    Mother says W.Va. murder suspect had schizophrenia

    MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The mother of a Morgantown man suspected of killing five people and injuring two more before committing suicide says he'd long struggled with a bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

    Tammy Konchesky told the Dominion Post (http://bit.ly/p51XcK) that 22-year-old Shayne Riggleman wasn't taking his medications, but she doesn't know why he did what police allege.

    State Police won't comment on a motive but say Riggleman shot five people in a rural home near Morgantown on Monday afternoon. The victims included a woman who was six months pregnant and her 17-year-old brother, who a family friend says had just begun dating Riggleman's ex-girlfriend.

    Riggleman ran down a Pennsylvania woman and shot a West Virginia gas station attendant after the slayings, seriously injuring both, before fleeing to Kentucky and taking his own life during a police chase, authorities said.

    Konchesky wasn't answering her phone Thursday but expressed sympathy for the victims.

    "I know they are distraught. I know they have to be," she told the newspaper. "I feel shame and I feel like maybe I did this to him. I don't know. I have no clue."

    Konchesky said she last saw her son about 2 p.m. Monday, less than three hours before police say the rampage began. He'd just gotten off work from his motel job.

    Though Riggleman mentioned wanting to see a girl he'd dated, Konchesky said she thought he was going home to sleep when he left her house. When she asked if he'd be by for dinner, he told her he didn't know.

    Now, Konchesky wonders if she missed the signs.

    Riggleman loved music, but she's left to ponder the memory that he'd been singing Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" and Pink Floyd's "Don't Leave Me Now" on his last day alive.

    Riggleman had several brushes with the law over the past four years and did 14 months in a prison for young offenders after an armed robbery.

    His mother says he regretted the crime, for which he made just $2.

    "When he was leaving," she said, "he pulled out $2 and said, 'This is what I'm taking with me today. I can't get done paying for it.'"
