Mipcom: ‘Nightcrawler’-Inspired Reality Show ‘XRC’ Gets Second Season, Spinoff

XRC” (Extreme Reality Clips), infotainment at its most intense, is a global hit for Venezuela’s Cisneros Media Distribution, which has ordered a second season and spinoff.

Inspired by helmer-scribe Dan Gilroy’s crime drama feature “Nightcrawler,” which earned him a 2014 Best Screenplay Oscar nom and critical acclaim for lead Jake Gyllenhaal, the co-production with RMG News is a hit in Asia, Africa and the Americas, including the U.S., where it airs on Univision sister network UniMas. Ben Silverman’s Electus has clinched exclusive rep rights to the reality series for Europe and Oz.

“This powerful series, comprised of real news footage that is completely shocking and electrifying, has audiences glued to the screen, not wanting to miss any of its intriguing scenes,” said Marcello Coltro, EVP of content distribution at Cisneros Media, who has ordered another 26 episodes from producer RMG News.

Led by company co-founders/cameramen/brothers Marc, Howard and Austin Raishbrook, RMG News’ nighttime ambulance-chasing exploits spurred the making of “Nightcrawler.”

“It was great to have the opportunity to work alongside Jake, Bill, Riz and Gilroy on the film ‘Nightcrawler,’ … have them come to us for advice, and see a relatively unknown profession come to life on the big screen,” said Marc Raishbrook.

The 78 30-minute episode series is currently available in both English and Spanish, but narration is adaptable to any language.

“XRC” was acquired for Asia by the Discovery Channel; Sony MAX and SET in Africa; and various networks in Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, Chile and Paraguay.
