Nursing moms & babies will try to set a new breastfeeding record at A Mother's Haven, a maternity & baby boutique just north of Los Angeles, on Saturday, August 6th as part of The Big Latch-On, a national event to support World Breastfeeding Week.
Encino, CA (PRWEB) August 04, 2011
For the first nursing record for a single location in Berkeley, CA, 1,120 mothers breastfed simultaneously in 2002. Then in 2006, the international record for one location was set in the Philippines with 3,738 mothers. In more recent years, several coordinated international events have been held, including 9,826 breastfeeding moms at 325 sites in 16 countries in October 2010.
A Mother's Haven is proud to be part of The Big Latch-On 2011. Teresa Gonczy, owner of A Mother's Haven, says, “While we are certainly not expecting nine thousand new moms and babies to breastfeed here at our store in Encino, we're excited that we can contribute to the larger national event and help to set a new record!” Breastfeeding moms and babies can participate in The Big Latch-On Event by coming to A Mother's Haven in Encino on Saturday, August 6th. Sign-in starts at 10am, and everyone will breastfeed or 'latch-on' at 10:30am. All ages of babies, as well as family, friends, and those who support breastfeeding, are welcome to attend. For more information or directions to the event, call 818-380-3111.
World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated in more than 120 countries during the first week of August each year to raise awareness and support for breastfeeding – 2011 marks the nineteenth anniversary of World Breastfeeding Week. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) developed WBW in an effort to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding on a global level. Around the world, breastfeeding advocates focus on providing information and education about breastfeeding, as well as supporting new moms and families in the whole lactation process. The Big Latch-On Event was introduced in Portland, Oregon in 2010 by Joanne Edwards as a way to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. During the same week, Annie Brown, a La Leche League Leader from Connecticut, organized a simultaneous breastfeeding event in her home state. For 2011, they are working together and with the support of La Leche League USA to bring The Big Latch-On Event across the country.
