    Minister: Mandela had minor surgery, doing well

    JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Former President Nelson Mandela underwent minor surgery to determine the cause of a stomach complaint and the 93-year-old "is as fine as can be at his age," South Africa's defense minister said Sunday.

    Lindiwe Sisulu told reporters in Cape Town that Mandela had undergone a laparoscopy on Saturday, according to the South African Press Association.

    "It is not the kind of surgery you are thinking about. It's noninvasive, but nonetheless investigative," Sisulu was quoted as saying.

    Surgeons make an incision in the belly to insert a thin, lighted tube to look at abdominal organs during laparoscopy.

    The military took charge of Mandela's health care after he spent several days in a private hospital last year with a respiratory infection. Officials have not disclosed where he is being treated this time to protect his privacy.

    South African President Jacob Zuma released a statement Sunday saying Mandela had a good night's rest in the hospital. Zuma previously said Mandela was expected to go home Sunday or Monday.

    "He is surrounded by his family and is relaxed and comfortable. The doctors are happy with the progress he is making," Zuma said.

    "The doctors have assured us that there is nothing to worry about and that Madiba is in good health," added Zuma, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

    Mandela, a Nobel peace laureate who spent 27 years in prison for fighting racist white rule, became South Africa's first black president in 1994 and served one five-year term. He has officially retired and last appeared in public in July 2010.

    On Sunday, well-wishers prayed for Mandela at Regina Mundi church in Soweto, a former center of anti-apartheid protests and funerals.

    In 1997, Mandela spoke at the church, calling it a "battlefield between forces of democracy and those who did not hesitate to violate a place of religion with tear gas, dogs and guns."

      now you see that republicans are only trying to stand in the way of progress just to win an election with the result of keeping americans from getting jobs with weak arguments against obama who has done nothing but try to bring this country back to its greatness inspite of the republicans blocking the roads. People you need to get rid of republicans in state government and in congress from governors to the tea party house of representatives these people are nothing but pawns of the rich and are not your friends they are your enemies because they don't care about your social security or medicare or your health care they want to eliminate all these things and privatize these things giving them to the rich to destroy while making themselves even richer wake up people you don't have much time left your under attack with republican lies on top of lies

      Mandela's skill in uniting the country around the Rugby World Cup is the subject of the movie Invictus. He is played by Morgan Freeman with Matt Damon as the SA team captain. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Brilliant!

        They should make a movie about how Nelson here turned a developed nation in to another 3rd world all while making Johannesburg the murder capital of the world. He should get Times' "Man of The Year" for it.

      That's too bad. I wished that terrorist would've died a painful death. This terrorist is partially why South Africa fell from grace. It used to be a good place to live. They had one of the highest standards of living, you could live a good life there. Now it's a 3rd world sh[i]thole.

      You guys know why Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison? He coordinated the bombing of a church which killed and maimed many men, women and children. If you want to do some extracurricular reading, look up the Rivonia Trial. The Wikipedia on it paints Mandela in a positive light, so I suggest you look at other sources. He is one evil terrorist. Morally, he's worse than Osama Bin Laden was.
