COMMENTARY | Patti Stanger, the famed "Millionaire Matchmaker," made some especially ignorant comments over Bravo's call-in show "Watch What Happens Live," Sunday night. Stanger perpetuated stereotypes of not only gay men but smart women and Jews. She apparently thinks so highly of herself that she can put an array of people down with her uncalled-for slurs.
Stanger has managed to anger many fans of the Bravo show, some of whom are calling for her to be fired. Although there is never a good time to make the statements she did, the "Millionaire Matchmaker" picked an especially bad time; she has not had much success in her own relationship or her matchmaking efforts.
Could this be the final straw for Stanger and her reality television show? The obnoxious woman has yet to prove that she is capable of matching two people in a relationship that actually works, and the 50-year-old can't even keep a relationship together in her own life either.
With so many bigots in our country, the last thing we need is another one reinforcing old stereotypes. Stanger is a joke, and it's time for her to find another job. I bet the Tea Party would gladly put her to work.
According to ABC News, Stanger told a caller to the show Sunday, "In the gay world, it will always be open. … There is no curbing the gay man." She then turned to the host of the show, Andy Cohen -- who is openly gay -- and remarked, "I have tried to curb 'you people.'"
Cohen responded that he was "down with monogamy," but Stanger continued her attack by asking Cohen the last time he had a boyfriend.
Just because someone has not had a recent long-term relationship doesn't mean they are running around town sleeping with everyone in sight. That's an offensive statement not only to gays, but to people who decide to remain single for a variety of reasons.
Stanger also put down intelligent women and actually said that New York women should avoid multi-syllabic words if they want to have an opportunity at walking down the aisle. She said smart women need to dumb it down because men are not that bright. Is she putting women down with that statement, or men? Really, I think it's both.
She obviously gives bad advice, seeing that it hasn't worked for those she has tried to match or in her own life, and who would want to play dumb just to marry a man? That relationship would be doomed from the start.
Stanger also managed to put down Jewish people by saying that "Jewish men lie."
The rude woman needs to take a look in the mirror: Her claimed 99 percent success rate must be quite a twisted version of the truth. Time for Bravo to dump Ms. Matchmaker and her disastrous show.
