    Modest rise in Hawaii hotel occupancy for May

    HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii hotel occupancy in May saw a 1.4 percentage point increase — the smallest rise in the last 18 months, according to a report released Wednesday by a tourism industry consultant company.

    The monthly report by Hospitality Advisors LLC showed a modest increase despite a 17 percent decrease in Japanese arrivals because of the March 11 earthquake in Japan. Statewide hotel occupancy averaged 66.7 percent in May, compared with 65.3 percent in the same month last year.

    "Although the recent earthquake and tsunami continues to impact Japanese arrivals, Hawaii also continues to see pent-up demand for Hawaii travel from the U.S. mainland and Canada, which has benefited from favorable exchange rates for the past couple of years," said Joseph Toy, president and CEO of Hospitality Advisors. "The recovery still appears sustainable, although it remains somewhat uneven with Kauai and the Big Island lagging behind Oahu and Maui.

    Oahu saw the highest occupancy in May at 75.9 percent, along with the largest increase of 2.4 percentage points. A 37.3 percent increase in Canadian visitors and the American Psychiatric Convention contributed to Oahu's gain, the report said.

    Occupancy on Kauai decreased by 4.8 percentage points to 56.5 percent in May. Hotels on Maui and the Big Island saw a 1.4 percentage point increase in occupancy, to 62 percent and 49.4 percent respectively.

    May's statewide average daily room rate increased 9.6 percent from last year to $175.92. Another indicator of hotel performance — room revenue per available room — increased by 12 percent to $117.34.
