Mostly empty barn a total loss in Ellisburg fire

Jan. 9—ADAMS — A mostly empty barn is a total loss after a fire on County Route 79 in Ellisburg Tuesday afternoon, Jefferson County Deputy Fire Zone Coordinator Joseph Simpson said.

The smoke from the blaze could be seen about a mile or so away from the fire.

When officials arrived on scene, they found the barn fully engulfed, Simpson said, and they had concerns about a nearby house.

The nearby house experienced heat damage but everything else that burned was attached to the barn, Simpson said.

He said the barn was not active, and there were no animals inside. There may have been some hay stored inside.

"We wanted to protect the exposures and obviously we've got to put water on the fire to try to contain it to the building of origin," he said.

They used a ladder truck to get deeper into the building.

There were also concerns about a barn across the street that houses cattle, and there was some amber on the roof.

"It's probably a good thing we had snow on the roof," Simpson said.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately available.

Belleville, Ellisburg, Henderson, Adams, Mannsville, and Smithville fire departments responded to the scene along with South Jefferson Rescue Squad and state police.
