A water company is warning of likely traffic disruptions over the next 16 months as it starts repairs to a water main in East Sussex.

Work to replace about four miles (6.5km) of old pipe along the B2096 Battle Road, between Heathfield and Rushlake Green, began on Tuesday.

South East Water (SEW) said the majority of the work would be carried out under temporary traffic lights, but side roads would need to be closed and some diversions would be necessary.

The work is part of a £5.6m project to improve the quality of drinking water in the area.

Middle Lane in Rushlake Green was also closed on Tuesday to allow for the replacement of pipework at the same time.

SEW said access to homes and businesses within the closures would be maintained.

“This £5.6m investment into drinking water supplies in the Heathfield to Rushlake Green area is needed to improve the quality of customers’ tap water,” a spokesman said.

An East Sussex Highways spokesman said it was aware of concerns raised about the diversion route.

“We will continue to monitor the situation while work takes place, and will work with South East Water to help keep disruption to a minimum,” he said.
