Motorists In The Wrong Find Ways To Make Things Right

DEAR ABBY: "Mild-Mannered Motorist in Virginia" (Dec. 26) asked you for a hand signal to indicate "I'm sorry" to fellow drivers when he makes mistakes behind the wheel. Not long ago, I made a not-so-serious mistake that angered another driver. When I flashed a peace sign, then moved my mouth in an "I'm sorry," the person's frown changed to a smile. We then drove on with pleasant attitudes, and I tried to watch my driving more closely.

The peace sign, of course, is hand closed, forefinger and middle finger up as in a "V." I think the whole world recognizes a peace sign. It worked for me. -- FAITHFUL READER IN ARKANSAS

DEAR FAITHFUL READER: I assured "Mild-Mannered" that my helpful readers would step forward to offer suggestions for an "I'm sorry" signal. And many, like you, mentioned giving the peace sign. Offering more options, my newspaper readers comment:

DEAR ABBY: We New Yorkers have honed silent signals to a fine art. When I'm at fault in traffic or other situations where I can't apologize verbally, I make eye contact, put my hand to my chest to accuse myself, and put my hands in a prayerful gesture to ask forgiveness. This almost always defuses the situation on the spot. Add a smile and you've made a friend as well. -- LORNA, IN THE CITY

DEAR ABBY: I, too, have made boo-boos while driving and wish I could have said "I'm sorry," but the person is usually too busy shaking a fist and screaming what are obviously obscenities to notice. I like the idea of a standard "sorry" gesture.

How about holding one hand up with your palm toward your face for just a second? (As in "I'm ashamed of what I just did.") It's simple and lets you keep your other hand on the wheel. -- CAROL IN HOUSTON

DEAR ABBY: Why not use the American Sign Language symbol for "sorry"? Make a fist with your right hand, palm toward the body and place it over the area of your heart and move it in small circles. Of course, the expression on your face pulls it all together. Sign language is used by many people, and the chance that the person you offended may already be familiar with this sign makes it a great way to convey the sentiment. -- SIGN USER IN OLD LYME, CONN.

DEAR ABBY: If I think the other driver will be able to see me, the gesture I make after a mistake is an exaggerated, slow smack to my forehead -- basically, my own Homer Simpson "Doh!" -- IN THE WRONG IN MAINE

DEAR ABBY: "Mild-Mannered Motorist's" letter reminded me of an incident a few years ago. Driving home from work, I was forced to swerve into an oncoming lane by a car driven by a young woman who was pulling onto the road from a parking lot. She didn't see me because of traffic in the lane to my right. Fortunately, there were no oncoming vehicles, and I was able to return to my lane and proceed.

At the traffic signal, I noticed the "offending" car was directly behind me. It continued following me and I started becoming concerned that I had a stalker. Turning into my neighborhood, I quickly drove up my driveway and into my garage. When I got out of the car, the young woman was walking up the driveway. She then began profusely apologizing for having caused a problem for me.

She had driven miles out of her way to offer her apology, which I gratefully accepted. Then we both thanked God for protecting us. I have never seen her again, but I hope she knows I respect her tremendously. -- PLEASANTLY SURPRISED IN NORTH CAROLINA

I personally like the 'smack to the forehead' gesture.. The ASL 'sorry' sign is great, but I doubt most other drivers would see it at all.. or know what it meant.
      • Snow Bunny-Rebel 3 mths ago
I thought of the not seeing it aspect. I'm short and drive a van; you're lucky to see the tops of my shoulders.

Awhile back as I was pulling out of my driveway, I nearly hit this woman walking her dogs. I stopped, motioned and mouthed that I was sorry, but she just looked at me dumbfounded. Now, before this incident, I had always noticed her walking the dogs down our lane, but after this, I never saw her going by our house. One day while coming home I saw her and pulled up beside her and rolled down my window. I told her I was so sorry and that I just never saw her. She said she can't hear very well and never heard me. We laughed about making a terrible pair then because obviously I can't see and she can't hear. No hard feelings.

really, i just want to know what hand sign i should use for the azzhats that drive while texting and think a cute 'sorry, oopsie' gesture will make it ok after nearly killing me. i'd rather they pay my laundry bill after i crap my pants....lol

I drive a tiny car and take it personally when some big load (distracted SUVers, I'm talking to you) almost hits me. They might get a scratch, but I get dead.
      • Drunky Chunk 3 mths ago
I personally am amazed at all the people who drive those expensive tiny Smart Cars. I don't think it's smart at all. They'll never live through a collision (and if they do, they'll wish they were dead). I don't get it.

Convextech: I drive an old Honda Del Sol, which gets great mileage, is great in all weather, can be parked anywhere, can swerve on a dime, and just turned 204,000 miles. I also drive a Ford F350 dually diesel, which gets awful mileage, is good in any weather only because of it's 4 wheel drive option, can't be parked easily and is just scarey to drive on narrow roads. I think I can avoid a collision much easier in my tiny car than in my big truck. Also, because I'm mindful of the fact that the boats on wheels would crush me I never drive distracted and always have an eye out for those who do.

I was told by a friend from England that a long time ago the V was actually an insult.......the archers of days gone by would do that.....those were the fingers used to draw back the bow string and basically a 'I'm going to get you' gesture.........

Funny how one gesture can mean two very different things.........I put my hand to my chest and nod my head, always seems to work.
      • Ula ✠ 3 mths ago
The French used to cut the middle finger off captured English archers, thus was born the middle finger salute from uncaptured English archer towards the French...and now the rest of us from people who clearly aren't English archers. Isn't history fun?
      • it's just me 3 mths ago
I do the same gesture, Ange.
I will have to ask my English historian husband about that one, Ula. I love to learn where things got their origins.
      • Angie 3 mths ago
Let me know It's......I heard it awhile back and hope I remembered correctly :)

I've heard that to Ula from the same guy!

We started talking about it because my son loves archery and was wearing a Tshirt with a skeleton hand on it doing the V.....Our friend thought that's why he was wearing it ;)

I read in a magazine once about a woman who knew she was a bad driver carried a ping-pong paddle that she painted white and wrote "SORRY!" in black letters on it. She kept it on the passenger seat beside her to hold up whenever she made an error. She said the sign turned quite a few angry expressions into chuckles and a wave from the wronged driver.

I think that would anger me more. If she felt the need for such a thing then she should be walking.
      • Drunky Chunk 3 mths ago
^ That's what I thought too. If she had to use it that often, she shouldn't be behind the wheel at all.
      • Lissy 3 mths ago
        I'd third what Cat said...

#1. the peace sign with your palm facing you means something diametrically different in the UK.
      • Speak Softly... 3 mths ago
What does it mean, Ellie Mckellie?
      • is what it is 3 mths ago
it does here too. the peace sign is palms facing out. SS you dont want to know what the other sign means.
      • Bex McGex 3 mths ago
it's the lady-parts equivalent of flipping someone off.
    • roknrolr63  •  Springfield, Illinois  •  3 mths ago
The peace sign means something entirely different (and not so nice) in many other countries and cultures. Because we live in a diverse society, I would stick to the hand to forehead gesture mentioned below.
    • The Prisoner  •  3 mths ago
The one finger peace sign is a required part of driving safely in California.
    • Big Daddy  •  3 mths ago
I want a sign on the top of my car, pre-programmed with a variety of messages like "sorry" "you dimwit" "cool car" and so on. It should rotate so you can aim it it the intended recipient, and print backward for the rear-view mirror of the car ahead of you. Running that wouldn't be a distraction, would it?

If I'm driving and make a mistake, I quick look around to make sure there's not a cop in sight.

Back in The Woodlands, Texas, I pulled onto a feeder road not realizing that an approaching but distant black SUV was going way over the speed limit. The dark haired, highly made-up female driver came flying up behind me after I was on the feeder road, then slammed on her brakes and drove 2 inches from my bumper screaming, honking and gesticulating wildly, even though she could've simply passed since there were three lanes and we were basically the only cars on the road. I waved and smiled. That was a mistake. She passed, got in front of me, then slammed on her brakes. She did this several times. When I tried to pass her, she pulled over into my lane almost running me off the road, then smiled and waved. This craziness went on for several minutes with my daughter in the car crying because she thought we were going to be killed in a car wreck. Moral here is that some drivers are just plain crazy, and it's not a good idea to wave and smile to them.

I think rather than worrying about some universal apologetic hand signal we all realize that sometimes while driving perfectly sane, intelligent, wonderful people, just like ourselves make mistakes and we all just get the heII over it and go about our business. At the most I will look chagrinned and shrug my shoulders and then get back to watching porn on my i-phone.
    • Strangelove  •  3 mths ago
Wow at that last letter. I can't imagine too many people taking the time and effort to follow the driver until the driver stops so the person can get out and actually apologize face to face.
    • sledgehammer  •  San Diego, California  •  3 mths ago
The only sign I've made at another driver was at an intersection where I had right of way and the cross traffic had stop signs. The other driver was convinced I should stop for her and held her hand up in a "wait" type of gesture. I held up 4 fingers and shook my head. It was really funny to watch her eyes search desperately for my non-existant stop sign. She immediately gave the hand up "sorry" gesture. Who knows, if she comes to that intersection again, I might have saved her life.
    • Insa  •  3 mths ago
Yes, take BOTH your hands off the wheel to make a complicated hand gesture or actually smack yourself in the head (!), your eyes off the road to make eye-contact with someone, while you're both driving 55 mph!
    • ARCHER  •  3 mths ago
I've seen more middle fingers than a manicurist.
    • GetYourOwnName  •  3 mths ago
Actually, nothing says "I'm sorry" like a handwritten note.
Imagine looking at treasured keepsakes with your grandchildren: "Oh! Here's the apology I got from the driver who rear-ended me at Walmart trying to get the space I was waiting for!"
    • Ozzie_n_Harriet  •  3 mths ago
The peace sign isn't that universal. If you're in England and hold you hand backwards while doing it, it's the same as our single finger symbol.
    • Ravenne  •  3 mths ago
Remember riding with my friend's dad once and somebody honked at him and flipped him off. He waved back with a big smile and yelled "Hey, how ya doin?" like he misunderstood and thought the guy was greeting him (although what he muttered under his breath indicated that he knew very well what the other driver was trying to convey). I thought that was pretty hilarious - I imagine the other driver was even more PO'd that his angry gesture was "misunderstood".

If I do something stupid while driving and other drivers get offended, I just fake a heart attack and crash into a post. Who feels stupid now?
