Mississippi tips scale as nation's fattest state

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rural Mississippi is the country's fattest state for the seventh year in a row, according to an annual obesity report issued Thursday. Colorado, a playground for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, is the nation's thinnest.

The report by two public health groups has again delivered bad news: The nation is getting bigger and bigger every year. And looking at state-by-state statistics over the last 15 years, the groups found exponential waistline growth — Colorado, with 19.8 percent of adults considered obese according to 2010 data, would have been the nation's fattest state in 1995.

"When you look at it year by year, the changes are incremental," says Jeffrey Levi, executive director of the Trust for America's Health, which writes the report with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "When you look at it by a generation you see how we got into this problem."

The study says a dozen states topped 30 percent obesity in 2010, most of them in the South. Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana were close behind Mississippi. Just five years ago, in 2006, Mississippi was the only state above 30 percent.

Jim Marks of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation said the numbers have skyrocketed over the last couple of decades because of the growth of portion sizes and the ready availability of unhealthy foods. Schools have ditched physical education programs and school lunches have gotten less healthy.

No state decreased its level of obesity, which is defined as a body mass index of 30 or more. The body mass index is a measurement based on a calculation using a person's weight and height. A person who is 5 feet 5 inches and weighs 150 pounds would have a body mass index of 25, for example, but if that person weighed 180 pounds the BMI would be 30.

Although body mass index isn't always the best indicator for someone with a lot of muscle, such as an athlete, it is considered the best way to measure the general population. The authors of the study say it allows them to measure large numbers of people because those surveyed can easily provide their height and weight.

There was a bit of good news in the report: Sixteen states reported increases in their obesity rates, down from 28 states that reported increases last year. Levi says those increases have been gradually slowing, most likely due to greater public awareness of health issues and government attempts to give schools and shoppers better access to healthier foods.

"We're leveling off to some degree at an unacceptably high level," Levi said.

First lady Michelle Obama has tackled the issue with her "Let's Move" campaign, pushing for better school lunches, more access to fruits and vegetables and more physical activity. And Congress last year passed a new law requiring school lunches to be healthier. Republicans in Congress have pushed back somewhat against some of those programs, however, saying a rewrite of school lunch rules is too costly and questioning an Obama administration effort to curb junk food marketing aimed at children.

As in previous years, the study showed that racial and ethnic minorities, along with those who have less education and make less money, have the highest obesity rates. Adult obesity rates for African-Americans topped 40 percent in 15 states, while whites topped 30 percent in only four states. About a third of adults who did not graduate from high school are obese; about a fifth of those who graduated from college are considered obese.

Dr. Mary Currier, Mississippi's state health officer, says her state has struggled to drop its No. 1 status and it has been challenging because much of the state is poor and rural.

"We live in an area of the country where eating is one of the things we do, and we eat a lot of fried foods," she said. "Trying to change that culture is pretty difficult."

She says the state has had some success by making school lunches healthier, taking high-calorie foods and drinks out of school vending machines and trying to find more low-cost exercise facilities for residents of rural areas.

"It is frustrating, but we've had some progress," Currier said. "We just have to continue to work at this. It's not something that's going to change overnight."

Isn't Colorado one of the whitest states also? Obesity is mostly genetic. Blaming people is like blaming people for their height. Totally mean and pointless.

try to lower the cost of health foods, and increasing the cost of junk food...

when the USFDA caused manufactures of diet products containing PPA to be removed from the market is when obesity rates began to climb, about 10 years ago. Obesity has increased as a result of governmental bias.

Anybody who, in 2011, doesn't know that big portions and fried foods make you fat, deserves all their problems. Natural selection...it's worked for millions of years. Let people overeat, smoke, drink, ride motorcycles without helmets, whatever, it's a free country. Just don't help or pay for them with my tax dollars. It's a win-win: they get to do what they want (and choose!) without being hassled, I get to keep my tax dollars, and they will pass on fewer of their stupid genes. Problem solved.

Actually it was natural selection that enables these people to get so fat. Those who could store food as fat in good time were more likely to survive and pass on their genes. That aside I agree with everything.

The South has a knack for taking reasonably healthy foods, and making them unhealthy by deep-frying them. Everything from tomatoes and pickles to turkey.
      • Red 10 mths ago
FYI: a deep fried turkey is less fattening, because it doesn't "sit" in the fat while it cooks. It is also a higher temperature, so more of the fat drips off! :-D

even fried frog legs. Which are delicious, by the way.

I live in Mississippi for a long time (grew up there), and I can tell you first hand that sure, fried foods play a significant role in the Mississippi obesity epidemic, but another, perhaps even larger, contributor is the fact that healthier, nutrient-rich foods cost significantly more than the calorie rich crap that's so readily available and CHEAP.

When you are trying to see how you are going to make it until the end of the week or end of the month, what are you going to reach for? Will it be five packs of Ramen noodles or a banana? Take a moment and examine the obesity statistics for each state, then look at poverty levels. There is a sad and disturbing correlation between the two.

We are subsidizing the food sectors with the best lobbiests, not the ones that are most healthy and difficult to afford. :(

Someone could eat just one pack of Ramen noodles in lieu of a banana instead of five packs. It cost less to eat less. If poverty was the problem then poor people would be starving.
      • Duane 10 mths ago
There are a lot of reasons for poverty. But perhaps one of the biggest reason is that people who are poor lack discipline and self restraint. People become wealthier by foregoing current consumption. You stay poor by spending everything you make. Obesity and poverty are very similar. Saving that little extra money every week instead of spending it is like not taking that extra slice of chocolate cake. Self discipline and self restraint will make you wealthier and thinner.

Why don't you try budgeting? If you are obese and chronically don't have enough food money to make it through the week/month that suggests that you are gorging on garbage at the beginnning of the week/month and that's why your money isn't lasting.

I live in a neighborhood where almost everyone is on food stamps. Some people budget and don't run out of food. Others fill their cart with name-brand sodas and snacky cakes at the beginning of the month and then starve for the last week of the month.

Fast Food is expensive. Preparing simple meals at home, stick to the basics (fish, chicken, eggs, potatoes, milk, etc..). Tomato's, lettuce, herbs are all easy to grow and you don't need a yard you can grow most in pots. Drink water, flavor with lemon. Walk instead of drive whenever possible. You will live much cheaper than you thought possible - just give it a try.
      • Diamond Dave 10 mths ago
Everything you said is true. I live in WV, where the people are all fatties, and the reason to not eat healthy here: Healthy food is too expensive. I never quite understood that.
    • Skeptical  •  10 mths ago
I moved to Mississippi. These folks live like they have for generations. Manual labor jobs and fried foods. Why is their weigh changing? Could it GMO grains and over processed food
    • Nitsua Saxet  •  10 mths ago
what do these states have in common?
    • Joylynn  •  10 mths ago
You can't use food stamps at McDonalds so I am sick of the argument that poor people are fat because junk food is cheaper.

BMI is so retarded. Anyone who lifts anything heavier than themselves will be considered obese by this scale. Where I cut to 12% the BMI chart has me at 30%. Not only is it dumb to use this as a measuring standard, but there are TONS of jobs and Insurance that go by this. You can be at a low BMI and still be "penalized" as an obese person.

In related news, Mississippi was the only state where the life expectancy has decreased. It is not a coincidence.

There is something wrong with the reflex to think this is some unmet government need.... people are in charge of their own life and if they want to be lard-butts it is their business and only their business..

We have entirely too many people looking for excuses to create make-work projects in the form of government programs populated by people who, ultimately, end up having a pecuniary interest in making sure the problem never goes away.

They always end up in bloated programs that alternate between pretending they are some great help.... and then seeking an excuse to expand their program. They are trapped in the schizophrenic 'place' where they lose their jobs if they succeed.... so, of course, they show as little progress as possible for as long as they can milk the program for employment for as long as possible.

The results are.....flawed results. Where is the government going with this? Soon, the government will make the schools responsible for student's BMI. It will be reported on their report cards. Additionally, this will be tied into government funding....See where this is going? If you do not believe me, research 'schools becoming responsible for student BMI."
