The mother of a coal miner killed in a Utah mine collapse says he narrowly averted death in an earlier accident at a nearby mine that killed six miners and three rescuers.
Julie Jones says her son, Elam Jones, was preparing to begin his shift at the Crandall Canyon mine in August 2007 when a collapse buried miners in the section where he was to have worked.
The 28-year-old Jones was killed Friday when a tunnel roof collapsed at the Rhino Mine about 10 miles west of his hometown of Huntington. Co-worker Dallen McFarlane was injured but has been released from a hospital.
Julie Jones is a Huntington city councilwoman. She says her son was proud to be a coal miner and didn't view his job as particularly dangerous.
