    More cracks found in Washington Monument

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Park Service says engineers have discovered several additional cracks in the top portion of the Washington Monument.

    The cracks were found Wednesday during a daylong inspection of the interior of the monument. A 4-foot crack was discovered Tuesday during an inspection of the exterior by helicopter, shortly after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the nation's capital.

    The monument is closed to visitors indefinitely.

    Park service spokeswoman Carol Johnson could not say how many additional cracks were found but says engineers found three or four "significant" ones.

    The park service is bringing in engineers from two firms with extensive experience investigating earthquake damage to conduct a more detailed inspection on Thursday.

    Johnson says it's likely that the additional cracks mean the monument will take longer to repair.

      Leave it as is and have people admire it from a distance until other MORE pressing problems are taken care of first.

      Thorough investigation is of very importance. Obviously top of the monument borne the most of the jerk originating from the quake.I suggest, cracks are on the surface, Foundation & super structures probably not affected.However we are waiting for investigation report of engineers.

      the washington monument is held together by gravite there is no cement between the blocks. i lived in washington d.c for a year and found out this information from one of the park rangers.

        From the Smithsoian "...exterior will be cleaned, all the joints repointed and the lightning protection system repaired. I didn't know this but I should have guessed: the structure gets struck by .... The mortar between them has been replaced at least twice. ..." Guess THAT park ranger was smoking something funny Jarman, when he/she told you that.

      the cracks have been there for years the earth quake just gave them the reason to bring it to the attention to the people to get the money to fix it since the country is broke and now they will get the money to fix these cracks without any negitive say from the tax payers bend over and take it deep people cause you know you want it deep again lol

        No. The building was just built during the 1850s-60s, and wasn't made to stand earthquakes. It was once the tallest building in the world, and they didn't have the architectural knowledge that we have today.

      I don't believe it! A quake does not make an oboilisk crack the top without causing significant damage at the base. If there are cracks then they were there previously and our tax paying dollars apparently does not go to maintaining the Washington Monument.

      it is certainly a reminder of what obama and the democrats have done to this country.
      crumbling all around us while those jacklasses try to devise more ways to fleece the productive. last thing i heard was obama trying to figure out a way to fleece people of their 401k accounts. those that greedily saved and sacrificed are cheating those that didnt save and sacrifice. its only fair. take what the greedy saved and give some of it to those that didnt or who didnt have the opportunity to save a 401k because they were living in mexico last year.

      Who surveyed the monument BEFORE the earthquake to know if cracks might already have been there? I remember the monument being closed for a long period of time for previous repairs. When was its last "check up?"

      This is really the only damage they can report from the earthquake? Quit with the hype. Yes, it was unusual and shook people up a bit, but the rest of us who have been through damaging quakes don't see the big deal.
