Developer NetherRealm Studios on Friday released a new trailer for upcoming fighting game Mortal Kombat X that focuses on story and reveals more playable characters.

In terms of story, Mortal Kombat X takes place 25 years after the events of 2011's Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm confirmed. Players will square off against Mileena (at left) and her Outworld rebel army. There are few more details, but this is the first time NetherRealm has said anything about what to expect in terms of narrative.

The trailer also confirms three new characters for Mortal Kombat X. These are listed below.

  • Jacqueline Briggs (daughter of Jax)

  • Takashi Takeda (son of Kenshi)

  • Kung Jin (descendant of Kung Lao)

In other recent Mortal Kombat X news, NetherRealm has announced that Brutalities--the hyper-violent finishing moves featured in previous games--will return for the new title. There will be more than 100 in all, and you can see a selection of them here.

The Mortal Kombat X release date is April 14 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Update: It's been brought to our attention that Mileena may not be officially confirmed as a playable character for Mortal Kombat X.
