    Should Mitt Romney stop debating?

With his GOP rivals determined to use the debates to attack the undisputed frontrunner, staying in the mix may do Mitt more harm than good

GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney will clash with his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination once again on Thursday, in South Carolina's second debate ahead of its Saturday primary. But Romney has yet to sign on for the two debates after that, to be held next week in Florida. Enough is enough, suggests Romney strategist Stuart Stevens: "There have been too many of these," he said after Monday's forum, in which Mitt's GOP rivals fiercely attacked him, and Romney gave what was branded as an "intelligence-insultingly bad" performance. With a commanding poll lead, should Romney just play it safe and bow out of future debates?

Romney might be wise to quit debating: "The debates have basically become a contest over which not-Romney candidate can draw the most blood from the frontrunner," says Alana Goodman at Commentary. That gives other candidates "a chance to try to knock him down a peg. But there's not much of a benefit there for Romney." Floridians might feel snubbed if Romney sits out the next debates, but "if voters are just as tired of [the forums] as Romney is, then it might not make a difference."
"Will Romney unilaterally end the debates?"

But Romney can't quit if the others keep debating: Romney "might not like getting beat up on stage," says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air, "but at least he's there to defend himself." He can't afford to simply step out of the spotlight and let his rivals gang up on him, turning the debates into free anti-Romney commercials. As long as Romney's rivals keep showing up, he has to be there to push back.
    "Romney wavering on Florida debates?"

And Mitt shouldn't count his chickens yet: Romney must figure that with his huge polling lead in Florida, he "can afford to coast," says Ace of Spades. "The problem with that rationale is that the field may not be five-strong when he gets to Florida. Perry or Gingrich or Santorum may drop out by then, and the remaining candidates will get a bump from that." If Romney skips debates, he'll be giving a single anti-Romney candidate a prime opportunity to break away from the shrinking pack.

If all the debaters are speaking the truth there is no reason for any candidates to step away from the debates. If someone walks away, they should not be a candidate. Like Harry Truman said, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen."

      When did he start debating?

Let a couple of backwards States pick who we have to choose from? Why have an election if we just get to go with whoever Iowa and South Carolina says our candidate is?
We need the debates, but we need to hear details of their ideas from the runners, not Just "I'm not Obama", or "we need to repeal Obamacare". Right now they are all the same, all sound bites and no solutions. Lets hear some new ideas and plans from the party, the old ones just won't fly when people need jobs, and the Congress is locked in "do nothing mode".

I thought you knew, Its God running for the White House !!

They all need to stop debating for each and every one of them keep inserting their foot in their mouths and if they go on they will shove it in so far they will never get it out. I have never ever been as disappointed with this party as I am this time around. I would not hire a one of them to work one of my own forklifts yet we are trying to put them in the White House. Such a shame !!

agreed. It's not the philosophy of the republican party, but the morality of it's members that is the problem.

Should Romney stop debating? Hell, he never did debate; he only periodically stood on his apple box and preached his bull! Americans, do we really want a President who is worth over $200 million, and makes, in his spare time (he says, truthfully for a change, that he really doesn't work at it, in making $250,000 or more per year giving speeches)??

Innuendo, half truths and repeating the same tired mantra over and over is not debating.

Look, Mitt is a man who's been obscenely rich all his life, has never really known financial struggle, and has always been blessed with laws that favor his station in life. That's all well and good, but to expect that he would do anything other than cater to the priveleged class that he's benefitted so much from, and wealthy corporations in this country that have spent millions on republican campaigns is ludicrous. He has nothing in common with normal, average Americans. A $10,000 dollar bet? Saying that he makes a small amount from public speeches, an amout which turns out to be over $350,000? That's more than 7 times the income of the average American these days. And that's an amount Mitt considers to be "small". Do you really think he'll be a good representative for the average American with standards like that?
One problem I see with the republicans in this election cycle is that their TOP priority is to get rid Obama. The problem is that once you get rid of him, you're stuck with a guy in charge who may or may not represent the values and policies you believe in. That's why there's such a big backlash against many republicans elected in 2010, because there aren't a lot of plans or ideas that seem to make sense, or that don't ultimately tilt the playing field towards some industry or another, while taking money away from the middle class and the poor. Of course you want to beat your opponent, but you want to beat them because you have ideas and policies that people agree with, not because you can be the loudest at criticising the current administration. It's sort of like the dog that finally catches the car. Once they've caught it, they don't know quite what to do. They haven't really thought much beyond just catching it.

"The problem with that rationale is that the field may not be five-strong when he gets to Florida. Perry or Gingrich or Santorum may drop out by then, and the remaining candidates will get a bump from that." - LOL! It's a sin in the media to even mention Ron Paul directly!

Stop debating, talking, pretending to be one of us much less understand us. After all he $320,000 paid for speaking gigs was not a lot of money.

Should corporate puppet Romney stop debating? Who cares. Should he drop out definite YES..Lets get Paul in office and get some REAL change and fix some of the problems that are destroying America
    • Turk E.  •  4 mths ago
These aren't "debates". Anyone who has taken a course in Logic or Argument knows that these political "gotcha" spectacles do not come close to the definition of a "debate". Whatever they are, there have already been too many of them.
    • Sub Missive  •  4 mths ago
"With his GOP rivals determined to use the debates to attack the UNDISPUTED FRONTRUNNER..."

Undisputed by Romney maybe. There was the caucus in Iowa and the primary in NH. If I recall correctly, he really didn't win in Iowa. And last I looked, there are still many primaries to go. The only ones saying he is the frontrunner are the media and those involved with his campaign.

Should Romney stop debating? YES - and just admit he doesn't stand a chance against Obama.
