Minkoff spies sophisticated-grunge style in space
NEW YORK (AP) — Rebecca Minkoff named all the colors for her fall collection after planets and other spacey things, but the clothes at New York Fashion Week were grounded in separates that largely could be absorbed into an existing wardrobe.
A lot of the buzz Friday at the Lincoln Center tents, however, was about the blizzard outside, not that the snow deterred most editors, retailers, stylists and bloggers as they slogged from show to show, some in sky-high heels and chunky platform boots. And fabulous furry hats!
The first model on Minkoff's runway likely wasn't headed outside in her winter-white (dubbed "Saturn"-colored) leather moto-cross jacket and green, slim Bermuda shorts. The "Eclipse" duffel coat in caramel-colored leather might have fared better.
Others wore skinny striped pants paired with cropped leather jackets, and tweed coats over dresses.
Minkoff put a twist on the colorblocking trend that has been around now a few seasons by mixing chunks of different textures instead of contrasting hues. That technique was also seen on the runways of Jason Wu and Nicole Miller.
Minkoff's soft-line exaggerated shoulder, instead of the aggressive ones that were so popular on the runways a few years ago (and in the 1980s), also turned up elsewhere.
The collection "embarks on a voyage to the future, marrying modern, spacesuit-like construction details and a new sophisticated grunge attitude," Minkoff wrote in her notes.
