Will money trouble sink Newt Gingrich's campaign?

The bad news keeps coming for Newt Gingrich. Since his win in South Carolina's primary last month, the former House speaker has been trounced in five states. His campaign, which was down to its last $600,000 before Florida's Jan. 31 vote, has found it increasingly hard to raise cash in the wake of Mitt Romney's landslide win there. And now comes what could be the worst news of all: Billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, whose family has donated $11 million to the pro-Gingrich Winning Our Future super PAC, has decided to stop sending checks, according to Bloomberg. Will this make it impossible for Gingrich to mount a comeback?

Newt is finished: Sheldon Adelson "rescued Newt Gingrich's campaign in its early days," says Jaywon Choe at Business Insider. Now "he may have just buried it." With Gingrich performing poorly in state after state, Adelson has reportedly met with Mitt Romney, a clear sign he's exploring other options. Even "more alarming" for Newt is that "as money seems to be flooding out" of his camp, it appears to be flowing into his conservative rival Rick Santorum's campaign and super PAC.
"Billionaire Gingrich contributor to cut support"

Gingrich's conservative fire can save him: Gingrich can still "revive his campaign," says Tony Lee at Human Events, by reminding conservatives of the bold ideas that once pushed him to the top of the polls — an optional 15 percent flat tax, curbing the influence of liberal activist judges, and eliminating the capital gains tax.
"Gingrich will try to reset campaign at CPAC"

Newt's odds of a resurgence are getting worse: Gingrich's challenge after Florida "was to stay relevant until Super Tuesday" on March 6, says Justin Sink at The Hill. That means "raising money and solidifying his position as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney." Obviously, Santorum's wins in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri made it tougher for Newt to claim he's the Right's best bet. And without Adelson's money, he can't "match Romney in advertising." Newt will likely wind up "limping into the Super Tuesday contests."

Wait... someone thinks the problems with Newt's campaign have anything to do with money???
      • shawnee 3 mths ago
        Great point.

Probably only Newty and his minions think it's about money. He won't have to worry about it when he's up on the moon because he'll be king of the Lunar-tics!

I was going to comment that Newt himself will sink his own campaign but everybody else beat me to it. It looks like Newt is bringing everybody together. Against him.
      • CafeenMan 3 mths ago
Well, he is a uniter. :)
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
He already turned everyone against him years ago. Does this fool think that people have forgotten about his past hijinks??

Newt is a #$%$ bag. Isn't that enough to sink his campaign?
    • ROBERT  •  Wausau, Wisconsin  •  3 mths ago
Ya know what really gets me upset. This is the guy who started this type of big spending, go for the throat, no prisoner taken partisan politics. Now he is whining because it is now working against him . Disgusting!

We all know Newt's chances! But he isn't going quietly or gracefully. It isn't in his reptilian DNA. He'll hop around from venue to venue, taking cheap shots at the frontrunners, and promising voters the moon, again! We can hope for the best. He might be abducted by Moonies!
      • mimi 3 mths ago
Hopping around from venue to venue. Sorta like he did with women, huh?
      • not bubba 3 mths ago
what have the Moonies done that would deserve such punishment?

When the people have begun to turn away from a candidate, there's usually not a whole lot that can resurrect his campaign. Newts' success in South Carolina was the equivalent of
a drowning man making it to the surface for one last gulp of air before going under for good.
Even if he does manage to limp into Super Tuesday, his support among the voters has all but evaporated.

        Very well said.

When he got so mad at Romney, he sunk himself, old school Republicans were trashing him all over the press. He is not one that anybody would want to have the nuclear codes. Just too unstable and vindictive. Too thinskinned. He showed himself to be an over the hill fraud. There is nothing attractive about his personality, or his fat body. He would get mad and blow a gasket at the first Presidential crisis. People sense that and it shows in his losses. Hating Obama is not enough to get elected.

NEWT will sink Newt's campaign. People are finally starting to see him for what he is.

The real point has nothing to do with Newt....It demonstrates that money runs to the most likely winner so they can pass laws the keep the 1% in power. Pass campain laws and let Americans decide who is president so they serve us not the rich.

Newt is only in the race to increase his speaking and "historical researcher" fees.

I certainly hope so. The thought of that perv as Prez makes me want to vomit.

If Newt leaves--that's going to leave a big gap in the humor department. Everyone--send him a $1.00.

We need to put pressure on the Supreme Court to change the "corporations (and unions) are people rule." Until that happens nothing will change and "our" elected officials will be the ones who went to the highest bidder. None of the people on either side represent me, an average American struggling every day to get by. You know what I get excited about? The fact that I could afford to do the 80K mile service on my car and buy a new bedspread. And I count myself as lucky. Many Americans aren't even fortunate enough to have a car or a bed. We need to start flooding the offices of Congress and the Senate and remind them that we are their boss and that they can be fired. Maybe we need to spend a few years voting out incumbents, maybe we need to put pressure to change the "retirement plans" that government officials receive even if they only served one term. It would be like pulling the Band-Aid off an ugly wound and it's going to hurt but that's the only way it's going to heal. And I guarantee they don't give a crap about what we write on yahoo. We have to do something more. Not voting party lines would be a start. My Dad was in a union and he always voted Democrat and I never could understand that since he beliefs were Republican. But he felt that if he didn't he wouldn't be able to feed his family. What kind of country is this if an honest-working man who pours concrete from sun-up to sun-down in all kinds of weather feels like he can't feed his kids if he doesn't vote a certain way? And this was 40 years ago. No folks, we have to do something different because they won't. They have no reason to. And I bet that most of them wouldn't be caught dead in a 6-year-old car with 80K miles on it...So I'll stop my rant and start sending letters. What will you do? We are America, we have to stop letting "our" elected officials deciding what that means for us.

Gingrich, with the two faces, good Newt and bad Newt, sinks his campaign. Go back to be a pretended intellectual.
    • Mark  •  3 mths ago
No, Gingrich will sink Gingrich. He's a Master of his own demise. He got kicked out of Congress! Isn't that sufficient to make it clear he's unfit?? That is not a selling point.

If any one thinks this country is being laughed at now, elect a president named Newt and see what happens. Probably goes the same for Mitt.

Hes more concerned about the money that his new books, speaking engagements, and being hired as a "Historian" are likely to bring him.
