Millions of Filipino devotees defy terror warning

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Millions of Roman Catholic devotees paraded with a statue of Christ through the Philippine capital under a massive police cordon Monday after the president warned that terrorists might target the raucous annual procession.

The government did not have specific intelligence on a terrorist plot. Still, about 15,000 policemen, backed by hundreds of army troops, secured the three-mile (five-kilometer) procession route for the charred wooden Black Nazarene statue from seaside Rizal Park to a popular church in Manila's congested Quiapo district.

Air force helicopters stood by and cellphone service was blocked in procession areas to prevent its use to trigger bombs. Despite the president's warning, huge crowds of devotees wearing maroon shirts surged near the statue, believed to have healing powers.

"It's a choice between faith and fear," said Rodolfo Uy, 45, a polio victim whose 12-year-old son pushed him on a wheelchair to see the Black Nazarene. "I got nervous last night when I heard the news but my devotion was stronger."

Uy said he prayed for metal braces so he could walk and work again for his children.

President Benigno Aquino III announced in a hastily called news conference Sunday that several terrorists had been reported in the capital with plans to disrupt the procession, but that the threat was not high enough to cancel the procession and that police would work to keep it safe.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said the threat, involving possible bombings by two groups of Muslim militants from the country's volatile south, prompted police to raid several suspected terrorist hideouts in the Manila area, but without any results.

Gazmin defended Aquino's decision to announce the threat on the eve of the procession despite the absence of a specific threat, saying it underscored the president's concern for public safety and racheted up massive security preparations.

Aquino's warning sparked one of the most elaborate security deployments for an event in the capital in recent years, but Gazmin dismissed criticisms of a security overkill.

"It's OK if it can be described as overreacting," Gazmin said. "But at least we won't be sorry."

The event got under way with a morning Mass by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle at Rizal Park attended by about 3 million mostly barefoot devotees. The crowd was expected to swell to 9 million later in the day, police said.

After the Mass, where prayers were offered for victims of recent deadly floods, organizers brought the life-size Black Nazarene statue down from a stage to a carriage for a procession expected to last well into the night.

Dozens were hurt when a crowd surged forward to try to touch, kiss and dab their towels on the statue, toppling iron railings and pinning other devotees. The Red Cross said it treated more than 250 people with bruises and other minor injuries throughout the day, including some from the morning melee.

The carriage's wheels later broke, slowing the procession. Authorities said the parade might be cut short as it dragged on into the night.

In addition to hundreds of army troops, the military said it deployed 19 teams of explosive experts, 33 units with bomb-sniffing dogs, crowd-control squads and ambulances. It put a 500-member rapid reaction force and three helicopters on standby.

There were suspicions that attackers might come from two radical Muslim groups, including the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf, which is on a U.S. list of terrorist organizations for deadly bombings, kidnappings and beheadings.

The wooden statue of Christ, crowned with thorns and bearing a cross, is believed to have been brought from Mexico to Manila in 1606 by Spanish missionaries. The ship that carried it caught fire, but the charred statue survived and was named the Black Nazarene.

Some believe the statue's survival of fires and earthquakes through the centuries and intense bombings during World War II is a testament to its powers.

The Philippines is Asia's largest predominantly Roman Catholic nation.

They are not just Catholics. They are devotees of the the Black Nazarene. These devotees, mostly men, have practiced this tradition from one generation to another.. There would be grandfather, father and son that joined in this annual procession. And obviousl. ladies hardly join in the procession, if not at all.
The Black Nazaren is enshrined in the Quiapo Church for the rest of the year, that's when female devotees line up daily to climb the altar to pray and touch the image. The Black Nazarene is larger than lifesize, thus having a very imposing image that commands awe, devotion.and fear for those who would even dare to violate the image,

They treat that cross like it was the Beatles, thats the way the cross should be treated, I'd give
anything to be infected with that level of love for Christ.

It is not our "God" who separates us. It is how we interpret His love for us, and His divine plan for humankind.

If you are Christian, this is a great thing. It does not matter if there are 9 million Lutherans, Evangelicals etc. We are in an uphill battle against the threat of Securalism that has befallen most of Europe. We are in this fight together. Way to go Philippines!
      • Jen88! 4 mths ago
The threat of secularism? You cannot be serious. As a woman who lives under a government essentially run by religion I am extremely offended whenever I see an American willing to forfeit their own rights. Secular =/= bad. Secular = choice. Only fools would wish away personal freedom in order to have religion run their society in every aspect.
      • A Yahoo! User 4 mths ago
He can see it that way because of leftist's view that the Constitution provides 'freedom from religion' (it does not and could not without curtailing 'freedom of religion'). Many secularists in the US would go so far as to remove ALL traces of religion from public places. If they were in Iran, they would be demanding equal time and attention (during Ramadan, no less) for Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians and anyone else they felt was left out. They are willing to ruin your celebration to make their point. The Ayatollahs, of course, would likely have them imprisoned. Here, all we can do is file a lawsuit and hope the judge is reasonable.

But our Founding Fathers where smart enough to forbid a 'State Religion', such as the one you suffer under in Iran, since a leader that only answers to God is hard to debate. The United States was ordained by God as the union of Reason AND Faith. It would be nice if that combination would catch on in the rest of the world. Nicer still if more people here realized how lucky we are to have that seperation.

You have my prayers for your protection and the enlightenment of your leaders.

The United States was not ordained by God in any way, shape, or form. The United States was ordained by men who remembered that the religious persecution of their forefathers was at the hands of Christians.
Those who say that the United States was formed on Christian traditions are claiming that the 10 Commandments were Christian - they were Jewish - and the legal system was Christian - it was about half Roman Republic, pre-Christian. In other words, they are Wrong. Most non-Christian, Asian societies have similar laws against killing, stealing, etc. They did not get them from Christianity.
The First Amendment is taken to mean that no religion can promote their beliefs with secular, public money on secular, public property. This is perfectly fair. Government must remain secular to prevent the domination of society by aggressive religious groups.

You do realize that you can't prove your faith, right? Catholic priests have been the ones convicted of pedophilia. You are all brainwashed by things you can't prove. I hope one day you see the truth. Considering that stupid people have more kids, we are less likely to see reason as reality in the future.

Good for them...standing up for their rights in the face of barbaric animals that apparently can not tolerate freedom of choice in any matter. More people in other countries need to stand up for themselves in the face of evil and defeat them for ever and have the kind of life every human is entitled to.

Good for the millions of Filipino Roman Catholic devotees who stood up to terrorists. They were nervous but their devotion was stronger. My oldest nephew married a girl from the Philippines and she is such a wonderful person. She is the youngest of seven girls and all the girls are nurses. Her father put all the girls through college on a taxi cab company he used to own. The Filipino's are a very hard working class of people and my hat goes off to their strength of devotion.
