Minnesota a 'Tossup' for GOP Candidates

When former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty was campaigning for the Republican nomination, he frequently joked about hailing from the state that elected liberal icons such as Eugene McCarthy, Hubert Humphrey -- and here comes the punch line -- Al Franken, the comic-turned-senator.

But running alongside the state’s progressive streak is a conservative insurgency that is personified by Pawlenty’s one-time rival for the White House, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and that helped the GOP in 2010 take over both chambers of the Minnesota legislature for the first time in nearly four decades.

The heavy influence of the conservative and tea party movements make Minnesota’s caucus on Tuesday one of Newt Gingrich’s best and possibly only hope for an outright win in the month of February, which mostly features contests in states favoring Mitt Romney. Gingrich allies point to exit polls in Florida, where he lost badly to Romney but siphoned support from the most conservative voters, the strongest tea party supporters and voters who consider abortion the most important issue.

Still, Romney is riding momentum from winning Florida and Saturday’s caucus in Nevada as well as endorsements from two prominent Minnesota Republicans, Pawlenty and former Sen. Norm Coleman, while Rep. Ron Paul boasts a well-organized campaign and has visited the state consistently. These intangibles, along with a low turnout -- less than 63,000 voters participated in the 2008 Republican caucus – make the results hard to predict.

“I think we are likely to see all four candidates relatively close together,’’ said Brian McClung, a former top aide to Pawlenty who is supporting Romney. “I don’t think anyone is likely to have a breakout victory. I’d call it a tossup.’’

Romney won here with 41 percent of the vote in 2008. The Minnesota caucus is nothing more than a straw poll, because delegates are officially chosen at party conventions in April and May. But a Gingrich victory would have symbolic importance by demonstrating that his victory in South Carolina was not a fluke and that the former Georgia congressman can win outside the south. Still, Gingrich allies insist doesn’t need to come in first in a contest in order to campaign through Super Tuesday on March 6 and beyond.

“Minnesota is one of those symbolically important states, because at this point people are looking for signals as to how long this race will go on,’’ said Larry Jacobs, a political science professor at the University of Minnesota. “This is not necessarily friendly territory for Romney. It’s a place Paul or Gingrich could do well, but Paul has a much bigger presence here and could be the big surprise.’’

Gingrich could be hamstrung by his lack of campaign organization in Minnesota and competition from Rick Santorum, who is courting the same conservative voters. A super PAC backed by Santorum allies called the Red White and Blue Fund is airing a television ad in Minnesota that lumps Gingrich and Romney with President Obama and calls Santorum “the only proven conservative.’’

“Having two conservatives in the race does split the vote and provides an advantage for Gov. Romney,’’ said Robert Walker, a Washington lobbyist advising Gingrich. “That’s a concern for the party going forward.’’

Santorum campaigned in Minnesota on Sunday for the second time in a week, while Paul and Gingrich were scheduled to visit on Monday, the day before the caucus. Colorado and Missouri also vote Tuesday.

God personally tells half the GOP field to run for president and is making the mormon win. What is he up to?

God told Cain, Santorum, Gingrich, Bachmann, and Pawlenty to run. I guess God likes people to run. Maybe they should buy a treadmill.

Because he has a business background and our country needs someone with some financial sense, instead of someone who speaks well to crowds, that includes Obama and Newt.

Tossup my #$%$ Most people are catching onto the fact that Ron Paul dominates the real world while the media and tweaked polls suggest otherwise.

If Santorum had a ounce of "Common Sense", he'd get out of this race. Santorum, you keep saying your the "Only True Conservative", your not even close to bringing us "Conservatives to your side. I see you bringing more division across our country by what your Policies would be, we don't need that, we have enough already. My view is, your far more wrong than all of the other candidates put together. God Bless.

Santorum is leading in some polls in some states and could have a better February than Gingrich or Paul. If he can establish himself as 2nd to Romney, Gingrich might be drained of support which would then boost Santorum. GIngrich is positioning himself as the bad loser candidate.

Stay in win or lose. Keep it a four man race and deny an "easy" nomination for Romney at the convention.

More than anything, Rich Boy in a Preppie Sweater Vest wants to erase the Arlen Specter humiliation from his mind. Rick is hoping he can regain some self- respect if only he can just hang in there till the convention and be acknowledged as relevant somehow. The wealthy have their pride?

Publicly, he's proclaimed himself as the Protector of the Unborn and a nominee for Catholic sainthood. Even he doesn't believe that one. But he knows his Religious Right political marks well and is playing it for everything it's worth. Hypocrite, thy name is Santorum. Looking out for himself and his legacy.

Rick needs to get back to running the family Medicaid/Medicare healthcare subsidy machine which he's exceptionally good at along with lobbying for other conservative non-profits who bilk the Religious Right and the tax payer.

The outcome depends entirely on whether or not the Minnesota GOP is as crooked as its counterparts in Iowa and Nevada are. If you understand anything at all about the caucus process then you should know that there is no way that Newt Gingrich went into Nevada one week before the caucus with absolutely NO organization on the ground and beat Ron Paul who had a super organization in place there since 2008, was drawing SRO crowds at all his rallies and won 58% of the vote in the only caucus that got significant live TV coverage in Clark County. It is highly significant that the original votes counted publicly in the caucuses in Clark county were NEVER announced before the county party apparatchiks decided to go behind closed doors for TWO DAYS "to get it right" which I assume means getting the outcome they desired, not the actual count, "right". Leaving a series of GOP officials resigning (or being fired) from Iowa to Nevada in the wake of all these "voter irregularities" does not sufficiently compensate for such willful abuse of our political system on this scale. Maybe we should start acting like the 3rd world country we are rapidly becoming and start asking for an international team of neutral observers to come in and monitor our elections to insure there are not irregularities or voter fraud. The scary part is that fraud is virtually impossible to detect with voting machines, so if we are seeing irregularities with this frequency in the caucus states, one can only imagine what may be happening in the direct election states.

So true! I wish people would wake up to what is happening and do something to save the political system in our nation. I am thoroughly devastated by what happened here. So obvious. Did they think all the Super Bowl hype would cover their tracks?

does it matter if its a toss up? the GOP heads will do the same as they did in Nevada, the votes will be.... adjusted accordingly. the media will do a blackout on the coverage again. honest GOP officials will resign just before the... "adjustment" just like Nevada. wait until the voter machines are used, then it will truly be....."honest" Every vote counts as long as its for the favored candidate.

Ron Paul 26%, Gingrich 24%, Santorum 12%, Romney 2%, Ren and Stimpy 36%.
      • Mike 3 mths ago
you missed a set of numbers, you need to list the AFTER THE COUNT numbers, Romney will be first RP 2nd newt 3rd santorum 4th. Anyone with common sense knows the GOP will make sure the votes are counted fairly for what the american people NEED since we can't decide on our own.

This is all so absurd. We have become a nation of herd-followers. The Bilderberg's could run a ham sandwich for President and the thumb-suckers vote for it, so much in a trance are they.

Has it dawned on any of you thumb-suckers that the only thing that's changed over the past 50-odd years, no matter which party is in power, is that things have gotten worse? Has the thought crossed your minds that perhaps "both" parties are really working for the same people, (hint: not us) and not for our benefit? Have you noticed that your media and government purposely lies to you? That maybe your thoughts are not your own?

Apparently not. Apparently many of you believe the putrid pundits of propaganda and the serial liars, that they are told to tell us who should be our presidents. Forget that Obama, Romney or Gingrich are serial liars. Forget that they've taken every side of every issue at some time in their past. Forget that no matter what they promised, those promises were broken. Forget the Wall St. money that backs them. Forget your money buys less and less. Forget the Cayman Island and Swiss bank accounts. Forget seeing a birth-certificate, or how someone gets a Conn. SS# without ever having lived there. Forget the ethics violations. Forget the lobbyists. Forget the wars. Forget Fast & Furious. Forget 9/11. Forget Gitmo. Forget the TSA. Forget your freedoms have gradually been taken away. Forget all the lies. Just keep believing what the Corporate Owned News Networks(CONN) keeps telling you. Just keep cheering for the people that are looking to bury you. Just keep sucking your thumbs.

Ron Paul doesn't have to do back and explain to us that he "misspoke." Why? Because he simply tells the truth. And for that he gets crucified by the corrupt establishment. And the truth is that our country has long ago been taken over from within by a cabal of criminally elite families through their banking institutions, and through their infiltration of our military, and their ownership of 95% of everything we hear, read and see. Pres. Kennedy referred to them as being The Shadow Government, in a speech known as the "Speech that got Kennedy Killed." Pres. Eisenhower referred to them as the "vast Military Industrial Complex." (MIC) They are real and they are extremely detrimental too our health. And they will do anything and everything not to have the truth be told. And as powerful as they are they are deadly afraid of one small, wily, tenacious Congressman from Texas because he's putting a huge spotlight on how corrupted these cretins have made our once proud Republic.

      H. L. Mechlem once wrote that "Americans love liars and hates truth tellers ...,". I would wish to believe him wrong. But my mind cannot deny what my eyes see. There will come a time when the lies will no longer be able to sustain the corrupt system and it will collapse upon itself, upon us. We are at that time in history. We do not have another four-years of lies in us. If we don't get it right now and defy the corrupt system, and turn a deaf-ear to their lies and put Ron Paul in office now, well, you can start counting the days, because it won't be long before we turn from being a soft-tyranny into a hard one.

This is not 'fear-mongering." This is the truth. Like it or not.

Now I no I'll get alot of replies about this next statement by the "Younger Voter's", Ron Paul has no chance at becoming President. But it's not about that is it Ron, it's about "Spreading The Word" of indifference to the U.S.A.'s Policies. Your trying to get "Air Time" to have your say in these matter's. The "Younger Conservatives" are on your side for a very good reason, they don't want to die or see their friend's, family, age group die. Now that's your "Main Selling Point Of Support" PERIOD. Your idea's on the "Federal Reserve/Gold Standard" are very good for our country I think, have to give you a "High 5" for that. God Bless.

After the voter fraud not letting people in to vote because they where not Jewish, and the recount that took TWO DAYS because someone unacceptable was at 57% instead of the favored candidate for that county. after a Nevada GOP official resigned just before the recount (in protest?) I"M SURE THAT THEY CAN FIGURE OUT A WAY TO MAKE SURE THE RIGHT PERSON WINS.
