Missouri woman found fused to recliner in home

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A suburban Kansas City woman was left sitting in a vinyl recliner for so long that her skin had fused to the chair and she had to be pried out to be taken to a hospital after suffering an apparent stroke, authorities said.

Carol F. Brown's adult son told a state official he had left his 74-year-old mother in the chair for five days without helping her get up to use the bathroom or bathe because he was honoring her wishes to die in her Independence home, according to court documents that described the woman as a "rotting corpse that was still breathing." Brown later died.

"It is an incredible story to me," Independence police spokesman Tom Gentry said Wednesday.

Police were contacted after Brown was taken to a hospital Oct. 27 and found to have a maggot infestation inside an open wound around her ankle, according to the court documents that said Brown's home was "filthy with a heavy smell of bodily fluids and feces."

Brown's son, James Owens, told an official with the Missouri Division of Senior and Disability Services that his mother had been in the chair since Oct. 23 and that he was honoring her wishes to be left to die, the documents said.

Owens, who the documents said had started the application process to gain state aid to be his mother's caretaker, said he did give the woman tomato and chicken noodle soup.

No working telephone listing for a James Owens could be found Wednesday and a number listed under Brown's name rang unanswered.

Police who searched Brown's home took prescription drug bottles and pills, a section of the recliner and a soiled towel, court records show.

Jackson County prosecutor's office spokesman Mike Mansur said no decision will be made about possible charges until the medical examiner rules on Brown's cause of death.

"I've heard it could take some time," Mansur said. "I don't yet know how quickly it will come."

My grandmother died of cancer at home in accordance to her wishes. We brought hospice in to help change and bathe her, and she was surrounded 24/7 by loving family members committed to maintaining her dignity and comfort. This poor lady was left to suffer and rot in her own waste, eaten alive by maggots. I doubt very much that she WANTED to die like that. This case isn't about the right to die according to one's wishes. It's about elder abuse, pure and simple. I wouldn't allow a dog to die like that. The son was probably living off her money. I hope they throw the book at him.

Maggots will not eat live flesh.
      • snow cat 6 mths ago
Agreed, the tissue has to be dead but the actual person can be alive.
      • Belle Macabre 6 mths ago
Some species do eat living tissue. Please look up maggot in an encyclopedia.

Regardless of the fact the woman wished to die, you can honor her wishes and still let her have her dignity. How can you sit there and watch your own mother sit in her bodily fluids, feces, have open sores with maggots crawling in them? Your own mother? How absolutely horrible.

My mother was in bed for 7 months before she died. She was 5'6" and I, her daughter, am not 5' tall, but we worked out methods so that I could bathe her, roll her over, sit her up, change her and help her eat. It was just she and I and she asked not to be put in a home, which I would not have done anyway. It was only in the last week that she went back into the hospital, with an infection that could not be cured, and died there in a coma. If you truly love someone you will move Heaven and earth to give them the very best treatment and care that you can.

Mamasita- IMO, there is no excuse to let any living creature suffer like that. Ever.

I think the whole world is heading to hell, frankly......most of the news these days makes me want to puke, too. It's either stories like this, or vapid stories about celebrities doing dumb stuff.

This is what his mother wanted? I would have found a quicker way to die than fusing to a chair and being eaten by maggots. Dr, Kavorkian was more humane.

fizh, racist much? what does race even have to do with this article or thread? not only are you a racist, but you're an idiot, too.
      • Stewart 6 mths ago
Agree T....people like FIZH are the reason we have "Race" problems trying to tie race into anything...wait i bet we the white race owe him something because his past relatives were sold to slavery ....by other black people? Give me a break! so tired of hearing that stupid line!

Maybe she wanted maggots and chair fusion.
    • Donna  •  Baton Rouge, United States  •  6 mths ago
EEEEEEWWWWWWW!!!!! Why didn't he call hospice in, she could have died comfortably at home per her wishes with good nursing and physical care, at NO cost to the family as medicare covers it 100%. People need to know about this program. "It"s the only way to go."

Let's see... skin fused to a recliner in five days? It would take a hell of alot longer than that. She was in that recliner for weeks if not months.

My mother was in a wheelchair for 16 years. My dad and I cared for her until the day she died. She never had bedsores or any afflictions while in our care, but a month before she died she stayed a week in the hospital and she came back home with bedsores. Hospitals and nursing homes will never care for people the way a family could. But most people are too lazy and selfish to care for others so it's the only option. This man should be sent to jail and charged with manslaughter. She may have already been dying, but treating her this way hurried the process along. My mom asked us to let her die as well. We did, but not by neglecting her and leaving her in her own mess, we made her eat and take her meds, but we didn't allow life support. She died a few weeks after making that request.

Honoring a parent's final wishes to die at home is commendable .... HOWEVER .... the son should have cared for her properly and not let her sit in a chair (in filth!) to rot. We brought our Mom home from the hospital to abide by her wishes of not wanting to die in a hospital, but we had nursing care and hospice and allowed her to die with dignity in a clean environment with loved ones around her.

I am the only caregiver for my mother who has ALZ. She is now bed ridden has not spoken for more than 5 years. I have to do everything for her and I do it without hesitation. She has a living will that she will not be given a feeding tube or put on life support. I know that if she could talk she would tell me she does not want to live like this but I care for her because that is the right thing to do. Leaving her to rot and then saying that it was her wish is #$%$

Were there no neighbors, family, friends, ANYONE that knew this lady? This is a story from the Dark Ages of ignorance, idiocy, and lunacy!
    • QueenBee  •  6 mths ago
This dear woman gave him life, cared for him, and raised him No matter what her "wishes" were, this POS son of hers could have kept her clean, fed, and comfortable. If it was too much for him to handle then he should have gotten some real help. How horrible.

The decision-making surrounding the care of dying family member is incredibly complicated and heart-wrenching. However, I do believe that even if they want to profess a desire to die, it's still the responsibility of caregivers to insure they take their medicine, assist in cleaning their bodies, and change their bedsheets. It's just common, moral, and ethical sense.

We are currently providing care for my 88 yr old father who has Alzheimer's disease. It is very hard, but our circumstances allow us to provide family care rather than nursing home care. My daughter is a nurse in a nursing home and says we should do it as long as we can, but adds that most of her patients come from families who's circumstances simply cannot provide care...it has nothing to do with laziness. But the bottom line is this: Treat elders with dignity and respect because it is the right thing to do, and I know my father (because of all the great things he did for all of us and others) deserves it.
