College tuition has gone up but not as much in the past. Some costs for the 2013-14 academic year, compared with the previous year:
In-state degree at a public four-year institution:
— Average tuition and fees: $8,893, up $247, or 2.9 percent.
— Average room and board: $9,498 — up $327, or 3.6 percent.
— Total average charges: $18,391 — up $574, or 3.2 percent.
Out-of-state degree at a four-year institution:
— Average tuition and fees: $22,203 — up $670, or 3.1 percent.
— Average room and board: $9,498 — up $327, or 3.6 percent.
— Total average charges: $31,701 — up $997, or 3.2 percent.
In-state degree at a public two-year institution:
— Average tuition and fees: $3,264 — up $110, or 3. 5 percent.
— Average room and board: $7,466 — up $124, or 1.7 percent.
— Total average charges: $10,730 — up $234, or 2.2 percent.
Private non-profit four-year-institution:
— Average tuition and fees: $30,094 — up $1,105, or 3.8 percent.
— Average room and board: $10,823 — up $365, or 3.5 percent.
— Total average charges: $40,917 — up $1,470, or 3.7 percent
For-profit institution:
— Average tuition and fees: $15,130 — up $70, or 0.5 percent.
