Mitt Romney’s Tax Returns, by the Numbers

The Washington Post reports presidential candidate Mitt Romney released copies of recent tax returns Tuesday. None of his income came from wages and most of it was in the form of profits derived from investments in stocks and dividends from interest earned.

Here's a look at Romney's massive tax return, by the numbers.

550: Pages of Romney's returns released to the media. He released pages from his 2010 return and a partial look at estimates for 2011. The Washington Post got an early release version of the documents the day before other media outlets.

13.9: Percent of Romney's effective tax rate he paid in 2010. The rate went up to 15.4 percent in 2011.

42.6 million: Dollars Romney and his wife earned in 2010 and 2011. The couple made $21.7 million in 2010 and $20.9 million in 2011.

7 million: Dollars the Romneys gave to charitable organizations the past two years. That includes $4.1 million to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Romney gave just more than 16 percent of his income to charities in 2010 and 2011, including about 10 percent to his church.

.006: Top percentage Romney falls into in terms of the highest earning taxpayers. NPR reports that in 2009, 8.274 taxpayers out of 140 million returns listed incomes of greater than $10 million. Since Romney's wealth was above $20 million in the past two years, he is among the highest earning Americans.

72,536: Pages the U.S. tax code is, according to CBS News. The report states Romney's tax returns included such minutiae as a $1 tax credit and a $2 taxable dividend payment. He also saw a $14 addition to his taxable income, among all of his huge amounts of wealth accumulated in the past two years.

25: Average tax rate paid by millionaires. Because Romney's income was from investments, his tax rate was lower.

3 million: Dollars Romney had in a bank account in Switzerland. He also maintained assets in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Ireland, according to the New York Times.

100,000: Dollars donated to the presidential library of George W. Bush in Dallas. It was the second-largest donation after Romney's money given to the Mormon church.

Corporate raiders are paid to destroy and pillage companies with their scorched earth actions. The victims are the employees, suppliers, creditors and hometowns of the targeted companies. Kind of like warfare against America, not exactly Presidential.

I could not agree more. God bless us all if the republican party nominates the thieft of working family paychecks! Will definately switch parties in protest. My common decency will not let me cast a vote for someone who cheats American's out of tax dollars.

Say what you will - A guy that gives almost 16% of his income - off the top - not 16% of of net after taxes - is a pretty good guy! I noticed Newt gave about 3% of his "Adjusted" Gross income.... and he's done this for virtually all of his life (even when he didn't have to).... that's a guy I can trust.

A class "war" implies two sides engaged in battle. Republicans say that Liberals are trying to start a class war. It seems to me that when a person earning multiple millions each year pays less per dollar in taxes than those in the middle class, the war has been going on for a LONG TIME and the middle class has been losing all along.

Unless you paid in 3.2 million a year in taxes your post is hypocritical at best! Its time to put up or shut up!

550 page tax return.. That's the problem with U.S. tax code..
It's too complex.. too many hidden loopholes for Romney's tax experts to find
      • Jason B 4 mths ago
Which, ironically, is what Republicans have been arguing for decades. We need to just burn the entire tax code and start over.
      • Philip 4 mths ago
he paid good money for those holes

If the republican party nominates that lying cheat I will stay home in protest then switch parties. I have been a republican for as long as I can remember. I never miss the opportunity to vote big or small. It is a right I will not cast upon a thief. His time at Bain was to make wealth not create jobs. To this day he has not provided proof of the so called 100,000 jobs he claims. He flips often.

Mr. Mitt Romney, please employ Mr. Newt Gingrich as a Historian so he can have a decent job instead of being an Influence Peddler. Tiffany will vote for you for giving them a break. hehehehehe

I'm sorry but his ten percent tithe to his church doesn't count as charity to me.... I'm sorry but that means he actually only gives 6 percent a year to worthy causes. and accounts in Switzerland and multiple ones in the caymans.. that really stinks of tax dodging... I don't care how he makes his millions he should be taxed the same 25 percent as other millionaires!

The 550 page tax return is because of 72,000 pages of laws!!! If I ever bothered to read 72,000 pages of laws I think I could even find lots of loopholes! They want it so complicated that no one could comply even if they were trying. That way they can collect more in penalties and taxes.
    • Randy  •  4 mths ago
He has a 550 page tax return, because he's making 20 million dollars a year on investments.... he must have at least 300-400 million dollars in assets generating this sort of return. I'd like to see what these invesments are...

If you never spent a day in the real world where the bulk of real Americans live, how are you ever expected to know the trials and tribulatio ns and the worries that beset their lives?
How can you develop empathy for those people way below your class?
    • Shelley  •  4 mths ago
If you are like the majority of Americans, Mitt doesn't know you or care about you and doesn't want to improve your lot in life.
He sees you as either a profit or loss on a ledger and that's no way to feel about real living and breathing, hard working Americans struggling to keep afloat.
If you are a realist don't even consider voting for someone who has never even considered walking an inch in your shoes.

Romney will say anything...he blurts out to the unemployed woman "I'll make sure you get a job!"
      Yeah right...who with Bain?
    • Shelley  •  4 mths ago
Attacking Romney/Bain is NOT an attack on capitalism. Romney is part of the northeastern Harvard-Wall Street-Washington elite. Call it crony capitalism, vulture capitalism or corporatism, it is NOT traditional free market capitalism or venture capitalism.

"Wall Street 2012" is based on bubble money and government bailouts, artificially pumping up stocks from quarter to quarter. It is run by lawyers and accountants and generic MBAs, privileged sons and daughters of old money.

Real capitalism is about manufacturing and selling things, technology, innovation, hard work, entrepreneurs taking risks, small/family business. Real capitalism is about competition, supply and demand, serving customers.

Romney never bootstrapped a business from scratch in his life. Bain was about buying and selling assets and getting a quick return for investors. Romney got the job because he was the son of a rich politician. Bain had several bailouts.

Romney is part of the same culture that brought us the Obama regime.
    • Shelley  •  4 mths ago
Willard Romney Took bailout money for Bain Failures. Opposed Bushes bailout plan in 2008
And turned around only to back Obamas bank bailouts.

Hence the name Willard Wall Street and Banks INC.

Romney's wealth is NOT an asset to help the US as he is not investing in America when he has had millions of investments and accounts in offshore tax shelters located in the lessor taxed regions like the Cayman Islands. The Swiss bank account we are told has been closed as his advisor feared it would be politically embarrassing. He eludes to that fact that tax havens such as these cost American taxpayers approximately $100 billion a year. He lives off the profit made from the hundreds of millions of dollars he raked in at Bain were due in part by laying off American workers and outsourcing their jobs to other countries.

Behind every great fortune, there is a great crime. Does this apply here?
      • Jason B 4 mths ago
Well, what's the cutoff? What amount of money, in your opinion, should constitute *proof* of criminal activity in a court of law?
      • Calvin 4 mths ago
I don't think it's a crime to help start companies like Staples and try to rescue companies that are in trouble.
      • derf 4 mths ago
The forward of the book, "The Godfather". I've used that line many times and believe that it is, for the most part, TRUE. Didn't Bush no.1 say he wanted to make taxes simple so the common person could do their own taxes every year? Seems to me, THAT NEVER HAPPENED! Politicians only tell you what YOU want to hear, then after getting elected, falls in line with what the BIG MONEY tells them to do. Politicians are lawyers whom writes these tax laws and tax loopholes for themselves and cronies, so the working person can carry the load on their backs and not the rich. Back in the 80's, people like Romney were called "corporate raiders", taking over companies, dismembering them, then sell them for a profit for themselves. Most of the company problems arose from mismanagement and the CEO's putting money in their pockets and not reinvesting in the company. They got theirs, so to hell with everyone else. Very few work for the advantage of the workers, which were, most of the time, lost their jobs. The problems we are facing today have been in the making for the last 40 years, thanks to BOTH PARTIES, and it's going to take BOTH PARTIES to get us out of this mess, if that ever can be done.

According to John Mcain in an interview with NPR----Romney had no trouble in providing Mcain's staff (23yrs.) of tax returns while he (Romney) was being vetted as a posible running mate for the '08 election. Romney's a slime ball pure and simple.
    • Scott  •  4 mths ago
Yep, 3.2 million a year and they still think he should pay more!
      • Philip 4 mths ago
I pay 35% and create jobs
      • Michael 4 mths ago
pay it ALL phlip, there's nothing stopping you!!
      • TGF 4 mths ago
Dude--come on, IT'S THE PERCENT HE PAYS! You probably pay between 25 to 30% in taxes, Romney pays half that. Are you saying it's OK for you to pay more PERCENTAGE in taxes than Romney? Why would you think that? Really? REALLY? That's what you think?

How can there be separation of church and state when a presidential candidate gives four million dollars to his church, in one year?
    • Living the dream  •  4 mths ago
Well okay then, looks like it s settled then. Romney paid his taxes as per the US code (IRS) and we all know he is rich. We also know that there is many problems with the tax code, so lets now quit blaming Romney for paying the same amount as every American (even Democrats) would pay from interest and capital gains and move on sorry you were disappointed trying to nag Romney on this issue. No issue with Romney - The issue is with IRS.
