iPad Leads Mobile Operating Systems for Visits to MobilityWorks, an Industry Leading Provider of Handicap Adaptive Vehicles
Akron, OH (PRWEB) August 01, 2011
One of the most intriguing recent developments has been a significant increase in the number of people using mobile devices to view the MobilityWorks website. The company serves the disabled community with wheelchair vans and other adaptive driving equipment. In the past month alone, over 7% of MobilityWorks’ site visits came through the use of a mobile device. The iPad tablet computer lead all systems with 33% of the total share, followed closely by the Android operating system with 32% and the iPhone at 28%. The percentage of mobile visits in June 2011 were double that of January, only six months prior, and triple the average mobile visits per month last year. In all of 2010, only 2.5% of the website’s 200,000+ visits were through the use of a mobile device.
What was once a relatively insignificant number in terms of total visits can no longer be ignored — not even by the smallest company. If the trend continues, nearly a quarter of all MobilityWorks’ website visitors will come via mobile applications in only a few short years. That should be cause for concern if your website was developed more than a year ago or hasn’t had any major coding updates for several years.
“Marketers have to start thinking more about how they are presenting their information on the Internet. What may have been a great web design only a few years ago, may not work well with a mobile device” said Guy Hanford, Director of Marketing for MobilityWorks. “As an example, you have to make sure that people can find your phone number without having to click through to another page. The site needs to function on a small smartphone as well as a laptop.” Many newer sites are being designed with social media, and its legions of mobile app users, as the primary target audience. “There’s no doubt that Facebook and Twitter have impacted the growth in our mobile device visits” added Hanford. “We’ve been very active in our social media efforts.” The company publishes a Mobility Post blog with useful information about mobility issues. The blogs are automatically posted to the MobilityWorks facebook page with 1,379 fans called MobilityWorksforYou.
The iPad, which had a 16% share of MobilityWorks’ mobile device visits in 2010, wasn’t officially released until April of last year. An upgraded iPad 2 was released in March of 2011. iPad, iPod and iPhone are all owned by Apple, Inc. Android is an operating system that was purchased by Google in 2005. The Android operating platform holds a 39% market share for major smartphone manufacturers, while Apple holds a 75% market share of mobile tablets. Google recently launched its own Android tablet, which will heat up the competition, lowering prices and adding to the number of mobile device users.
iPad, iPod and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Android is a trademark of Google Inc.
