Future observations of nearby galaxies may even begin to discern the brightest of such companions, which will help solidify the phenomenological link between minor mergers and spiral arms."

The scientists are detailed in the Sept. 15 issue of the journal Nature.

If you find this type of thing cool, there is a program available on the internet called "Universe Sandbox" which is just as the title implies, a space simulation program. It costs 10 dollars, but you are able to create (and destroy) your own Galaxies, solar systems, planetary nebula, etc etc. You can even "play" with an objects mass or velocity realative to the other bodies. I would highly reccomend checking it out if colliding galaxies is your thing... you can make your own colliding galaxies. Or add a couple more Jupiters to our solar system... or make the sun 10000 times more massive and watch the ensuing destrcution. But I should let you know that it is a simulator... NOT a game... although it's just as fun as a game.

IR studies also indicate that the far side of the galaxy from us is curremtly in collision with another dwarf galaxy.
Which will be as nothing compared to when the larger Andromeda galaxy collides with us in a few billion years.
Which should ultimately result in a single large Elliptical galaxy and an eventual merger of each galaxies central black hole into a monster Whole that might even briefly reactivate the new galaxy as a quasar.
In which case let's hope for the sake of future earth life that our sun gets tossed up and out instead of down and in to the maelstrom to come. (Although imagine the exhilarating night sky a billion years or so from now when andromeda keeps looming larger and larger in the night sky. Or the view from some of the globular clusters that would show both galaxies in insipient collision!)

That's so cool! To think that perhaps spirality is not the "base" state for a galaxy -- irregular is, and spirality perhaps only occurs as everything is disrupted during a collision. That's fascinating! It brings the Whirlpool Galaxy immediately to mind, though I don't know if that's really the ideal example. (The Whirlpool Galaxy has a dwarf companion which, from our vantage, appears to sit right at the end of one of the spiral arms.)

Since spirals and their variants are the majority of intermediate size galaxies that would imply that collisions amongst galaxies are fairly common and normal.
Which given an ever smaller and denser universe from the beginning to now may not be too far off the mark for speculation.
