Mojang and others join reddit for Jan. 18 blackout, Wikipedia indecisive

The climax is building as the January 24 senate debate for SOPA nears. The reddit community earlier this week organized a protest blackout happening next Wednesday, and now more website are jumping on the Anti-SOPA blackout bandwagon. So far, the wagon has picked up Mojang, as well as Destructoid, Anonymous the Cheezburger Network and a couple others, with Wikipedia still debating whether to join.

Minecraft creator @notch confirmed in a tweet earlier today that the Mojang and Minecraft websites will go dark on January 18 in solidarity against SOPA. The AnonymousIRC account also tweeted there would no activity from the Twitter account on the blackout date, though its not clear if Anonymous will be taking more extreme action in protest. The Destructoid video game blog confirmed a blackout as well

Some more websites to jump on the blackout, which confirmed via company blogs, include the Major League Gaming network, Good Old Games (GOG.com) and Tucows. Also on board with the blackout is Cheezburger, Inc. CEO Ben Huh, who previously mobilized the Cheezburger network to boycott GoDaddy. Ben Huh tweeted that all Cheezburger sites will go dark, and he then drew attention to Wikipedia’s indecision.

Geekosystem states that a main argument connected to the reddit blackout is the lack of big players such as Google, Twitter or Facebook. The current roster of blackout websites cater to niche groups. However, Wikipedia has mulled a blackout in the past, and on Thursday in a discussion threat, Jimmy Wales put the decision on the Wikipedia community:

“I’m all in favor of it, and I think it would be great if we could act quickly to coordinate with Reddit…I think that matching what Reddit does (but in our own way of course) per the emerging consensus on how to do it, is a good idea. But that means we need to move forward quickly on a concrete proposal and vote – we don’t have the luxury of time that we usually have, in terms of negotiating with each other for weeks about what’s exactly the best possible thing to do. As I understand it, the Foundation is talking to people about how we can geolocate and guide people to their Congressperson, etc. Geoff will know about that. Our task is to decide to do it with a thumbs up / thumbs down vote.”

If Wikipedia falls in with reddit perhaps some of the other big players will follow, but time is running out.

Anonymous, now is your time to shine. I was mad at you guys for PSN, but here is your chance to do what the group is about. All these websites (cough Yahoo?) that are not showing anti support for this absolutely stupid bill, and the vibrant supporters need to be shut down for the day.

Actually Yahoo is one of the companies who are Anti-Sopa, and have been for a while. For sites like google and yahoo, the decision to do a shutdown isnt so easy, seeing as their shutting down affects THOUSANDS of businesses who rely on google's search engines and yahoo's market place and could lead to massive (if not pointless) lawsuits in the name of 'lost profits'...

If facebook blacked out for the day; then it would have people's attention.

Ron Paul has spoken out in strong opposition to SOPA. If you're supporting another candidate, you should see where they stand.

      Oh God!!
      No lol cats!!!!!

      um... pointless blackout.
Perhaps something a little more proactive than doing exactly what the bill proposes.

Interesting, a bunch of websites that don't matter to more than a handful of people are going to do a "blackout" protest. I will state right now that any site that I visit on a regular basis is blacked out on Jan 18th will never be visited by me again. If these sites and everyone else would stop stealing copyrighted materials there would not be a problem. These websites need to fight all the internet piracy that happens and then there would be no need to have regulations. Also, the internet is actually government property as it was originally created for the military.

Cool, why don't you go dig up Hitler while you are at it and bring back Nazi Germany. Look where that thinking got them, and you want to bring it here? Do you even know what the bill states is "copyrighted material"? What you just posted could easily be blocked, this article that mentions other websites could be blocked, yahoo itself could be shut down and fined. Thats why this bill is stupid. It's there so the government can tell you what it wants, anything else will be "censored" just like China.

The internet is not government property. You are so f'ing stupid I'll be happy to have you stop visiting any sights who blackout. Hey guess what: You're computer is connected to the internet (which is essentially just networked computers) so I guess the US government owns your pc).
