MSNBC Contributor: ‘Rick Santorum is a Homophobe and a Bigot’

Alex Wagner SE Cupp Jimmy Williams

MSNBC contributor Jimmy Williams lashed out at Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum on Now with Alex Wagner Tuesday, culminating with the accusation that the former Pennsylvania Senator is “a homophobe and a bigot.”

Wagner began the segment by presenting to the bipartisan opinion panel an excerpt from a December 27 New York Times editorial board piece on Texas Rep. Ron Paul, that said Ron Paul “disqualified himself for the presidency by peddling claptrap proposals“and ”opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.” Williams immediately took the opportunity to shift the conversation to some of his more general and aggressive opinions.

“I find it utterly fascinating, when white people think they know how black people think,” said Williams, who is a senior strategist for United Republic, an anti-Citizens United organization. Williams’ odd observation was in reference to claims of controversial comments on welfare made by Santorum Sunday. When discussing entitlements at an Iowa town hall event, Santorum reportedly said “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families.”

In video of the event it is not clear whether Santorum actually said “black” people, or simply stumbled over his words. ABC News video of the controversial comment at (2:10):

After Williams’ first noteworthy remark, he engaged in a back-and-forth with panelist S.E. Cupp, where his rhetoric only sharpened:

“I find it absolutely fascinating when men think they know how to tell women what to do with their bodies,” Williams added. “What in God’s name are these people thinking?”

“Look, this is taken completely out of context,” Cupp responded.”Rick Santorum talks about social economics all the time.”

“That was the only thing he ever talked about in the Senate, was abortion” interrupted Williams. “When was the last time Rick Santorum ever had an abortion”

“He talks about how two-person families are better economically for the country,” said Cupp. “He talks about how conservative social policies are better for white people and for black people.”

“Hang on, I take great offense to that as a gay man making plenty of money,” interjected Williams once again. “I can’t go raise a kid as well as a mom and a dad can?”

“That’s not what he just said— you’re taking things out of context,” Cupp insisted.

“That’s what he says all the time!” Williams shot back. “Rick Santorum is a homophobe and a bigot. Let’s call it what it is.”

In an interview with Sean Hannity on FOX News Monday night, Santorum could not confirm or deny the “black people” comment because he did not recall it, and hadn’t heard “the context of the question.”

“I haven’t heard it,” said Santorum. “All I can say is that I don’t single out any one group of people. That’s one thing I don’t do. I don’t divide people by group or race or class.

“I condemn all forms of racism,” he added.

Raw Story Video of the heated debate on MSNBC, and host Alex Wagner ending the conversation by presenting “In that comment, he’s singling out black folks in particular,” as if it were fact:

One day I hope that all news channels will start reporting the news again instead of letting people give their opinions as the news. I'm talking about both sides of the political aisle when I say this.

But the truth is the truth every candidate has said something negative. How do they think they can win without the minority vote?

Imagine a caucasian politician saying this:
“I find it utterly fascinating, when black people think they know how white people think..."

That would never be tolerated. Never.
I'm a very vocal civil rights supporter, but it has to play the same both ways.

They say it all the time. But then, when was the last time a white guy was asked to speak for his race. We accept we have differing views in life while most white folks think of black folks in the context of Sanford and Son. And if you can't believe me check the polls that have been taken on that very subject....
      • N 4 mths ago
And most white people are afraid that this country is becoming more diverse. By 2050', white folks will be the minority.
      • . 4 mths ago
N, white people afraid of being the minority so ...what then? lol it's inevitable eh?

Just remember, Rick Santorum didn't retire from the Senate. He was voted out by his own constituents, losing badly by 18 points to his opponent and marking the worst defeat ever for a GOP senator in the state of Pennsylvania, largely because of his religious views.

I just don't see how he can survive past New Hampshire.

Likewise Romney didn't run for reelection in Mass. because his approval was so low he would have been clobbered. In the meantime Gary Johnson a 2 term governer with successful business experience, a state with balanced budgets left office with the highest approval ratings of any governer and he gets shut out of the debates.

I saw this the other day on the daily show (for all you anti-daily show people, that would be a full 2 days before the article broke on here, for the record)....and he DEFINITELY DID say black people, it was clear as day, and how the writer of this article could evin begin to claim that they're "unsure" as to whether or not he really said it or was just stumbling over his words..#$%$..TOTAL #$%$..are you kidding me? That's like saying well I thought bush said Iraq had weapons of bass extraction...if he WAS stumbling over words he was probably getting ready to say darkie or n-word or something and realized he was on tv and not in his living room and that probably wouldn't fly with the public..
    • I. C. Warming  •  4 mths ago
He said "...blalota people...." What did he mean? Did he start to say black and then corrected himself? Inconclusive. We do know he is a bigot who has openly confessed his desire to make being Muslim a crime punishable by profiling at the airport. It seems very unlikely that this is the limit of his willingness to play us and them.

Wayne are you gay? Or is it that you are a troll who can never get laid? People with healthy happy sex lives are just that, healthy and happy. They do not expend the time or energy worrying about who else is doing who. So is your bitterness because even gays can get sex when you can't? Or is it that you are gay yourself and can't accept yourself so you are jealous of the gays that are happy? Which one Wayne? Because if you had a satisfying sex life, you would not be upset about others that also do. My guess is you're a relatively stupid troll.

Did he not recently say at a debate we should profile Muslims?

It really didn't matter what he said what matters is he's right. working for a living gives more freedom, I dont want to live with wondering if my welfare will be cut or stopped I have the pride of bringing home the paycheck I earned. I believe in hard times help is needed just not for life.
