The collaborative effort was launched with two custom-created mosaic tile blends, "Brio Atomic Ranch Midcentury Palette," a warm blend of gray and white ¾” glass tiles with a pop of vibrant orange, and "Brio Atomic Ranch Blue Riff," a blend of cool-tone blue and gray vitreous glass tiles. Northern California-based modwalls, known for their modern tiles and artistic collaborations, has had a long relationship with Atomic Ranch, which has featured several of modwalls’ tiles in their articles and editorials. Modwalls Founder and Creative Director, Rebecca Lonergan, described the relationship, “We love Atomic Ranch magazine and feel that its readers are ‘our people’. We advertise regularly in the publication and look forward to the arrival of each edition for the delightful photos and articles, and inspirational mid-century interior design ideas and stories.”
In early 2011 Rebecca suggested that Atomic Ranch create a new retro-inspired mosaic glass tile blend for modwalls. Modwalls gave the magazine’s editors full access to the tile site’s Brio Custom Tile Blending Tool and let the mid-century experts have full creative license.
“When modwalls invited us to develop a custom Atomic Ranch blend for their Brio glass tile line, we jumped right in—who doesn’t want to play around with a tool like the Custom Tile Blender,” said editor Michelle Gringeri-Brown. “We encourage our readers to think in terms of finishes that look like they could have been original to their ranch houses. The 3/4” glass mosaic is a good contemporary interpretation of the ceramic mosaic tile popular in the ‘60s.”
For ‘Midcentury Palette,’ Atomic Ranch considered the colors you see driving through an Eichler neighborhood—taupe, gray, white, and a blast of Eichler orange was added for fun. The ‘Blue Riff’ blend was modeled after a Scrabble board, and Michelle added that the blend “Would be a good cool-color choice for Roman tubs and shower stalls.”
Michelle continued, “We went through three rounds of design trials in our publishing office, with the staff voting on and tweaking their favorite mixes. When we sent the final grouted ‘hero’ tiles to Nancy Anderson, our L.A. art director who was laying out the featurette on modwalls, she wished she’d had them for her own kitchen makeover. ‘I thought the orange gave it punch without being overwhelming, and love the palette in general,’ she emailed us.”
Modwalls is thrilled by the resulting tile blends, as well as the relationship. Rebecca affirmed, “We love to promote good design through creative partnerships; this collaboration has been enjoyable and exciting and we plan to keep working with other designers and artists in the future so that we can always offer our customers the freshest tile products on the market.”
