MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge has sentenced a Minneapolis man to three years in prison for briefly joining a terrorist group in Somalia.
U.S. District Judge Michael Davis told Abdifatah Yusuf Isse on Tuesday that he was giving him a break for cooperating with the government's investigation, and for escaping from a terrorist training camp after spending six days there in 2007.
Isse pleaded guilty in 2009 to one count of providing material support to a terrorist organization. He had faced a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Three other men convicted in the government's investigation into recruiting for the group al-Shabab in Somalia are scheduled to be sentenced in federal court in Minneapolis on Tuesday.
Authorities say that since 2007, more than 20 young men left Minnesota to join al-Shabab.
