Most US colleges not asking sexual orientation

ELMHURST, Illinois (AP) — Gary Rold didn't necessarily consider himself a pioneer when he decided that Elmhurst College would begin asking applicants about their sexual orientation.

"I thought from the recruitment standpoint we might be more proactive" in attracting gay and lesbian students, said Rold, admissions dean at the small, private liberal arts school tucked in a middle-class Chicago suburb. He also wanted to make sure the students got any help they needed. "I realized that many of them come to college feeling really isolated and alienated."

Rold's decision touched off a flurry of publicity after advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students lauded Elmhurst as the first in the nation to ask applicants about sexual orientation — an idea that has gotten little traction elsewhere. Now the question is, will other colleges follow suit?

Advocates say that besides being a recruiting tool to help diversify campuses, openly assessing a school's LGBT population would make colleges more aware of needs such as finding tolerant roommates and providing appropriate health care. And it would send a positive message to prospective students who may have faced discrimination in high school.

But officials at other colleges, especially those that are large and well-known, say they don't need to ask because they already have reputations for being diverse and inclusive, and a student's sexual orientation would have no bearing on admission. Others wonder if some schools worry about the controversy such a question might generate.

Nevertheless, the idea of asking about sexual orientation is not likely to go away.

"Colleges have a responsibility to take care of students they admit so all can succeed academically; a lot of (LGBT) youth get to campuses ... and are largely invisible," said Shane Windmeyer, executive director of the national advocacy group Campus Pride, who said asking applicants about sexual orientation should be as common as questions about race and ethnicity.

His group pushed for adding the question to The Common Application — a uniform document used by more than 450 colleges and universities, including some of the nation's most exclusive — but that group's board of directors rejected the idea earlier this year.

Schools already had other ways to signal support for LGBT students and for students to indicate their sexual orientation, said Rob Killion, executive director of The Common Application. What's more, some admissions officers and high school counselors worried the question could cause anxiety for some students, even though it would be optional.

"I think places like Elmhurst will be the vanguard," said Killion. "It will be good to get feedback from their applicants on whether the question is appealing or not. We're constantly changing as a society, so we'll see what happens."

Rold said Elmhurst, affiliated with the United Church of Christ — which officially supports same-sex marriage — will use the optional question to help increase diversity at its 2,900-student campus about 15 miles west of Chicago, to ensure it has the services LGBT students need and to consider them for scholarships.

The bottom line, he said, is to enrich the college experience for all students. A diverse environment is "the real world," he said.

The college received some complaints, including from within the conservative-leaning community and some supporters, but most feedback was positive, officials said.

Elmhurst students Ally Vertigan and Emily Ponchinskas, who is president of a campus group called Straights and Gays for Equality, say they're proud of their school.

"It's important if for the sole reason that Elmhurst is letting people know that diversity is more than just what color your skin is or what language you speak," said Vertigan, a senior majoring in religion and Spanish.

Shannon Sullivan, executive director of the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, a nonprofit that works with high school gay-straight alliances, said some colleges may be uncomfortable with the topic or afraid of offending people. "People sometimes think it's easier not to deal with it," she said.

Doris Dirks, coordinator of the Northwestern University LGBT Resource Center, said a campus advisory group has asked the private school to consider adding a sexual orientation question to its supplemental application.

"It's one of those potentially touchy issues," Dirks acknowledges, "but to my mind it's a diversity issue."

Penn State discussed whether to add the question "with some in favor and some suggesting it's not the best decision to make at this time," said Terrell Jones, vice provost for educational equity. So far, the university doesn't see the need, he said. Instead, the school touts its gay-friendly atmosphere in recruitment brochures, has a strong LGBT student resource center, "pride" ambassadors who give tours to prospective students, a scholarship for LGBT students and a presidential advisory commission on LGBT equity.

"We think we do project and provide a climate that is inclusive to all students," Jones said. "But I don't think the debate on this is over by any means."

So they want the sodomizers rooming with one another... is that the point?

So why is it newsworthy to report that most colleges are not asking personal questions that have nothing to do with their suitability for college?

Hmmm....I think it is a good thing that colleges are resisting the urge to ask personal questions that have no bearing nor relevance on an individual's suitablity for attending a college.

Why would they ask such a question? How absurd! I most assuredly would be answering, "None of your business," if anyone asks about my sex life. I refuse to answer questions about race and gender as well. When will this nation start judging people for the content of their character?

For race I put Human if I'm allowed a write in.

I have issues that 'most' don't ask. How about 'It's none of their business - PERIOD!'

You are either qualified to enter a college or university or you are not.

I am short. It is something I was born with, not a choice. I am constantly disadvantaged, both physically and socially. Sometimes people make jokes about me and make me feel bad. They are really insensitive to my needs. I can't reach the top shelf of the kitchen cabinets. I have to sit on an extra pad so I can see while I drive. I have to climb the shelves at the grocery store to reach the products I want. Studies show that I make less money than tall people and I receive fewer promotions than tall people.
I want my own category. I want special consideration. I want my own support group. I want a law that makes it illegal to say mean things about my height.

I am tall. It is something I was born with, not a choice. I am constantly disadvantaged, both physically and socially. Sometimes people make jokes about me and make me feel bad. They are really insensitive to my needs. I have to duck low hanging decorations like chandeliers. They don't make cars that fit tall people very well. I have to bend down really far to get products off the bottom shelf. Studies show that I will spend more on healthcare because of the effects of my size on my joints. Employers will have to spend more to accommodate taller employees because our ergonomic needs are different from people of average height.

I want my own category. I want special consideration. I want my own support group. I want a law that makes it illegal to say mean things about my height.

Preach on, my vertically challenged sister!

I would refuse to answer said question. What business is that of the colleges?
      • Al Bundy 7 mths ago
I would answer the question. Being gay is nothing to be ashamed about. We are out and proud.
      • losopapa 7 mths ago
it's a liberal thing ...just say you are bi sexual or gay and they will give you a scholarship and affirmitive action! (no joke)

Unless you're trying to date someone, what question is that for anybody?!?!?!

Next thing you know, Walmart's going to start asking before they let me buy shampoo.

Kinda like EOE employers that ask for your race on the application.

It would be so hot & crazy going to an all lesbian college...until those two pictures of 'Ally' and 'Emily' were attached to this story.
See, girls? That might be what you get if you decide to play with your own team.

      What on Earth??

What does sexual orientation have to do with getting into college?
    • KsDevil  •  7 mths ago
There's no need to ask. Just set up the services and let all of the students know what services are available. Also set up a system where service ideas could be requested as well as resources on how to create student-built services. Gays will seek out the services they want or need from the list. Simple. No drama. And if they want to recruit more gay students, all they have to do is put that information in their marketing tools. For administrators, they sure seem to lack the educational innovation for it.

Sounds like a poor way to boost enrollment. What's wrong with offering a good education and post-graduation success? Elmhurst, the new GLBT party school.

Just another invasive question that is no one else's business. My Dad used to get irritated by Dr. offices and hospitals when they would ask his religion: "Why," he would ask in return. "Are you planning to kill me?" I do the same. Nor are my political affiliation/non-affiliation or financial situation any one else's business. Get the hell out (and stay out) of my personal life.

It can affect "how much" medical treatment a patient may be able to undergo; i.e. some groups don't receive blood transfusions. A Jewish or Muslim patient would probably not be too keen on accepting a suggestion for a pig heart valve replacement, or a pig skin graft for a burn. The question doesn't have to do with you. It has to do with other people for whom this stuff matters. Just don't answer what doesn't pertain to you.

They should ask no questions except if the person is a US citizen or is here legally, and a back ground check for safety reasons.. That is all they should know except what the persons grades are for admittance. That is all. There is no reason to know their sex, race, age, creed, color, orientation, religion or otherwise.

If you were fair, and liberal, and non-bigoted, you'd be checking "D, all of the above" so as to not offend anyone, right? I mean, you can't really be trying to be "inclusive of all students" if you're only seeking to attract gays, can you?
      • len lauro 7 mths ago
Totally appreciate your comment and have applied the same philosophy to race but wish to state a correction: Liberals are NOT non-bigoted. (Let's forget about fair.) Liberals are so 'un-biased' that the first thing they want to know is your sexual orientation. My conservative friends were fine with 'don't ask/don't tell. Frankly, I could give a ---- about one's orientation but NO, the liberals HAVE to admit 'gays to the military' and want everyone to KNOW they're gay. What if I didn't want you to know? I have no choice? And they claim non-bias on race but impose race quotas and push welfare as well as 'single motherhood' - all means of enslaving blacks. Lower the bar for minorities creating resentment against them from other groups, furthering prejudice. And have you ever noticed that whenever a conservative politician is gay, the liberals just can't wait to 'out' him as a smear tactic? Ironic, isn't it? Just in the past 2 weeks I have seen: liberals attack Herman Cain for his race, Mitt Romney for his religion, Newt Gingrich for his divorce and Cris Cristie for his weight. This is the inclusive party?

What unbridled nonsense. I'm gay and I didn't have any problems in school. I did very well in my undergrad program at Emory (down there outside Atlanta apiece), and in my master's program here in Boulder. And I am doing very well in my PhD program here. They should not ask about anyone's sexual orientation or race. All they need are one's transcripts, one's SAT or GRE scores, VITA at the doctoral level to see what the hell you have done and managed to have published, and samples of your research and writing.

Gays don't need affirmative action. We do at least as well as heteros academically according to every empirically based study - especially at the graduate level. There is no statistically significant difference, but gays actually do a little better than heteros.

Blacks may need affirmative action, but it isn't fair to brighter students who have worked harder. If not asking any questions about sexual orientation or race means having mostly Asian and white students (and a goodly number of gays), then so be it.
    • littlebrother  •  7 mths ago
Yikes, everyone is so focused on the sexual act. I realize that the work "homoSEXual" doesn't help matters. It is NOT NOT NOT about sex. Being homosexual does NOT reveal what's happening in the bedroom. The "sexual" part of that word pertains to GENDER (boy or girl), NOT the act of sex.

I wish the word could be morphed into homoGENDERal. Feelings of attraction towards someone of your same GENDER. Enough said. What happens sexually after that is irrelevant to anyone but the consenting adults involved.

WOW, public universities are doing this? Are they that dumb? This is plainly in violation of the Equal Protection clause. I can't wait until one of these places are sued and the whole board looks like morons who didn't run admission changes by an attorney, because they are trying to save a few bucks. Yep, that $500 piece of advice it will be worth it when your school drops 50 spots in the rankings. Idiots.
